Special early 1964 features on 1965 cars

Here's the left-side dash attachment in 301382:

Those yellow arrows point to the locations where captive nuts would have engaged the two left side screws holding a "4-button" dash.

In 301382 one of the captive nuts is removed and a stud which is welded to the dash comes through (it needs a washer) to hold the front of the dash in place. The other captive nut is still in place but unused. On the right side there's also a single stud. There's nothing replacing the fifth of the "4-button's" screws.

I do know that somewhere before I got the car 301382 was in an accident and needed a new left front fender and left door.

The question:

Does anyone know whether this is an interim dash solution by the factory or a kludge to adopt a later-style dash to replace a crash-damaged "4-button" dash?

hmmm--not sure what to think about this.
301358 has a similar history also been in a big fender bender it even bent the metal sructure of the dash.
unused and removed captive nuts here as well--- but 1358 is not the best reference car

in your foto there is no paint where the nut would be so it was removed after painting the shell...one would think that in the factory they would have removed it prior painting...but who knows

Jim, as logged in my registry, your car does not have the 4-button dash, right? Of the cars I know of after yours, only (*) 301421 claims to have the 4-button dash. I had assumed that they changed to new dash at or shortly after yours.
(*): also 302003 claims to have 4-button dash, but I doubt the nfo.

so I doubt whether you not having 4-button dash has something to do with the accident.

By the way, I was troubled by a slipping steering rod joint. I just could not get it tight enough to not slip anymore. The toothing seemed very fine and maybe a bit worn. I tried replacements but never found one to match my toothing.

Just this week I found out that this problem was already identified in 1965 and as of 1966 they changed the toothing to the rough metrics.

Does anybody have any tips/tricks to prevent the original toothing from slipping?

i have a steering rod with fine splines ... a spiral pins prevents it from slipping..looks pretty factory to me do not know the vin of the car it came off but i do know the transmission # 1011something

@pss Split pins are frequently installed in '65 Cup cars. Involves drilling through casting of course.

not necessarily through casting but the rod itself...red dot shows position of the pin on the one i have--pictured is of course not the fine spline type
