Fitting that the end of 2014 brought about the removal of the mild steel heat exchangers. Some pinholes developed which created some popping and the general appearance was going down hill.
Had to cut off all that pre-heat trap stuff for the 72-73 cars on the left exchanger. Just didn't seem right to leave it there.

Glad we did as the SSIs look great. Haven't driven it enough yet to see if they sound or "feel" any different.

The SSIs are the Dansk versions, purchased recently. I was trying to hold out for a set of the original SSIs but they weren't coming up for sale anywhere. We compared prices and bought a few sets at once which may have saved a bit, don't remember specifics.
Regarding fit and finish. They are very impressive materials and build quality wise. All the welds looked great. On my car (MFI, 2.0), the fit was perfect. Absolutely no issues anywhere, clearance or alignment wise.
I am aware of a couple sets that went on 2.4 cars that had fit issues. One for a CIS car and the other for an MFI. The right side unit came into contact with the oil cooler and the left side unit had issues with the crossover line if I recall.
It's hard to imagine the dimensions of the engine changing from 2.0 to 2.4 to effect this, so we are sort of chalking it up to some discrepancies in the manufacturing process. Maybe someone will chime in with authority on why this was the case.
Re: weather. It's been a wet an dreary winter so far but the bigger factor for me is having the time. Life is getting busier with the family growing up...

Just replaced the fuel level sender gasket due to strong odor at last fill up pointing to some dampness at the top of the tank.
Winter service to include oil and filter and rebuild of a couple of the oil lines from the tank with the proper Cohline hose.
Threatening to have car professionally polished to clean up the paint. It's the old school single stage Glasurit and I'm frankly not up to the task.
Car runs great, starts with the first turn of the key all the time. Excellent leakdown, consistent compression.
Everything works. One of my main priorities in ownership is to keep all systems and doodads operational, and this car has a lot of "stuff" on it (auxiliary lights, rear wiper etc etc).

First time seeing this thread and immediately noticed what looks like a lamp attached underneath the engine cover. I quickly scanned the thread and did not see any mention of the engine compartment lamp. I'm asking because I had never seen one before and my COA states my 1972 S came with one.

Thanks, now I know what the engine compartment lamp looks like. The unit attached underneath the engine cover must be the rear window wiper assembly.
