Richard, what is your source for these #'s? The 961796 & 8416 are not a good fit with the database:
901/02 961687 8316
901/02 961737 8395
901/02 961796 8416
901/02 961947 8733
901/02 961942 8744
I would believe 8476; the increase in build # is less than the increase in serial # when it should be greater. Can you check to see if the 1 in 8416 is actually a 7 please.
Hi Dave
When I wrote numbers I already had a feeling that the numbers didn't look correct. Like they were restamped.
I have no idea whether this restamping took place during the restoration at the factory or that it was brought to the restoration like that.
What I do know is that my friend has a 68S that was restored at the factory in the 90's and that one has a restamped serial number as well.
Now the question is, when the factory restamps a case .. is it than original stamping ..
BTW if there are fellow board members attending Essen this weekend, they can check the numbers too.
Richard
My feeling on restamping is that it should be disclosed.
Second, the casting dates and pairing numbers should be checked for consistancy. This thread is a valuable resource when it comes to ensuring that an engine is numbers matching. Now there is no way to prove that an engine has matching numbers, however if it is not consistent then flags should be raised. The more data that we can collect here, the better this resource will be.
It could be that if the case was restamped, then the person doing so may have mistakened the numbers.
Dave,
I think the Build Number Database always should be taken with a grain of salt.
No matter how hard we try, there are re-stampings, mis-stampings and (most common) mis-reading and incorrect transcribing of numbers.
The good news is that the ‘pattern’ of numbers will spot errors. Keeping the source associated with the number can allow re-researching a number and confirming the accuracy.
Can you retain (but not post) the VIN found with each engine where possible? Not very definitive due to all the engine swaps over the years but the Factory ‘normal flow’ of engines to chassis might become apparent.
Here is
Engine number 900141
Build number 41
VIN 300040

I’ll get case pair numbers and casting date.
It also has original transmission.
Numbers coming.
Best,
Grady
Yes indeed, there probably are errors in some of the numbers; by placing the data here people can help me police the data. I have not included some data where the numbers are questionable. I also have extra data regarding the souce of the data in some cases, and the original VIN or the car it came from when known. The casting date(s) and case pairing numbers have been a late addition to the list as well as the case casting part number(s).
I think that as the database grows it gets much better.
Looks like it changed hands to Henk who now has it on eBay
