Yes they are expensive, but it is also very expensive to build a high performance 356 engine from scratch. And the problem with a 356 engine that is making huge Hp is that they make power at a high rev range and are not well suited for street use. I had a 356 race car and its engine life is measured in hours, seriously it had a hour meter.
I think if you did the math, the robustness of a Polo would make it economical, or at least a wash in the long run. I do think that they are best suited for a 356 though. People have fitted 911 engines with extensive and "expensive" body mods, so the money saved there could be used on the Polo. A Polo in a 912 or a 914 is cool but, a financially poor decision (never made any of those ;) ). It would be much cheaper to use a 911 engine in those applications.
The other thing to consider is the "Wow" factor. Many of us spend silly money on our cars simply to give us something to BS about in the parking lot. The Polo engine certainly meets that criteria.
this gentleman put one in his 912

That's Chris's... glad he's sorted and has put some miles on it, a shame he couldn't bring it to RRIV. Here's his thread:

Love the notion of putting one in a 912 or 914. I'll take photos of the POLO 4 Dean built for my 356 (the more typical install)
and post them in a few days.
It all sounded like fun until the $30,000 comment....yikes. I'm not a member of that club...
Old thread but I put a lot of miles in front of a polo engine in an Emory 356.
Great combination and beautiful looking. Highly recommend.
The 912 makes me smile every time I drive it. After I drive it the price of the engine seems dirt cheap compared to the pleasure that comes from the experience. I am smitten by this compact power plant.

9000 miles and no issues.

Dean always told me he did not have reliability problems. Reliability and lots of power is so nice.
27,000 miles. No issues.
And Milt Minter with POLO #1 in Desperado.
