The ad for the car says, "One of only four cars painted in Cadillac Grey Beige metallic, this 911′s paint still shows like new." The car has only 23,000 miles on it, and is said to be all original. The description is innacurate - Cadillac? - but it seems to be a 1973 color. I guess. Based on the Red Book, I could only assume it's color code 622 - beige gray. Red Book doesn't mention a color code 514 for 1988. If it's true that only 4 cars were ever painted #622, then the car in the pic is probabaly the only example still in existence.
Carl, now I see that the pic you attached of the color code in the door jam came from the car in question, and it says 514. But I can't find that code listed anywhere. Not in the Red Book, anyway. It's a mystery.
Chuck is correct, this is a paint to sample color. I was told by Tom Smock who owned the car when it won the overall Manhattan award at the 1977 San Diego parade that is was a 1964 Cadillac color. Incidently this was the first 911 to ever win the Manhattan award. I have seen this car many times and it is just stunning in person, fabulous color. It was originally ordered by a customer at Vasek Polak but the customer Failed to pick up the car. It was originally purchased by Robert Wood who many of you know started Wheel Enhancement. A very unique car.
Charlie,
Red Book is great for some things and terrible for others... paint codes in the 911 era being one of them. I don't have 514 anywhere else either but the number in in the appropriate place on the color scale and is definitely original to the car.
Here's the link to when Road Scholars had it: http://road-scholars.com/1973-porsche-911t/
Morgan's 'Original Porsche 911' is pretty good for color codes. I also have a Glasurit shop book from the day that comes in handy from time to time.
Thought I'd add this period factory shot of a 904 in 6403 Enamel Blue. Probably a 6407 Signal Red behind it and a 6206 Silver Metallic behind that one.
