This 1971 Porsche 911S Targa is a well documented 51k mile example originally from the East Coast. The car was stored by its original owner from 1986 until 2004 and has been part of a private collection in California since then. The matching numbers 2.2L flat-six made 180 horsepower when new and is paired to a 5-speed manual transmission. This 911S was treated to a high quality repaint in its original silver in 2005, and the extensive service records show that it has been well cared for from new. The car has not been restored and remains largely unmodified, and the optional factory-installed air conditioning blows cold. It is sold on behalf of the current owner with an extensive maintenance file, Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, and a clean California title.
The original owner took European delivery of this car and apparently drove it enough to warrant getting an oil change while still in Germany. The current owner has added about 2,000 miles to the odometer during 12 years of ownership. The repaint from 2005 is said to show very well with no apparent flaws. The targa top has been recovered and rebuilt, and the stainless steel targa bar has an unmarred finish. Some minor imperfections are noted in the chrome headlight bezels, but the brightwork is reported to be in very good condition otherwise. The records show some minor body damage was incurred in 1971, at which time a reflector, the license plate panel, and hood seal were replaced.
The dash is free of warping or splits and retains its original working radio. The rare factory-installed air conditioning has been converted to r134 refrigerant and blows cold, while all of the instruments are reported to work correctly. The dash controls have intact markings, and the vinyl-wrapped surfaces are nicely fitted even at the corners and edges. The upholstery was re-dyed in 2005 when the car was repainted. Some creasing is evident in the seat bottoms, but the material is intact and both the leather and foam remain soft. The seller states that the sport seats seen in this example were standard for a 1971 911S. The 51k indicated miles are confirmed as accurate by the extensive records. The current owner purchased the car in 2004 with 49,500 miles. The trunk is upholstered with original materials and the factory tool kit is complete down to the Porsche-branded towel. The original red and black keys have been retained.
The 2.2L flat-six is unmodified and underhood fittings have intact finishes and coatings. All of the correct stickers are present, including the six on the latch crossmember along with those on the cooling fan and other hardware. Recent services included repairing a small oil leak, installing new shifter and sway bar bushings, and a valve adjustment. The A/C system has been recharged with r134a, though the fittings were not converted from r12 style in order to preserve a period look. The cold start valve is currently disconnected for safety reasons, though the car is said to start easily. The exhaust shows some chipping on its outer surfaces consistent with normal use, but the system is complete with the original-type muffler and heat exchangers still fitted. The underside of the engine and transaxle cases are clean and dry. Engine #6310383 is original as confirmed by the attached Porsche CoA. The rockers and pinch welds are straight and free of corrosion, as are the floors. The correct red A/C lines can be seen.
Extensive documentation, such as this invoice for clutch and exhaust work in 1979, is provided from both the original and current owner. Invoices for the recent mechanical service and the repaint. Copies of the original importation documents for the car following European delivery can be seen. All of equipment appears to be correct as listed on the CoA. This 911S Targa appears very original apart from the repaint, and its condition and working factory A/C should make it a very usable longhood.
