BaT Description:
This 1970 Porsche 911E is finished in Irish Green over black basketweave leatherette and has been with the seller for the past 23 years. It is one of approximately 667 Karmann coupes built for the model year and receives power from the numbers-matching 2.2-liter injected flat-six, which is paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox. It also features vented 911S disc brakes and the comfort package, which includes a leather-wrapped steering wheel, velour carpet, polished rocker trim, and a set of 14″ Fuchs. The car is reported to have sat untouched from 1979 to 1995 and showed an indicated 12,346 miles at the time of the seller’s acquisition. A recommissioning was performed between 1995 and 1998, including a repaint in the factory color, $30k in driveline work, and an overhaul of the brake system. This 911E is now being offered with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, documentation, the factory manuals, and a clear British Columbia title in the seller’s name.
Sometime in the late 1970s, the car was side swiped and written off by the insurance company before being sold to a Seattle, Washington salvage yard. The previous owner purchased the car from the salvage yard in 1979 with the intention of repairing it, though it sat largely untouched until the seller’s 1995 acquisition. The accident damage was professionally repaired with the installation of a replacement hood, front bumper, one front fender, and driver-side rear quarter panel. The original door lock post on the driver’s side has been retained, and the repair work was followed up with a full repaint in the factory Irish Green utilizing Herbert’s Standox polyurethane paint.
The 14″ Fuchs alloys remain installed, and a matching spare resides in the front compartment. Braking is managed by 4-wheel vented discs, with aluminum ATE “S” calipers up front. Both front calipers have been rebuilt with stainless steel pistons. The original Boge hydro-pneumatic self-leveling front struts remained up front when the seller acquired the car in 1995, though they have subsequently been replaced with a traditional torsion bar front suspension, including a front sway bar out of a 911S.
Black basketweave upholstery covers on the seats, door panels, and dash fascia. A factory Blaupunkt radio and center dash speaker remain installed, along with the leather-wrapped steering wheel and velour carpet. Non-original interior items reportedly include a replacement headliner and dash pad. 20,400 miles are shown on the on the 5-digit odometer, approximately 8k miles of which have been added by the seller since 1998.
The 911/01 2.2-liter flat-six utilizes Bosch mechanical fuel injection and is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. After sitting unused for a number of years, the engine and fuel injection system required attention and subsequently received an overhaul by a Porsche specialist in 1996. A new set of Mahle pistons and cylinders were installed, as well as Carrera chain tensioners and Turbo valve covers. Engine #6201148 is confirmed as original by the included Porsche CoA. SSI heat exchangers and a stainless muffler have also been added. The included Porsche Certificate of Authenticity confirming the original configuration.
The original glove compartment books and an assortment of factory sales literature are included with the sale. Records and receipts from service dating back to 1995 also accompany the vehicle, along with a bill of sale from 1979.
