Tragic story, I saw it live on TV that day as a teenager. I'm surprised he was only 35, lookes a lot older in the photos.
Jo Siffert and Denny Hulme in turn 9 at the 1971 Laguna Seca Can-Am. Siffert would finish 5th. One week later, he would be dead. Siffert established the 917-10 as force to be reckoned with while Porsche and Penske were working on the 917-10 Turbo that would rip the championship away from McLaren one year later... As it turns out, Mr Siffert used a personal plate on his cars . . . 'FR 10032'
I believe that the 'S' plates on these cars signify that they may belong to the Faktory --- or, at least came from Stuttgart. Porsche did supply fleet of cars to be used by the movie company --- in the filming as well as by some of the senior staff
Love to see more of your 'contact sheets,' too

'. . . In October 1967, Jo Siffert and his Swiss teammates had travelled to Monza to break some high-speed world distance records established by Ford and Toyota. Unfortunately, their Porsche 906’s suspension soon proved unable to survive long distances on the bumpy Italian circuit. To save the day, a Porsche 911 R was immediately despatched from Germany to take the place of the 906. That 911 R provided the Swiss team with five new long-distance world records – including the 20,000km at an average speed of 209km/h. Only later did the team discover that the engine of the record car was not a freshly refurbished unit, as they had thought, but one which had already spent 100 hours in a flat-out test round the factory’s test track at Weissach . . .'

Really great stuff.. Thank you.
He was in this Yardley/BRM when I saw him at Watkins Glen in 1970. I'm not sure where this picture was taken.
Jim, I think you'll find that you saw Siffert in the Yardley at the Glen in March of '71 ... And I believe that pic was taken at the same race....Quote:

Peter,
That's a very curious photo.... Do you know where and when?
With that 'new' front end configuration I'm think'n he was testing in 1970 at Daytona... or ... CA's 'brand new' Ontario Motor Speedway...
cm
Just a random photo at this point, unfortunately...
Interesting information?
http://gpma.org/se917.html
If correct, this could be 917-028.
After a little book work 928s post and link is correct...
The old rounded body work on the PA needed more down force so Richie Ginther and his crew at Competition Motors and the Vesek crew did the front end work on 028 and tested it at Riverside.
The last CanAm of '69 was scheduled for Las Vegas (Stardust GP 'parking lot' track) but it was damaged by rain... So, the Nov. CanAM was rescheduled for the new Texas Motor Speedway tri-ovel ... McLaren was clocked at 210 !!!!... Siffert and 028 came in 4th....

- Some info and Texas photo out of the wonderful Pete Lyons' book CAN-AM

Does anyone have any other colour pics similar to the #248 Jeff posted ?
It was taken at the press intro of Porsche's race programme for 1970 and was at Hockenheim in December 1969
There seem to be some in black/white on the webs but not anything in colour
Porsche had about 8 different cars there that day
Anyone ?
cheers

Whoa Peter... I've never seen that photo
It was at the second to the last '71 CanAm on Oct. 17th ...
Siffert qualified 7th and finished 5th in the STP 917...
He died on the 24th...

I believe the photo of post 263 was taken at the 1968 French Grand Prix at Rouen les Essarts, and by the way not far away from the location where Jo Schlesser crashed and was killed in the magnesium chassis of his Honda that went on fire.

On lap 14, after Graham Hill retired from the race, Hill gave his helmet visor to Jo Siffert on-track due to Siffert's helmet did not have a visor.
You may see Jo Siffert driving his Lotus-Ford at 1mn 40 s or so in this video :

Next week the Dutch F 1 Grand Prix will be held at Zandvoort
In today’s local paper there is an article with pictures from 1965.
In those days the race track didn’t have boxes for the crews so the F 1 cars took the public roads to local repair shops.
Credits to the photographer. The pictures with the article are from Arie Koper, a then 12 year old kid who was supposed to run an errand for his teacher but made other plans when he got a chance.

Eric, not sure about Stewart and the other...
Stewart and the team usually had all things with the L&M tobacco logo on them... Could be though
As to when the photo was shot... It has to be '71, there was no STP 917-10 before, and unfortunately there was no Siffert after that Oct.
As to where the photo was shot...
Siffert and the 917 only competed in 6 out of the 10 CanAm's in '71 (and still came in 4th in the points)
Armed with my friend Pete Lyons definitive reference CAN-AM, he supplied us with one photo with the same racer's tape pattern as we see in your photo.......... Road America, Elkhart Lake Wis. 8/29/71, he came in 2nd to Revson in the M8F.... I'm assuming that even a shoestring team as theirs was, they probably repaired the fender before the next race at Donnybrooke...
BTW - By coincidence I was at that Elkhart race on the way back from a cross country trip .... ;)

What a great connection you have to the photo of Siffert, Wyss, and Schibler.
There is a Hugo Schibler in Panama City, Panama according to Facebook. I’m not sure if it is the same person, but it is possible.
