I have burned out two coils in two months:(. One was used and the other new. In both instances, I was driving and the car went dead. Luckily, this time I had anew coil in the trunk, so I swapped it out and made it home:o.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Is it the voltage regulator, or,,,,,,,.

Just check your charging voltage at the battery, it may even be necessary to drive around for a bit with long leads on the voltmeter so you keep the meter in the car with you so that if it occasionally overcharges you'll catch it in the act. For a problem of this sort I'd really consider either overcharging or poor grounds, at least as a starting point.

When I bought the car 11 years ago, the CDI box burned out about six months after I got the car. I sent it to a company in CA and it was re-built. They put a piece of tape on the invoice and it said it burned out due to overcharging. I should have dealt with this then, but did not.

Thanks for jumping in! I agree with the silver coils,,,, and I did sand mine down and paint it black, so it looks oem. I think my issue is the voltage regulator though. There are too many signs pointing to that,,,, my tach jumps at times, I blew a CDI box many years back and the original coil that burned out was the older style we prefer. The second burned out unit was that silver unit!
I am not good with electrical tests, so I think I may have to get the car to the shop. I hope I can find another oem Bosch regulator as the new ones are ugly and look
anything but oem.
