Dick and Jerry organized a great day for us all at the CT Vallery Region PCA show on Father's day. Thanks for all the effort Dick; much appreciated.
I really enjoyed catching up with MaMo and seeing all the changes he has made to his car. It makes a strong statement with an early front bumper and a slick back engine lid. The revised rear flares and a set of 15s now give it a Werks Gr4 look.
Aside from a strong showing by the R contingent, there were also some serious longhood restorations in attendance, including a '68 912 coupe done to Parade standards.
Ray's champagne yellow twin grill roadster sitting on Rudge knockoffs was my pick for best in show.

Tom, you humble me with mentioning my car in this epic thread. Compared to your Tart, mine would be more suited for delivering pizza... or maybe if I'm lucky, vener snitchel. :) I thank you.
It was great to speak with you again and finally see your unbelievable car... it's everything I imagined and more... a lot more. I can't imagine anyone ever coming even close to duplicating a more accurate or stunning example of an ST as you did with The Tart. Your passion is inspiring. She came from Big Sky country.
Grew up right there just outside of Simms, where her people were in the cow business and ran a fine spread that stretched out to the north in a broad, open sweep along the Sun River. When we first met up I imagined her as that same sort of woman that the old Jordan Motor Car Company ad copy immortalized. You know, the one describing a mysteriously un-named bronc-busting gal, out there on the range “somewhere west of Laramie.”
Maybe she was that girl as a kid. But I guess they had no idea of what to make of her out there in Simms after she was grown. As things turned out she came east for college and came down to New York from Providence after finishing up at RISD. That’s when we ran into her downtown at Max’s Kansas City. Everyone called her CB, but her real name was Carlotta Baxter Ames. She was tall and big boned with a splendid coil of light colored hair fixed atop a finely shaped head, a slender neck and perfect teeth. She was heart stoppingly pretty.
At first it was a lumpy green bent window coupe that took her where she needed to go. In those days any bent window coupe was just an old beater and ownership confirmed one as an art student or some other form of eccentric. Hers had a VW engine and little else to recommend it. Other than the shape that is. That was exactly what she liked about if of course, the shape. She was a designer and adored the sculptural allure of that musty smelling, green rat. It was still on Rhode Island plates and you could find it most nights parked downtown near Spring or Broome.
But then she broke in at the top. Did the interior of Sarnoff’s corporate jet, Steve Ross’s office, the cost-no-object kind of stuff that a designer could actually make serious dough on. Eventually the bent-window coupe gave way to a brand new black out trim targa. But she still hung out with us every now and then to talk cars, when she wasn’t running ragged her team of young underlings from Parsons with her ideas for new jobs.
She tried to teach us the ABCs of design. You know, all that stuff about how a good design needs to balance mass but at the same time incorporate a variety of forms and that one should use contrast of texture, color and material to create a design that communicates a message; always subtract in order to add and remember that what’s left has to be catching in order to sustain interest and compel the eye to linger. For her detail was a kind of homage to life itself.
We figured her for a lost soul though, somehow. You know, a rodeo queen making her living running with the A-list of corporate sharks in Gotham. After it happened we never talked about her much. I guess it was the sheer horror of it.
Sometimes life leads to places no one should ever go. That’s where they found her, downtown in Alphabet City, a sunless abyss beneath unseen sky. At dawn when the black and white nosed over to curb on Avenue A they found her slumped behind the wheel of her black out trim targa, a Togo brown tomb all lined in cork hide, the spike still nestled in her vein.
But that’s not how I ever think of her. To me she will always be somewhere west of Laramie. Out there on the Rocky Mountain Front with her head tilted down into the wind to keep the tall felt hat on her head, dressed in high waisted brown duck pants with suspenders, bib-front shirt and worn chaps, roping calves ahorseback at the spring branding, riding hard on the broad sweep of the Ames ranch under that big sky, along the Sun River, out of Simms.
Am reading this thread lately ... and every time I do ... I have to make sure my SO or the people arround me can see that I am just reading text ... as my face very likely resembles the face of a 14 year old having discovered his dad's nudy collection.
The details, the history, the actual implementation of the details ... the collective wisdom and knowledge of this forum should not be lost. It would be interesting to make "ultimate" or "sticky" threads about specific histories and technical articles to create a collective of the amazing knowledge here: the ultimate 72 oil tank discussion, the ultimate "met in person" discussions with famous porsche drivers, the ultimate fender forming/welding thread, etc etc etc ... There is so much knowledge here and such talented people and it sincerely surpasses any of the books.

I have been trying to find information on the tyres fitted to this marvelous car but did not succeed in locating relevant info in this otherwise extremely detailed thread. I noticed in a pic that Dunlop Racing "post historic" 475/1000-15 tyres were fitted at the front. I suspect that 525/1050-15 have been used at the rear but would be grateful for confirmation.
I am trying to understand the differences between the M&L range and the Post Historic range. By any chance, are the Post Historic tyres homologated for road use? Any idea of the mileage possible with such tyres?
Feedback on these tyres would be greatly appreciated, thank you very much in advance.

Group 4 parts, construction details, period images, Werks source material and stories all served to build out this thread. There is now a not inconsiderable resource of authentic, fully documented ST information available right here on the Early 911S Registry for fellow members to enjoy.
Perhaps the sheer volume of material would not be quite so interesting if presented as a simple naming of parts, of which it turns out I have admittedly done quite a lot. But by now it is clear to all that a fair bit of story telling has been employed to communicate the information in a (hopefully) engaging manner, as the thread moves through all facets of the subject matter at hand, the C and D series Type 911S Competition.
It is gratifying to know that this story succeeds in fully engaging some readers like Doc72 who, so enraptured, finds it necessary “to make sure my SO or the people around me can see that I am just reading text.”
Speedmat, please note the factory spec tire for a nine inch rim on the rear of a Group 4 911S was 4.30-11.60/15 Dunlop Racing. The manufacturer emphatically declares these “not for highway use.” They are not sticky like the TB15 but are period correct for ST. I wanted only the Werks spec tire on the car and, to my eye at least, they look superb.

Thank you for the information. These tyres look very special, with the right "bulge" and vintage pattern. Avon CR6ZZ would look right also - too bad their larger sizes are only available in "taller" tyres.
