Correct SWB paint details

Hello everyone,

My 67 is ready for paint and while we're not going crazy to make it exactly as it came from the factory, I'd like to get it right where I can. After reading as many threads as I can find I wrote the following summary. I still have questions that I've listed. I know that much or all of this has been covered, but I thought it would be useful to have as much as possible in one place.

I have pictures from many of your posts, but I haven't illustrated any of the details because I can't personally vouch for the originality of the paint and finish. Please add your corrections and additions. We have people who have really studied these questions. You know who you are. Once again thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge.

I'll keep updating the summary with the new information and adding the location of the latest summary to this first post so it's easy to find in the future. I'll list areas of disagreement as well as areas of consensus.

SWB paint

General
Undercoating has a granular texture similar to very coarse sandpaper, especially under the trunk lid.

Body color overspray on the undercoated interior is common.

Set gaps to 5mm in primer, thickness of paint will bring gaps to 3+ mm

SEM satin black is a good match for the factory satin black

Worth schutz works well for undercoating. Practice with gun and a sample of the correct texture.

Exterior
Bottom of car, undercoating over steel.
Wheel wells undercoat over body color
Inside of bumpers body color

2 small vents in front wheel well masked quickly and satin black, or undercoat?
?masked on earlier cars, not on later?
? Inside of fenders?
? Break between body color and undercoating just above top of jack receivers?
?How clean is this break? How should this be masked?

Cabin
Undercoating over steel on floor, up to level of bottom of instruments on front bulkhead
Undercoating ends at a masking line just below bottom of rear windows
Satin black on tunnel around hand brake and shift coupler access plate
Satin black where seat tracks mount
Satin black over body color on interior surface of door where door panels don’t cover the flat surface a of the metal
Door hinges body color

?where exactly does undercoating end below rear windows?
?Does undercoat extend right to the edge of the doorframe where the seal mounts at the rear door opening?
?Undercoat or body color on rear seat pan, firewall, and package tray?
? Does undercoating cover the vent tubes where the flexible part will be mounted?

Trunk
Undercoated
Undercoat up to bottom of instruments on back of dash
Trunk lid body color. Undercoating only on flat surface inside of bracing covered with body color. Bracing is smooth body color
Hinges satin black
? Some have written that undercoating breaks below fender bolts, at a masking line about 30 mm below lip at top of trunk?
? some wrote that undercoating covers fender bolt heads? ?where exactly is the break?
This is my biggest question. It will probably be the most obvious paint detail on a finished car.


Engine bay
Undercoated
Hinges satin black
Bottom of lid body color
Recess for engine lid grill on top of lid satin black to 3mm below flat surface of engine lid

"2 small vents in front wheel well masked quickly and satin black, or undercoat?" On my '65 they were masked and then the undercoating was put on. The tape was taken off with body color under.

"How clean is this break? How should this be masked?" Masked.

That is my car, others may be different.

Any observations on seam sealer?

Thanks Mike. I think I remember that picture. This car is one that didn't have black under the grill, isn't it?

My car had seam sealer but not very much was used from the factory. Too bad bc generally where it was used there was less rust and sometime zero rust. I am seam sealing any and all areas that should be seam sealed with little regards to original bc I do not want to ever have to do this again. Just my .02.

Does anyone have pictures that show the side of the trunk just below the trunk lid? I'd like to see if the schutz went all the way to the top or if there is body color for some distance below the lip.

Alan, do you mean inside the trunk or in the fender well?

When we did '065 we put a bead of seam sealer on and then used a brush to smooth it out, just like the factory did. And you don't have to be too careful with the brush. . . they weren't. Photos are on this site somewhere. . . let me know if you need me to dig them up.

I meant in the trunk. Maybe that's why I'm confused. Does the undercoat stop about 30mm below the top of the inner wall of the fender in the fender well?

I think I have a picture of your car on the rotisserie with seam sealer in place. I agree with a bead of sealer and a brush. That's one place I didn't follow the factory exactly. We put seam sealer on all the seams.

In doing similar research for my '67, I recall seeing a handful of posts indicating the body recess for the front/rear turn signal housings were also painted satin black. I cannot recall if the horn grill recess area remained body color or were satin black. In addition, one poster also indicated the gas filler cavity was similar satin black.

Others can hopefully confirm accuracy; just passing on potential added details that I came across.
