In my experience (nothing even close to Harvey's) the confusion arises because - certainly here in Europe - exhaust headers are described metrically by their internal diameter but imperially by their external diameter !
Hence we have:
1 1/2" headers with an internal diameter of 35mm
1 5/8" headers with an internal diameter of 38mm
1 3/4" headers with an internal diameter of 42mm
I consulted a number of specialists when considering header sizes for my 2.5 litre twin-plug engine & got the unanimous advice that unless it was a full race engine - & thus spending most of its operating time in the upper rev range - then 1 1/2" (35mm) headers would be the best solution.
Do you by any chance know the part number?

I'll be the first to 'stick my head above the parapet' & say that those 'ST' models I've seen in person here in the UK have all had Karmann paint tags ...
So, what about the first series (first 500) 1973 RS? Did those have Karmann paint tags as well? I understood that first series RS's had thinner roof skin etc..
Just feather the throttle in first
Pipes burble contentedly
East out from Sperryville
Dive hard right down 231
Straight into the heart of a silent valley
A dancing wraith in an Olive robe
Heading due south in a pre-dawn mist
Now dive and squat
Then turn and dart
A languid, fluid swing of the hips follows each faint twitch of the haunches
As the throttles crack open
Just past apex
Unhurried steps of the dance measured to a fugue of megaphone exhaust
Deep booming tympany builds to redline
Answered by shattering staccato on the over-run
Free fall down a twisted ribbon of asphalt
The echo of its passage
Summons forth a regal oculus in the heavens
Revealed now from behind the ridgeline
Mute witness to the dance
Its luminescent majesty diffuses in the mist
And sets aglow sleeping meadows
Blanketed in blue grass and clover
Change down and brake hard
Passing through each in turn still slumbering Etlan and tiny Banco
Roll again onto the throttle
Haunches twitch and
Squat low on the tarmac
The dance begins anew
An urgent release of dry thunder beneath a cloudless sky
Exploding into the perfection of first light
A mystical union of steel, spark, air and fuel
Bound for the Piedmont
Tom, i dont know what 'oculus' means, but otherwise great transliteration of what musta been a tremendous driving experience :-)

Both our cars are at the Mecca of Early 911's at the moment.
How about we meet when mine is ready for an early morning drive.
Tom:
Who knew you were such a talented poet...we all thought you were a Porsche historian digging up old spec sheets and stories about how parts came to be used, and then hanging them on your art project. One line in that beautiful song of lines captures what the STs represent to me....'A mystical union of steel, spark, air and fuel'... Enjoy that wonderful ride as much as possible.
The Porsche bug is a sickness. It's just that some of us are sicker than others! This thread is a testament to that! Nice ST build.
