Incidentally we share an enthusiasm for the great automotive journalists of the our youth: Henry Manney and Jenks. They are still the best in my book too.

Attached image shows the Race Department style fuel system plumbing under the front lid; note that the Werks lifted old 356 coil brackets from the parts bin to mount the ST and RSR twin benzin pumpen!

Second and third images provide additional views of ANDIAL nbr 129. A close look will reveal some period hardware; Bosch 2R high butterfly throttles topped with oem steel inlet funnels; race injection pump; pressure lines for center oiling camshafts feeding into sand cast magnesium cam box covers; Marelli 12 spark distributor as borrowed from the 917 for the twin plug ST engine); 906 fan; nickel plated factory headers and short diffusers designed to fit the rally muffler as originally developed for the 911R.

Thank you! But I only did the leg work to collect some of the original Race Department bits: twin spark Marelli, unmolested center oiling cams and matching cam towers, factory tin (still missing the bit that goes behind the injection pump), and the kurz diffusoren (short megaphones) that came off the Board's "Parts for Sale" listings from a fellow enthusiast. All the rest came with the old ANDIAL engine sourced for the project. The engine had original factory mfi version 906 grind cams but the snouts were turned down and spray bars were used rather than center oiling, although the sand cast dark magnesium center oiling covers (with the button seals still mounted) remained on the chain boxes and were re-used as you see in the pics. We switched to a nice pair of four journal, center oiling RSR cams with matching '72 dated RSR cam towers that we had on hand (sourced from a SCCA racer in Wallingford, CT). The factory headers and short diffusors were sent out for nickel plate, the finish used by the Race Department during the era of the ST. The amber shroud is original and came on the ANDIAL engine; it is not perfect but certainly serviceable. The rest of the amber tin is NOS and came from a parts trove in Germany that resulted from the inventory purge of the factory's 911 race parts many years ago. All the credit for the restoration and assembly of the engine as well as advice on details relating to finishes and hardware goes to Scott McPherson of Auto Associates of Canton, CT. I'm afraid I put the cart before the horse on this phase of the project but will take a step back and post details and images of the re-build next week.

Restorers please note the following deviations from a historically correct presentation of a Werks prepared long stroke 2,5L "ST" race engine:
1. We used later RSR "tousseled head" injection lines as that is what ANDIAL used when they prepped this engine for GTU; standard production car mfi steel lines would be correct.
2. John Dougherty, the prior owner of the engine, liked the steel inlet funnels plated pale gold rather than the black paint used by the Werks and they were re-plated to his taste.
3. The lightweight engine mount bar was introduced on the 2,8L RSR and is positively incorrect for "ST" (see the pic of the longstroke 2,5L engine from The Speed Merchants posted earlier in this thread). The bar used on the engine is an original RSR piece that I had collected some years ago when the idea of this project first took hold and we decided to use it just because it looks so nice. A standard (un-drilled) production car engine mount bar is correct for "ST." Otherwise, the presentation of the engine captures the factory correct look of a high butterfly injected "ST" engine TYP 911/70.

Engine assembly starts with a cleaned and tumbled case. Note that it had previously been shuffle pinned. This went back to Ollie's for some repair work and while they had it in the shop they did the oil bypass mod.

In the meantime, all the original hardware came back from the plater and is made ready for the assembly.

The connecting rods were sent out to be re-bushed and prepped.

Titanium was not only lighter but also much tougher than steel and while never homologated for the ST, a set of these did find their way into the old ANDIAL engine.

The first image shows them nicely displayed on the bench.

Next image provides a good view of the thrust bearing used on these rods, the same as used in the 12 cylinder 917 engines. The rod bearings were also treated to one of the high tech coatings.

The tods assembled on the crank are shown in image three.

The layshaft and pump drive are teamed up with a new turbo pump instead of the old 908 pump that came in ANDIAL 129.

The crank assembly is readied to lay in the case.

The third and fourth images show the layshaft, dry sump pump and crank assembly nestled in the case.

In the final image we see the case halves buttoned up.

Hello Reza! It seems a long time since we saw each other at RITV 5. And yes, I hope we can all get together and take a close look at the project car when it is completed, assuming everyone hasn't been bored to the teeth by all the photos and turgid prose I have been posting.
