Just found this thread while researching making a new paint code plate for my color-change hot rod build. Thought I’d add my datapoint, which is an August 1972 built 2.4T Sportomatic in Light Ivory, also with an 8 paint facility code.

BTW, does anyone know someone that is providing a service of stamping the new replacement paint code plates with the correct fonts?

I came across a 1/72 build 72 T in Grand Prix White. No evidence of color change...
I was led to believe the color was 'introduced' on the 73 RS and wasn't a standard paint color until the '74 model year. But this car appeared to have a correctly-stamped 908-9-2 paint code tag (correct font & size).
Anyone else ever see GPW on a car before the RS?
It is simple to change a badge. I would like to see photos, and have the VIN to confirm what the factory built the car as. Unless we have factory confirmation, it is all just idle speculation.
