Rolly's seat
The seat is in fact a 356 GT seat. They were identical to a Speedster seat (the metal frame was not wider). It appears that the factory guys took a Speedster shell and hammered over the back to make it flat across the top (and a little wider), they then added the extra padding on the back that a Speedster seat doesn't have. The front cushion is longer than a Speedster by about two inches. They didn't have as much padding on the sides as the Speedster version. The tracks were metal frame, unlike the Speedster's wood frame, and the sliders were the later type.
I have five of these seats, all are original and unrestored. One set is full leather, one set is vinyl and cord, and one single seat is perforated vinyl and cord. I'll bet they were available for the early 911s.
Does the 911 version have 17.5" spacing between hinge centers or 16" like the 356 version. Can someone post a photo of the 911 metal base frame?
I haven't found the pictures I took at John W. but I did find more of the elephant seat and another seat that was for sale on one of the Lit meets. This tilting frame might be 356

356 seat? but the tilting frame might be used in an early 911 too.

Perhaps I've missed it, (I do that a lot), but have we determined if the Factory ever installed these seats into a 911?

This is my "rare" Recaro Ideal 1 from 65-66, It is very comfortable, not a "squeezer":p
The first Speedster seats and later called GT seats were exact copies of lightweight aircraft seats from WW2... Messerschmidt I think...
J. Wilhoit is correct about the seats not being wider... 20+ years ago I spent over an hour measuring 2 raw uncovered seats a Speedster seat against a GT seat... I was conviced that the GT seat was wider but they are not!
They look wider but are just covered differently with less padding... They did usea metal base in the 356 and early 911. Same base as the early Recarro...
Those seats are basically the same as 356 GT seats and were definitely original in the early 911s from the late 1960s... Then they started using fiberglass.
No problem at at all Raj, I like to hear your input:)
I do think that the RS seat with the Square weave carpet on the side and back, is a great look for a pre 69 car.
