After dropping in the 100L steel center fill tank the decision was taken to fasten it to the chassis with a factory tank strap rather than the standard clips.
You may recall that the tank strap brackets were previously welded on the RH and LH sides of the tank cavity so that the strap could be used.
The shock tower brace was fashioned from stock taken from the 917 parts bin and fastens with bolts whose crowns are turned down on the lathe to half standard thickness. The bolts pass through the cupped washers beneath the rod ends. The cupped washers were previously welded to the chassis prior to paint.
The factory prop rod is fastened to the balsa lid.
All the hardware for the cowl ventilation system is back from the plater and installed.
Absolutely Tom, it IS a 'hot rod' in the lineage of 'Ol Yeller', Ak Miller's 'El Cabellero', Reventlow's Scarabs, and others :cool:Carry 0n !!!!
Tom, I never see an old photo where the tank strap is mountwd with 100L STEEL tank.
I thought it was used only with Plastic Basf tank...
Coluld you give me more infos? I'm already in time to make some mods...:D
Hello Andrea:
Thank you for your post. It is very nice to hear from you.
Here is a period Werkfoto of a 1971 ST prepared to Safari specs sporting a strap to fasten its steel 100L tank, in this case one with an offset filler neck.
However, I think it unlikely that this treatment would be period correct for your 68 S.
Thanks Tom for photo and advice.
I appreciate very much the detail you used for strut bar (917 bar and the welding reinforcement area).
I saw the same solution on Frank's ST ...
What i like about your work is the extreme attention to details... i have the same approach, that's why i feel you work immediately familiar.
Great compliments, Tom, really.
I hope to meet you in March when a little "italian bombing squad" will invade USA.:D
Best
Andrea
Next the spare tire hold down rig is fitted in the fuel bay.
The footman's brackets at each of the three attachment points for the spare tire tie down rig are fitted with the same fine thread phillips head screws found on the 911 production car's kick panel and parcel shelf and are sourced out of the production car hardware bin.
Note that the brackets are attached to the heavy canvas straps of the rig by stitching the ends of the straps tightly around the cross bar of each of the three brackets.
We discussed the importance of the front bumper on every 911 and how it immediately communicates to the onlooker the identity of the model.
Here we see the front bumper for the project car just after being fitted.
I think this bumper style gives immediate context to the overall presentation of the car and shouts out the intended message: 2,3L ST!
The "light weight" prop rod is fitted to the front lid.
Wiring the lamps.
(housings for the fender mounted Cibies have been re-drilled so that the lamps sit vertically in the pods)
