Decalage . . .

I can’t remember the last car that that I owned that I actually stuck something on. Look, I’m not a big fan of stickers/insignia, in general --- or any kind of adhesive-based personalizing. And I’ve had to deal w/ enough of other people’s half-melted parking permits, non-present speed equipment decals, and questionable political statements to last me, plenty. I’m also a little shy about sticking something that I’m actually fond of on a car --- then watching it go driving off . . . or maybe having to explain to someone/anyone --- like a Prospective Buyer (or my Mom) . . . why something’s there

Any Raiders fans, out there?

And besides . . . cars always go away. Who gets attached, anymore?


But, then again . . . it does look like this one’s gonna be ‘round a while, so . . .

Maintenance Record . . .

Been looking for one of these since --- well . . . never. But when I saw this come up for sale --- here, on our site . . . I decided to pick it up. 1059 has effectively no history, prior to me . . . although I do have paperwork on all the previous ‘services’ . . . going back to my PPI + 1st repairs as done by John Forbes, back in NC/’08

From now on, The Nasty Car's Story will pick-up here . . . w/ me. Now, gotta pull some paperwork together --- then send that + booklet back to John/NC . . . + ask him fill out + stamp + sign + date everything . . . then ask Tony + Marco @TLG to do the same

Original Porsche replacement/supplement (perforated w/ ‘2’), purchased from Paul Chappell (aka route66kix), $371 --- don’t!

’70-‘71 Power Window Motor . . .

The Sorry Handful of us here who are stuck w/ Porsche’s 1st faktory power window install in their cars may recall the quiet terror of . . .
..1) . . . finding out that the motor was unique + weird + NLA since they stopped putting cyclamates in soft-drinks, and . . .
..2) . . . even so much as thinking about servicing/repairing/restoring/dealing-with one of these Little Beasties

If it were me, I would’ve preferred/ordered regular dumb old manual windows, myself --- but, well . . . looks like some Super Genius got carried-away w/ the option sheet Way Back When. So, when 1059’s pass-side motor inevitably packed-in . . . that was it. Oh --- I have functioning elec windows, alright . . . but, because of the configuration of that First System’s switch-cum-motor --- + because the replacement isn't 'the right/same one' . . . I can not operate the pass-side lifts from the driver’s side switch. Which makes no difference to the way the car runs/works/etc, of course --- but . . .

. . . every time I have to un-hitch my non-inertia driver’s-side belt to reach across/twiddle w/ the pass-side switch . . . I’m reminded that the wrong motor’s over there, buried in that door

All I was really hoping for was to get a definitive answer regarding the part number. Original '70-'71 electric window installs weren’t exactly common when they were new --- even fewer survivors, now . . . so, if I could get a decent/clear photo of that kooky motor --- or, better yet . . . an actual part-number . . . maybe I’d scare-up something useable/functional --- eventually

As things turned-out, some members on our board, here, got together, dug-up some of their motors, then did some checking/testing/trading . . . . and this Little Bundle ended-up coming my way

Insurance . . .

The Nasty Car’s still sorta in an extended ‘shake-down’ mode . . . meaning there’s still some miscellaneous broken sh!t that I’m not ready to leave alone, just yet. Still --- next to on-going maintenance/repairs . . . insurance is prolly my single biggest/scariest annual no fun/routine/out-of-pocket expense that I have. Also --- my most anxious one

No insurance = no driving

Also no sleeping

Never had so much sitting on four wheels before. Last appraisal was ~6 months ago, and the value then was $225k. Since my last policy was for about half o' that --- + cost $989 . . . I was expecting a pretty big bump in my bill, so . . . did some shopping

Now . . . I’ve been w/ Haggerty + since Day One. And zero complaints. Also zero interaction --- which is good thing, since I buy insurance hoping never to need/use it. But Haggerty isn’t an underwriter

Chubb? . . . is . . .

. . . and if you don’t have an ‘agreed value’ policy for that collector/special-interest/garage trophy vehicle, then --- IMO . . . you don’t have insurance. Dead serious. Check those policies --- especially considering what’s been going on w/ Early 911 values lately . . .

Can't believe there aren't any pictures of one of those motors opened up. I'll bet there is a gear box in there that could use some fresh grease.

My Friend --- I would love to pop this sucker open + peak inside . . . if it wasn't the only one that I had. 'Cause it looks like it has a cork gasket --- which I'm almost sure will frag the absolute instant that I so much as look at it funny . . . and I've been hunting too long

Maybe the next one?

Or? . . . how 'bout when I dig that old one out of The Nasty Car? Apart from wiring . . . how different could it be?

Outer Rocker Panels --- NOS Porsche . . .

When I first bought her, 1059 had some rust-through on her driver’s-side outer rocker --- just in front of the jack-spur . . . showed-up during the original PPI. At that time, I made a quick decision + replaced both outers --- w/ Restoration Design panels . . . and moved on. John Esposito did some fettling w/ them, when he re-finished the car, a few months after --- not the panels fault . . . and, since then . . . no issues. To look at 'em . . . no one would know . . .

. . . ‘cept me. And I’m an idiot

The only real/obvious ‘tell’ that I can see to distinguish RD’s bit from Porsche’s is when the threshold ‘s removed. Faktory panels have this little ‘window’ stamped into the upper/forward flat of the pressing. John also commented that the RD bits' contours --- at the outer edge/door bottom . . .‘need some work’

Whatever the issue --- John took care of it. And I can’t tell. And like I said . . . no issues

But Faktory is --- Faktory . . .

. . . and so, while I can still get Real Deal Faktory panels . . . etc


So. 20 years from now --- when the next paint job comes up . . . these’ll get cut-in
