I suspect there can be a significant difference between cars ‘built-to-order’ vs. cars ordered for ‘dealer stock’.
Somebody (Porsche, VoA, P+A) made a seriously poor ordering decision (coupled with a recession and $-to-DM revaluation) in late ’70 as there was an excess of 911 in the Long Beach, CA port. So much so that hundreds of 911s were put through a modified car wash to coat them with preservative Tectyl mixed with unusable jet fuel. They were then later ‘cleaned’ with pure unusable jet fuel.
I recall seeing 911s in Denver with the mixture still oozing from under the rear quarter window trim. I suspect those cars are still rust-free.
It would be interesting to compare current production-to-delivery dates to those of our ‘old’ cars. I’ll bet the time delay is much shorter. Porsche learned that the inventory cost was significant.
With air transport, I suspect one can have a ‘special order’ 911 within the week of completion.
Best,
Grady
