This car was originally delivered in Grosse Pointe, MI and Ivory was the factory color. A subsequent owner painted it dark grey and turned it into a full track car; it has a RennSportReunionI sticker on the lexan windshield. I purchased it in 2005 to use for DE and Club Racing as I felt a momentum car would be better for my driving as I was driving a 964 Turbo and later a '04 GT3 which was wildly fast but really allowed me to make mistakes and make up for it with the power and technology. That car rolled at Lime Rock courtesy of a dear friend and is now long gone. The photos make one cry! Simultaneously, I was transferred to Tokyo and work there for now; I keep the E in the USA. I managed to get it licensed and am slowly monkeying around with new color (hence the Gulf Orange) and making it more street comfortable (the Spaco race seats have to go; by the way what is the proper seat for an ST inspired car? ). The car weighs 2250 and was dyno'd at 200hp so once it gets on the cam in 3rd it goes nicely; it tops out at 125mph or there abouts; has upgraded brakes, fuel cell, welded cage etc. It needs some more detail clean up here and there but runs well and I drive it hard and don't really care about it being in pristine condition as it is a street Rat/Rod. My feeling is that if you can't take a car to the edge of a cliff, push it off and walk away without real regrets you can't drive it past 7/10ths.
The question about Japan is somewhat mysterious regarding cars. Most things in Japan are not what they seem and this is no different. I have looked at many 356 and early 911's and have not closed for three major reasons: 1. Unless you are truly fluent, you are not going to understand the history and really get the nuance of the discussion; 2. Prices are generally high and negotiation is not something the locals are very comfortable with - I have seen cars offered at high prices for many many months and the response is always, "the price is the price" and 3. Japan is a very very damp and humid country; especially the Tokyo area which is where the vast majority of collector cars reside. Rust can be a terrible problem with the early shells and unless you know the car has been stored properly it seems to me that you are buying trouble. If the car is right, it is going to be top dollar and then you have to ship it to USA or Europe so the numbers don't work. You might be able to find the service history for an early 911 if you are comfortable sending me the VIN. The dealers keep very good records and if it was serviced at Porsche they may still have the history. It would be pretty helpful to know where the car was purchased from but again, there are not too many Porsche dealers outside of the Tokyo area (which is quite large).
So in a nutshell, the easy thing in Japan to do is go local; I have a GTR there and honestly it is an amazing car. I probably would not want one back home but it runs with no problem in city traffic and on the mountain pay roads like the 'Toyo Tire Turnpike' there are very few who can keep up (including 911's and 360/430 Ferrari). But, the locals have amazing cars and Porsche, Ferrari, Maserati, and Lambo are daily sights in Tokyo; I have never seen so many exotics driven regularly anywhere in the world. There is tremendous wealth there and the Japanese Mille Miglia turns out some Italian cars that I had only seen in books. Anyway, when the project E coupe is finished, I'll send along some more pix.
I have attache a GTR pix only for the hidden joke which this group will appreciate.
Hi Frank!
Nice detail on that car ;)
I agree 100% with your comments. Will send you a PM. No problem to give you VIN or whatever needed to find some leads. I´m very happy with my japanese car, but it has given me some headace. Just came home now from two hours in the garage :)
Excited with car back from bodyshop so have posted a few pics as it arrived on the drive. As discussed here some time back this is a 356 paint colour , code 5707 , aquamarine.
I have to also mention that I have just had first drive with the elephant & tarrett suspension pieces fitted and its incredible how it feels.
Paul
I love that color.
Flo, Jack's cousin, is back from painting and on the road again. We just took a quick run up Hwy 49 & 140 to celebrate. She still needs a bit of detailing, but it was nice to blow the cobwebs out after 10 months off the highway.
Not a barn find, but a garage find. Stored the last 15+ years with great paint and rock hard window rubber. Original motor that needed clean up and......
I'm keeping all the original stuff but with great help from members of the Early S site, I've added seats, engine tin etc.
Here is my 1977 911S witha 6 stack of webers on a 2.2 totally rebuilt and 5spd sunroof delete factory AC car with a newer Speed Yellow Paint.
