Coupe is worth more than a targa? Eeeennnnnttttt not any longer, people buy what they like. Lots of people request targas these days. Just depends on what you like. Targas originally cost more than coupes.
Coupes values have exceeded Targa values by 11.9% over the last 12 months and by 12.1% over the last 24 months according to my data.

I don't really think you can treat the cars like commodities, or pricing as science, since no two will be in the same condition or even colour combo and buyers only get to buy what's for sale while they are looking. We can't, in all honesty, be exact about what the price difference is between Coupe sand Targas. But it is generally accepted that the market has priced Coupes over Targas in recent history.

Red Book says they made 7846 Longhood S Coupes and 4045 Longhood S Targas.
Been having this conversation elsewhere, but even had they survived in equal proportion, Coupes need a much bigger buyer base than Targas to justify the premium. And I will bet that rates of attrition have been far higher in Targas over the last 40 years than in Coupes.
Meaning it's very hard, on fundamentals, to justify a big spread between the two. So I am a buyer of S Targas at a discount all day long. Better ownership proposition all round, for my money. Ivory or black, if anyone has one. They aren't easy to find.

This car looks absolutely stunning, right up my street! But messing with the engine to that degree, that would be the deal breaker for me.
Frank - the bid was within hailing distance of 300 but a little shy of that. About three years ago, I drove the car and discussed repurchasing it, but in the final analysis, didn't move forward. The engine change was a major negative in my book, but then I've always been a 2.341 kinda guy.
I don't think this has anything to do with coupe vs targa. Its all about originality, 70% original paint and general clean nature of a nice old S. Plus, big plus, SLOAN, SLOAN SLOAN. If this was a coupe I bet they would have it priced significantly higher. People will buy what they like but the facts are the facts and coupes still are at the top. And remember Sloan's premiums are no indication of anything. What would you rather have a coupe or a targa? Come on now be honest. I know of some who would trade their targa for a coupe in a heartbeat but none the other way. Kind of like E vs S.
Also rarity means little here. Speedsters 4500 or so, Conv. D 1300 or so, speedsters rule. Plus original cost and product placement in the line up was, obviously, no indicator of present day desirability. Once again, the speedster was the lowball entry and the rotund cabriolet perfect for trips back and forth to the club.
That said I like targas and would have one as a second or addtional car. I had one, a swt. Have you seen pu911rsr, Phil's S targa? Beautiful car.
