72 RS Prototype Hot Rod Build!

I started with an unstamped 3.0L case, GT3 crank and GT3 oil pump, custom sized Carillo rods that mate up to the custom Mahle pistons and cylinders. Jeff Gamroth has Mahle make him custom 98mm pistons where Jeff has them move the wrist pin location for a better stroke and that changes the wrist pin size to 21mm. It's all Jeff's custom design for a 3.5L. I did not do the MFI/EFI look injection this time. It's all EFI with Rothsport bolt to head throttles and then the stacks up to the SCRS style air cover. Bosch Motec. The heads are Ported big time and twin plugged of course. You must port for power! I went with the new larger SSI's for the look and awesome heat they provide. Could have got even more power with a 1 3/4 free flow system but I'm happy with the amount of power and torque with the SSI's and the SSI dual out muffler.

I'm happy to say I was lucky enough to drive this a little over a week ago -- it is just so good. It was cold (45F, heat works great), the car has narrow tires given the power (funtastic), and it isn't my car. But I still mashed the go pedal.

First thing is just how remarkable the motor is -- smooth, quick to rev, wall of power -- it just wants to go go go. Stomping on the gas and you can just feel the car scrambling for grip, squirming, and then propelling the car, and those in it, forward with urgency. I (mostly) kept it 7k or so, but I'm sure this could rev to 8k+ and still be smooth as silk. The power/weight is ~991 GT3 territory.

Not that it wouldn't scoot down the road fine with a built 915, but just in case this car has short gears. You're just always, always, always, always in the power. All this is matched with equally amazing brakes. Scott can comment what is on the car (I think I know, but don't want to suggest the wrong thing) -- the master cylinder + brake piston size is great. "They almost feel boosted."

While the suspension is the "usual" formula, the combination of the most quiet doorseals and near zero wind noise, the perfect balance of exhaust volume but still being able to converse ... the car is an absolute triumph. I want to compare it to my 991.2 GT3 MT6 and my 72 911S, but it is neither of these cars. It's almost as if these two cars were smashed together. This really has aspects of each car, and yet the result is a shockingly well balanced car that is awesome at any speed and unique to itself.

So, I had a moment of weakness and let Brian drive my car! Actually, the day after I drove it home from Rothsport I broke my collarbone on my dirt bike in Bend Oregon riding the awesome single track trails we have here. So, I finally got to drive my car today after nearly 2 months since I got it home. I had surgery on Halloween. 8 screws and the longest plate the doctor ever installed! It's cold here but dry so I hit the back roads. The heat sure helped. The P7's are really good even on a cold day. This car is my keeper. Many more drives to come.

Oh man Scott. Sorry to hear about you collarbone. You do have some great trails over there as I’ve been lucky enough to ride them myself. Hoping you get a few dry days this winter to go for a few rips and enjoy that beautiful 911.
