Another hot rod

Kenny rolled the project car out of the shop's body and paint area a few weeks back after giving it a good cleaning.

Here we see the hot rod sitting up front in the showroom awaiting its mechanicals and final assembly.

I like the "reflection of a reflection in a reflection" on the door skin in the attached image. Don't look at it too long or you might just go down the rabbit hole. The photo credit for this nicely composed image goes to Ken Bronsord.

These two old Porsches shared the showroom floor for the recent Connecticut Valley chapter's open house at AAOC.

If the old adage rings true that one is known by the company that one keeps, then the hot rod got the benefit of a lift up the social arbiter's scale of repectability; the other car in the image is a factory built Rothmann's SCRS.

The ST and SCRS share many details characteristic of Race Department preparation for Rally use.

In many ways the two models represent historical bookends of factory Rally preparation techniques of the 911 concept.

Here we see a characteristic shared by both vehicles and appreciated by all: a very pleasing shape.

The attached image shows SCRS to the fore; the one in back is only an Olive Tart.

Readers of this thread will recall the keen interest that Gib, RAj, OliverR and all the ST fanatics on the board paid to a proper ST style oil cooling set-up when the project first started.

The attached image shows both Behr oil coolers hung in the fenders: the standard factory 2,2L 911S cooler in RH fender and its mirror image ST part sitting in the LH fender.

The hand brushed black-out paint treatment around the horn grill mounting areas conforms to original factory production details.

This image also shows the balsa lid nicely aligned and fitted. Getting the lid to look this nice required a bit of fettling. Given that this is an old race lid, the result that Ken achieved shows some real hot rodding talent.

The waviness of its surface, however, reminds one unmistakenly of its lightweight origins.

The shutter could not quite handle the combination of ambient light spilling through the showroom's picture window and all the fluorescent.

The lighting effect seems to flatten out the voluptuous ST shape in this image but I will post it anyway: another olive for Michael that may just contribute to the satisfaction of his sensual desires (automobile category).

It works for me!

Tom is pointing out the aerodynamic advantage contributed by deformation of a balsa lid at speed.

I think the engineers knew full well how it worked on the track but at the same time kept the scrutineers on plot in the paddock.

The last image for this evening shows the hot rod's engine lid grille. The version on the hot rod is copied unashamedly from Mike Moore's factory prototype grille and harkens back to the many variants used by the factory in the earliest days of the ST.

Readers will recall that we decided to leave the factory roll bar in bare ALU. In period, the Race Department painted these satin black, just like the steel version.

Thanks to Cam, Alan, Michael and John for prodding me to update the thread. Also, belated thanks go to Andyboy for digging out the archive photos of Russell's old tartan seats and to Bantam for his "129" research which I hope to revisit in a future post.

Is the difference in aerodynamics/downforce resulting from deformation of the fiberglass hood's shape (compared to the steel hood) really perceptable by the driver? It seems that the "scooping" would add drag but not much downforce. The fenders already act as sort of "fences" to pile up air on top of the steel hood.

911s raced in the targa and similar events found aerodynamics are secondary to the benefits of light weight around the twisty mountain roads. :)
