Not clear why what appears to be the second placed 911S of Waldegård from the previous years RAC international GB rally was featured on official programme cover in 72 rather than the overall winner of that prior year event the SAAB 96 after all it beat the Porsche by over 3 mins?Quote:

By then he was probably in his late eighties but he got a lot of enjoyment and the years fell away dimly recalling our chats of yesteryear and of me watching him do repairs for his own and neighbours cars in the home garages of our street as favours to friends.

that Porsche is participating in the "inter-continental internationale" of 1972. It is a 911 with ST bits and sunroof or so I get to observe(In detail I also think I can see the front oil lines...).
Something did not add up to me in the file or in the tour with the event but investigating I saw that there was an intercontinental Hotel in the city of Limerick. Is this image part of that Hotel? That rally, in 1972 passed through "dublin"... I must understand that this would be part of the route but why would it be dated in month 6?

This other image is the same license plate. And I would like to ask. It's the same car as I thought with S/T bits.
we can see two small holes in the front bumper (in the image of the intercontinental, located later in time) we see those holes and the "widened" bumper. We can see under the front glass two points of something that I do not identify

I do not identify but it is "illuminating" when it comes to relating these vehicles, therefore I want to ask. Are they the same vehicle? In montecarlo did you use a sunroof or not?
What are those black dots? Water shooters?
Who is the lady accompanying the pilot and who is the pilot? They don't look much alike to me but I've always been very bad at looking for similarities.
I would also like to ask if someone just by looking at the photo can tell me if the montecarlo vehicle was a 72 or not.

I think it is a 72 the entry forms have it as a 911S with a 2341 engine size - ie standard 1972 and 1973 S engine. It was a group 4 car so had some modifications to put it in that class but is not an ST. It started from Oslo with Manfred Gudladt as pilot and Manfred Gronau as co-pilot.

The things below the windscreen I think are double windscreen washers on each side instead of single - a good modification for a rally car in such an event. They have removed the trim on the front bumper and replaced it with tape and appear to have done the same on the sills. The front spoiler looks to be a 72 MY one but modified to fill in the gap in the centre bottom that is in stock ones. Modifications - yes, and extra lights etc but you would expect that on a Monte Carlo rally car. It is not an ST though. The front and rear fenders look to have been widened a bit in your photo but it is hard to tell if wider ones have been added (possibly) or the exiting ones stretched out . the front ones actually look stock to me in my photo and even in yours the rears do not look widened too much if at all.
i am not sure what you mean by it being the same car as in the intercontinental photo. That is too blurry for me to tell but there are significant differences between the two including the front spoiler as the one at the hotel is a standard one

the two black "holes", actually plastic plugs, in the front spoiler below the bumper are where bumper horns / bumperettes would be attached if they were fitted. They were on all cars with that steel S spoiler.

I got a partial copy of that image! I can tell it's a 72 (because of its side oil cap) and also say it received S/T parts (I think...original) the only thing I couldn't figure out was why the black lines and no trim and why it had the black headlights instead of chrome. Do you know vin or date of manufacture of this vehicle? In the image of the intercontinental the vehicle has black headlights so... there was an accident or modification since I understand that in 1972 the headlight moldings were chrome. The roof support has been removed and a sunroof is clearly visible. Useful in Monte Carlo? Hence the question of whether it was the same vehicle since I have not obtained another image of it in which the sunroof can be seen. It also received a new front spoiler (type ST) or at least the modification. It has the same holes for the speakers so I understand it would be a steel S/T type bumper, is it the same modified one or a new one? Finally... when I know if I can share the image I will be happy to publish it here! Salds!Quote:

I have to say, looking at the photos, it is very curious how is the effect that hides "the sunroof" ... there you have to put several eyes to look at it but I think I can see it in two of the images you show!

the black around the headlights is tape to hold them in place on rough roads - the design makes that a weak point, especially if the front gets a slight hit. That was and still is a common modification rather than fixing them in place more securely with a metal strap welded to the headlight rim and screwed to the top of the mudguard/ fender which is for serious rally cars

From the date of the image I know that it is badly dated. The intercontinental rally ended in month 5 or so the commemorative plaque says...
