I think the gear box ratios should work well with the RSR-cammed 2,9L on our local roads - moderately open country roads with lots of hills and less trafficked interstates where the flow is 75ish.

Thanks also to Kenikh whose chart I have lifted out of your thread and shown below. The car will be shod with 4.30/11.60-15 Dunlop CR82 tires on the rear. They have a tire height of 24.5 inches. Power band will be a bit higher in the rev range due to cam timing.

I know that Bantam delights in detail and the images attached to this post are in the spirit of his OoA thread.

This first image shows why it may be advisable to tear down your 911's transaxle if it has not been inspected in a long while, especially when it is already out of the car and sitting on the bench.

The transmission in our 71S shifted smoothly and made no untoward noises. Nevertheless, a bearing race had cracked and was ready to let go. Just as well we had a look at it now...

Next let's take a look at the hardware we found in the box, the really good finds that excite the parts junkies among us:

The second image shows the AEJQX gears arrayed on the bench, shown right to left.

The factory 904 main shaft features in image three. No doubt pn 904,302,101,00, the OEM 904 main shaft allowing interchange of all pinions, was still available at a reasonable price over the dealer's parts counter when this box was put together back in the day.

The success of the ST, and Porsche in general, at such venues as disparate as the Targa and the Nurburgring, is often recognized as being due to reliability and, yes, proper gearing. Porsche went to great lengths to provide a full complement of gears to take best advantage of the available power. The 904 mainshaft provided the building block that opened up the full potential of the transaxle and allowed it to become a critical part of the high performance package offered by the Werks to its competition oriented clients.

Tom, was the billet intermediate plate in the box as well or is that a new one to go in?

Hi Cam:

The 911/01 still had its original intermediate plate when the transmission was removed from the 71S. The transaxle looked like it had not been serviced in a long time.

Scott McPherson at AAOC recommended use of a billet intermediate plate for the rebuild and that is what appears in the image. There are not many aftermarket parts on the hot rod, but this is one of them. It's cheap insurance, especially for those older, ham-fisted enthusiasts...
