Your car looks very nice indeed, you must be very pleased with it. I have just found some new old stock fog lamps with yellow bulbs just like yours should look cool once fitted.

Just looking at your photos, it looks like your wiper arms have been put on the wrong way round (quite a common mistake), the one with the bent arm should be on the other side, that way they will park better and look neater.

Max,
Rear fog works off of the fog light switch for front lights. The switch itself works this way: pulling out the knob to full stop activates the front fogs only. Then, turning 1/4 turn at full stop turns on the rear. On my car, the switch is centered between the fresh air controls and the steering column. A quick look at the Porsche PET would give the part number for the switch.

You are correct, they were at one point in some of the photos. I have since swapped them over. Very good eye!

Attachment 198595Attachment 198597Regarding your original spare, I have a '71 Targa that came with the original spare tire on a deep 6, tire is a Veith-Pirelli made in Germany. Tire was mounted maybe once or twice on the car. What are you doing with your spare and what will go in its place? Thanks

Mike,

On my list is to find another loose Deep Six, in any condition appearance wise but still usable, mount a modern tire on it, and put it in the car in the off chance of actually having to use it.

The current spare tire/wheel is more museum artifact and for show. I plan to take it out and keep it for concours.

Your spare tire/wheel combo looks like it's worth preserving in a similar way.

I haven't seen too many of these, but I've seen enough to know that the VIN sticker in mine is the only one I have seen to date.

Can anyone shed any light on when these stickers were offered, and if this in fact where it is supposed to be?

I obviously have no frame of reference...

Thanks for all the public and private messages about the ESSES article, very much appreciated. It was a pleasure to research and write about my car.

Over the holidays, I visited with Captain Mike's wife Jean, which included a snoop around her attic. There I found the original Amco crash bars he put on the car in 71, the dealer installed at delivery A/C, as well as the original 69 year only dash and speaker grill. Remember, nothing was ever thrown away...

I was so happy to have Jean scan some pictures of the car from the early days of Mike's ownership. Here are a few from its early years.

1. Front view, circa 1971. He had put Amco bars front and back, and added Talbot mirrors at that point.
2. On the back straight at Virginia International Raceway, circa 1970. VIR was basically cut through a cow pasture by a group of car enthusiasts. It died out and was resurrected in the past decade to what we know it today.
3. The car is brand new, summer 1969. Love the look on his face!
4. Somewhat personal but has been published in the past by them. Car was honeymoon chariot in 1975.

I wish there were some from his road trips to Sebring and Watkins Glen as he was an avid racing enthusiast. Maybe she'll dig them up eventually.

Heirloom quality archives to be sure........

I have to admit getting a little knot in my throat as I looked over your photos and re-read your story from beginning to end again.

This is a car that obviously meant more than just an enthusiasts dream. It became a significant portion of his life and was there in good times and in bad.......always just a drive away from another good memory to be made, to now be shared.

Truly awesome car.........good on you for becoming the deserving owner to carry the torch high.

This photo was also the cover of the Winter 2001 issue of ESSES.

I also went to the last article of you and your new friend in our magazine.....ESSES, and re-read the entire issue from front to back. I do this alot between issues.

I have to say, that knot returned as I looked over the photos and thought about a guy and his life well spent on a love affair with his sports car.
Not just any sports car, but a true thoroughbred sports car that can become one with a person's own soul.
His personna.
That bond becomes more than just a thing to notice. It is something ethereal. Like the good feeling one gets when you slip on a pair of your well worn driving gloves. Like when you reach down and pull your bucket seat up against your racing harness or your seat belts and become one with that living breathing entity surrounding you.

Rounding thru the next apex with the motor behind you up on cam and the rear tires scrabbling for purchase against tarmac.

That kind of thing which is intangible to most folks, but to the person who has owned, or now owns and drives a car like we all here know about.
A tightness, kind of a little moment rises up in your throat, and makes a guy breathe just a little different.

And when viewed in contrast to the pictures that records these memories of a life lived in joy of ownership of a Porsche such as this.........well, I think you all know what I mean.
Its more than just special.

Its real stuff.
