Here is the story of this car, as I know it.

1969-?: First unknown owner.
?-1980: Second owner
1980-1995: The current owner has used the car on the road, and the car had over 220.000 km on the clock.
1995-2002: Used during track days.
2002: The original engine broke and was replaced by a 3.2 (max 7.200 rpm), matted to a 915 gearbox with LSD; 3.2 brakes; 16" rims, etc.
Since, it is still used as much as possible.

Is it possible to have access to the kardex of this car, to discover who has ordered it?

Apologies if this has been covered. I'm looking to gain FIA HTTP Appendix K papers on my car. Now this is the tricky bit, it's a 1971 car but with a 2.5L engine. Are there any records of a 1971 built car running a 2.5L engine and ideally a 901 box..

Any info, pictures in period etc would be super appreciated!

There would not have been any 1971 cars with 2.5's in 1971. However homologation for those (actually all) cars goes well beyond the one year and these cars, and the homologation papers were continually updated. So I would have thought by 1972 and 73 there would be a number of 71 MY cars "upgraded" with 2.5's A good example is ex werks 1969 rallye car 119300932. That car was sold to various French owners post its period as a factory car and was entered in a number of Le Mans 24 hour events. In 1972 it was running a 2.5 engine as car #45.
So if you google the time it was sold a year or so ago all of that history will be there. In addition the Le Mans entry documents and race records for 1972 will show it as #45 with a 2.5 but it is a 69 shell and using, I presume, updated 1969S FIA papers to compete.

I would have thought there were similar records of 1971 cars but I cant see why you cant use the fact that the FIA papers which would have applied for 71 cars (actually a 1970 FIA document i think) were continually upgraded to keep the cars competitive

I would have thought that a conversation with whomever would need to certify the car before proceeding too far would help you in this quest.

Thanks Hugh, I agree. There seems to be evidence of a 1971 ST (I think 2.5 but records also state 2.3 - the internet..) in the TdF with Barth as a driver... Issue is then for a 1972 car I may be out of spec since I have a 901 box not a 915... The joys! :-)

After speaking with Chuck Miller about giving Michael Keyser’s website a plug, he suggested I post something to this thread which makes sense because I’d like to let people know about an incredible book Keyser authored with Jurgen Barth and Thomas Imhof… of course, its on the legendary Toad Hall 911 ST 2.5. The book also includes the Speed Merchants video which is also great. This thing is loaded with amazing stories… the Targa Florio adventure is incredible. What a car… the history, the documents and the photos… its a much have book. I don't know about you but I love the printed word and photo... books, magazines... there's something about having one in my hands. The web is a wonder resource but it can't replace a great printed book in my humble opinion.

Maybe the most well known book by Keyser that was reprinted 3 times and sold out all printings is on Bernard Cahier, the incredible French motorsport photographer. It took Michael many years of research, interviews and flying back and forth between the U.S. and Europe to complete it. It is a masterpiece.

Michael is a good friend of the Early 911 S Registry — offering an image of his ST to be used for the last RennSport EarlyS decal.

I’ve received so much help over the years from Michael Keyser …he’s become a good friend. He is extremely humble, unassuming, funny, generous, knowledgeable and has ownership to an incredible archive of photos—much of which he shot himself. But, Michael also owns the rights to all the photos that were taken during the shooting of McQueen’s film Le Mans. You know the one with Steve holding up his fingers in a V... yup, it belongs to Keyser. He’s done so much for me, I wanted to do something for him. So, please go to his website and take a look. There’s books, DVDs, and posters. Everything is right up our ally.

The ST is now owned by Swiss collector Marco Halter... who amazingly also bought Gib's tribute car. Marco is not just a collector... he races with a passion. He and his girlfriend Claudia won the Singapore to Saigon rally in a '64 Ford Falcon.

You may want to search this site for Bonomelli. A successful Italian privateer who raced the Targa and elsewhere. He raced and updated an SWB through the early 70s. These cars of the era were privately ran; updated with newer/faster parts as they became available or had the $. They ran the best they had and not much was thrown away if it still worked. If a team had a stockpile 901 gear sets, it was a major expense (well beyond the conversion) to shift to a 915. Most were built from street cars with only the most well-healed buying the latest model from factory.

There were short wheel base cars that were continuously updated and ran in IMSA gtu up through the early 80s. The registries of race entrants are still on line.
