Another hot rod

The factory spare parts book confirms that two harnesses were standard specification for the 2,3L "ST," indicating that the Race Department considered it likely that these cars would find use on the rally circuit and provided restraint systems for both driver and co-driver.

In the attached image we see the rear mounting point for the RePa hosengurt for the co-driver.

The spare parts list shows two different harnesses.

I believe this example is the RECARO.

The unusual angled mounting hardware at the attachment point of the rear strap is (surprisingly) correct.

Jim used bolts with heads marked with the RePa logo to mount the harnesses.

We found the roll bar in an old time enthusiast's basement up in Lexington, Massachusetts.

The final bit of rally equipment is the Recaro fixed back bucket seat for the co-driver. Co-drivers would have been invited by the Werks to select the seat of their choice. This Recaro "Rally" would have been quite typical.

As you can see in this image, the yellow billboards with RePa logos silk screened in blue are slightly frayed. Similarly, the bolsters of the Recaro are slighly polished from wear and faded from age.

These old race parts have aged gracefully and should be kept as original as possible.

Readers interested in hardware details will notice the factory allen head bolts used on the roll bar footplates.

Oh great Tom, put the pressure on me! First, I notice there is no shift rod boot on the front of the trans, I notice you resisted the temptation to use stainless brake lines, I'm sure they were delivered with rubber as you have. I noticed the billet intermediate plate, the cast mag chain housing covers (although you may have mentioned that) the aluminum anti roll bar mounts, and you need to clean the overspray off the wire harness by the torsion tube. I have this terrible feeling that I missed some OBVIOUS item I shouldn't have!!! Okay Tom, what's my grade???

Ed is a bona fide P car over-achiever and makes a full grade of A. And, I hadn't noticed that nasty overspray!

The first image shows the deco tape going onto the rear bumper. There is no part number listed in the spare parts manual for the tape and I suspect it might just have been a generic item.

The second image is the MY 1972 "factory tour" ST showing the rear bumper treatment we used as a guide for the project car, except for one obvious deletion.

I have also enjoyed learning from the many knowledgeable enthusiasts who frequent the board and, actually, this project car simply would not have been possible without the resources that folks like Hugh, Gib, Raj, Thomas L. and so many others have posted over the years in various threads. I will have more to say on this point in a future post.

And hey, Tom Butler, I think you might have inadvertently accepted an invite to a forthcoming RiTV as Sithot meant Goshen, VA (not Goshen, CT)! No worries, as Cam would say, we will leave a light on for you.

This is the first image providing a clear look at the old plexiglas rear screen as installed on the project car. I believe that 2,2 sticker has been on there since the screen was first installed on an ST.

Ken and Jim polished out the major scratches and tape residue from this well-used screen. Evidence of prior race use is still plainly evident, however, from the many scratches that remain in its surface. But we were careful to preserve the 2,2 sticker and leave it unmolested, a link back in time to an unknown ST written off so many years ago in Germany.

A note of thanks also goes out to Mike Moore as we copied the Werks prototype engine lid grill from images of his astonishing car. Our's was salvaged from the parts of mangled five bar donors.
