Thanks David!
Here is the Lotus...but three weeks ago I took the 912 for a Isola d'Elba road trip (completely timeless island off the shore of Tuscany).
Hi Milou, I hear exactly what you are saying and am just very happy to have what I have. The market has certainly put a lot of these Porsche's out of the reach of mere mortals and the effort required to find a good / great example is / has become exhausting.
As an owner I/ we can sometimes become terribly tunnel visioned in regards to the respect to other marques and lets not forget that it is due to the 'others' that the 911 is what it is,,, (refined madness).
I think its very healthy to have a variety in the garage and a 500kg Lotus is a fantastic addition to any ones garage,, they dont take up much space haha.
Kind regards
Mark

Thanks for posting the photo Milou. As I suspected, a stunning example. Enjoy this new car.
Milou what a lovely car and an interesting thread. The prices for our long hoods are truly nuts. But I do not see it changing anytime soon. But who knows.
I own a beautiful 73 2.4S. I paid current market value last year. Quite a chunk of change. If I had bought at yester years prices I would have taken the recaro sports seats out and thrown them in the bin and done the same with the stupidly large diameter steering wheel. But as a long term investment I can't. I am 6'2" slim build. I find the seats uncomfortable. The steering wheel gets in the way of my knees. My other half gets car sick unless I am pushing on. Much prefers my early, quite leggy 85 3.2. The reality is that you sit on the car and not in the car like a 3.2 Carrera. Personally I think a late 3.2 Carrera is the pick of the bunch. The last of the true analogue 911. I will probably sell the S and buy a late 3.2. If god forbid I had an accident. Given the choice between Loads of trouble usually serious I would rather be in a 911.
I think it depends upon what you mean by collecting. If collecting means bringing home a different early 911 a few times a year it should still be enjoyable albeit for fewer (and richer) people.
I've owned my 356A for 13 years, my 911 for 20, and my VW for roughly 30. I'm happy even if I never get another. It's not like I have a place for another anyway.
Thank you for your input. It seems that in the United States you do not have recurrent issues with abusive mechanics, dealers, and independent specialists, like some of us do here in Europe. It's rather good news for the hobby!
Europe doesn't have exclusive rights to "abusive mechanics". ;)
For me? . . . yes
. . . although I don't consider myself a 'collector,' per se
I was looking for something very specific when I purchased the car --- basically an old, un-restored 911 w/ some of the bits + features that IMO made the cars 'special' . . . something that I could just putt-around in. Finances were a consideration --- but only at the point-of-purchase
To say that I was fortunate to've found such a car is a truly cosmic under-statement . . . and I've never forgotten that. Car that I 'collected' has turned-out to be an amazing accident . . .

As for maintaining an Early 911, my experience, again, has been fortunate. I searched for/found the Mechanic --- Tony Gerace . . . before I found the car. Tony has since passed-away . . .
http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...man-has-Passed
. . . but his son Marco 's still there, still running the shop . . . and he's young . . . and I've told him that the car is 'his' for as long as he'll put up with us
As for 'values' --- for me? . . . they're a side-show . . . more of a distraction
911s --- even 'old' ones . . . are not un-common here, where I live, in SoCal . . . re: Luftgekühlt

For most people --- even so-called 'Car People' . . . an Olde 911 is just another possession to assign some dollar-value to . . . and their 'passion' is proportionate to that number
What makes these cars special --- to me + (I think) many of us who come to this site . . . is invisible . . .
. . . the histories and the personalities, the adventures . . . along w/ the leaks + smells + costs
I just consider myself very fortunate
..........
Milou. I hear where you are coming from! I have only poor experiences with Porsche mechanics (two). Both of them having stellar recomendations. I paid my money and got shafted both times. Each occasion
left me with a car that was unreliable. Both were total rebuilds same motor, not minor repairs. A lot of $. So, made my hobby less enjoyable. Trouble is , they were not willing to stand behind their work. By the way, I dig the Lotus .....cliff
