Finally took Bill up on his tip . . .

Looking at a map, ~15 mi/24 km North of Paso Robles, Jolon Road makes a wide loop that starts out West/Northwest then turns North, into King City @ 101 --- ~60 mi/95 km total . . . just 5 mi/8 km more

Nondescript at the start, but there're not many off-ramps along that stretch of The 101, so, coming up from the South, it's tough to miss. Hotter than SLO that day, w/ very little traffic, and so, especially at this time of the year . . . a little bleak, spooky. 'The Hills Have Eyes.' Even though I'd studied the map, the road seems to take too long before going in the right direction. Rough, too

After a time, Jolon seemed to soften/smoothen, climb gradually, through some hills w/ curves, then flatten-out on a dry wide plain

Betcha this was where Bill talked about 'opening 'er up'


Swear . . . we saw, at most, a dozen cars --- the whole 60-some miles . . . all but one going the opposite direction

Camp Roberts

Originally an Army post, I believe? . . . but I have no idea what they do/did here. As we passed by, we could see these strange installs, to the West, clearly visible from the road: odd built-up berm-type revetments, three-sided, w/ what looked like stairs leading up one side to these built-in walkways that went around the tops. Lots of 'em, too --- hundreds, maybe . . . all spaced maybe 20 yards apart, in a big grid . . . with these big/tall what-looked-almost-like 'review stands,' every hundred yards, or so

No good/clear pictures --- sorry . . .

. . . but the only place w/ any traffic

After crossing the plain + passing Roberts, we drove through trees --- w/ moss (!)

Kinda surprising, too . . . considering how hot/dry everything was

After a run through the hills + trees, Jolon dropped back down a hillside, then headed North. Prettier, here. Barely a soul

After coming down, we crossed this narrow valley . . . small ranches, fenced, mail-boxes at the roadside . . . nothing too elaborate/prosperous

Then we saw these deer . . . just grazing in what looks like a mostly-dirt field. Out in the open + in broad day-light. Never seen such a thing


Then, just before The 101 --- vineyards, again

Back on The 101, and just another 50 mi/80km to Salinas, wondering . . . where's all the nasty traffic?

Fog's already rolling in --- late afternoon . . . ~18:00 PDST . . . when we took-off at Hwy 68, headed into Monterey, ~another 20 mi/31km

Found the traffic! --- but not too bad . . . and we had the fog for company. If you've never been here, to Monterey, then I can't really explain it. Traffic can be pretty awful, so --- the fact that we were even moving, like, at all . . . was a huge relief. Besides --- I love my company . . . = no hurry

Temps dropped . . . but nothing too bad. Zovig gets the goose-bumps if I so much as roll a window down --- and she was fine this whole time. And we were expecting things to cool off in the evening, anyway, so . . . no surprises

We were settled into our hotel by 19:00 PDST . . . watch out for that Islero

Dumped our stuff, coupla calls to The Ungrateful Offspring, quick change, then . . . headed downtown for something to eat



By-the-way . . . for anybody who's been wondering how this forty-some-year-old MFI'd, 901'd, high-compressioned, alu-lidded, air-cooled, oil-burning anachronism handles long days, dusty roads, heat, cold, hauling some really tall passengers + their cr@p all over Creation, then finishes off a 300-mile day with some around-town taxi-duty . . . . all I can say is . . . .



. . . look at Zovig!


1059 loves this stuff . . . just watch your butt + those white pants, K? . . . Nasty Car hasn't been washed since Spring, so . . .
