HI,
A new car to add to your serial number database, followed by a question-
The car-
1968 911S Targa Soft Window
VIN 11850159
Engine 6391301
Type 901/10
My question is related to the build #. In a previous comment you mentioned that you believed that only 901/xx prototypes and 914/6 engines did not have build numbers. There is no build number next to the 901/10 type stamp on my engine. Does that mean that my engine could be a prototype? Is there any other data I can gather from the car that would support the prototype theory or lack of a build number.
Your posts and research have been extremely helpful to my discovery of the history of my car. Thanks.
Bruce

You got caught by the old double-post, just be patient cause sometimes this forum can be a little slow to respond. Anyway, you could edit your second post by adding in a photo of the area where the build # should go. Really, for your serial # it should have a build #. There were a few at the very end that apparently did not get them, but there are several after yours that did. So, either they goofed, or perhaps you got a replacement case with some of the numbers restamped. What about the other numbers on the case: pairing numbers on both halves, and the date code under the pulley. BTW, the serial is for a 1969 engine; is it MFI or carbs?
1968 911S Targa Soft Window
VIN 11850159
Engine 6391301
Type 901/10
6391301 is indeed a 1969 911S engine and 901/10 is the correct type. These numbers are in agreement. The range of these engine numbers is 6390001 to 6392126.
This engine was original MFI. What induction is on it?
11850159 is the VIN for a 1968 911S Targa, The range for this VIN is 11850001 to 11850442. The VIN will not indicate soft or hard window.
Best,
Grady
Thanks for your replies, Dave and Grady. So I have a 1968S car with a 1969S engine. It has Weber carbs now but the manifold where the carbs attach seem to have the injector stubs. As I mentioned I cannot find any build number around the type stamp on the engine. Is there any chance that the car would have left the factory with this engine and carb set up (ie prototype) or is it more likely that someone just put a 1969S engine in the car and converted the MFI to Webers?
I have some additional numbers which may be relevant or helpful to your database.
1. The numbers stamped by the valve covers under the engine are-901.105.111.0R (same on both sides);
2. The numbers stamped by the trans axel cover (at least that what it looks like to me) are - 901.101.102.3R on the passenger side and 901.101.101 3R on the driver side;
3. The number on the round belt shroud is 901.106.101.5R;
4. The transmission serial number on the flat bottom spline is 223707 with another number on the housing where the axel connects of Ko.2477, the cast numbers are 901.301.311.01 and 901.301.101.02 and a build date of 38/65 are all on the trans case. It is a 5 speed transmission.....
5. The 5.5x15 Fuch Alloy wheels have a date stamp of 11/67;
6. The inside drivers door panel is dated 10/67 (red marker);
7. The paint color code is 96024-L which I understand is silver metallic (the car is red now).
Thank you for your time and expertise!
You wrote that the engine case halves have casting marks of 901.101.101.3R and 901.101.102 3R. This would be the earliest instance of the 3R cases and not even an instance of 2R & 3R. The 2R cases were used after your serial # as well. That leads me to suspect that the case was a replacement. Photos of the serial and type # might be more revealing. It is not a bad thing, nor unusual, to have a replacement case. Since you don't have a numbers matching car now anyway, there is no great significance to it. I'd guess that the engine is a mix of 1968 and 1969 911S parts. The transmission is from an early 1966 MY car so none of the drive train is original.
Thank you - very helpful. I'll post some pictures of the serial and type# when I have them.
Cheers,
Bruce
