I have 8 Fuchs done by Harvey.

My wheels are now worth more than what I paid for the whole car. If - this number is even close. Which I doubt.
Richard Newton
Do You Really Need Round Wheels?
Richard,
The Fuchs on that blue car are not deep offset, 911R wheels.
I'm sure you have an article that you've written on the value of rare Fuchs wheels. Maybe post it?
I guess I should just skip the "for sale" section, and just post my NOS and rare parts here?
I don't understand the criticism. Harvey is the best in the business and the lead time to get wheels through his process is 14 months. And the cost to refurbish two wheels is probably close to $1K now. 7R rims in poor condition sell for ~5K. Therefore, if purchased now and brought to the same standard it would cost you 6K and you would wait 14 months. Frank was asking a 30% premium which is now down to 15% to have them now. i don't think it's unreasonable to ask what you want and be ready to negotiate.
GLWS! Frank.
Frank,
I haven't written anything about the value of wheels. I have enough trouble keeping up with the cars.
I don't think Harvey is selling those wheels. I think the seller is mentioning Harvey because they were done by the best guy in the business. It's sort like saying your car was restored by Paul Russell. If you take the time (and money) to have the best person restore your you can probably sell the car for more. It's sort of a certification of authenticity.
Right now though a restoration is not going to bring the big money. Original preserved cars with lots of documentation is what's bring the money.
We're getting very close to the art world. Most of the practices of the art world seem to eventually filter down to the car world. We're still dealing in little bitty numbers though. Keep in mind that the Chairman of Sotheby's went to prison and was fined $7.5 million for some questionable auction practices.
We aren't even close to that level in this business - yet.
Richard Newton
If the seats are worth 8k or so, you gotta have these too.
we can probably post anything that BHCC has for sale here.

You are right, $2500 for a radio antennae with the original box is resonable:eek:... But to make a guy pay shipping on top of that pushes it over the limit.
PT Barnum would be proud of this sale IMHO, there is a sucker born every minute!
But I still think the Aluminum decklid I posted for $6500 tops that one so it is a little bit of the pot calling the Kettle black...
I predict that the antennae will sell for very close to $2500 in the end.
Seems like $2500 is magic number? I think this is a good reason to be into 911's and not 356's! At least this guy is gracious enough to provide free shipping in the USA.

What?
Are you guys yankin my key chain?
What makes it so special?
Confused (well more than normal) I thought restoring my Speedster was crazy when it came to prices until I started playing with '65 911 :)
Sorry I can't provide the specifics on early key fobs - they are rare in good original or NOS condition as they all wore out. I never wanted one bad enough to understand what makes one worth more than the other - color year, embossing, who knows.
$2,500 is not a lot of money. If you need an original fob you'll pay it. Just as you paid. $400,000 for that Speedster basket case.
Ok, the basket case guys might not spend it but the guy who'd just spent over $800,000 for the #1 condition speedster sure will.
Frank, there's a lot of money floating around in today's world. A single car garage (146 sq. ft.)in Chelsea just sold for almost $470,000. The world is awash in money. At least certain parts of the world.

All perfect examples of why I am getting out of the Porsche restoration hobby. (keeping the ones I have, just not starting new projects) It used to be reasonably affordable fun. I guess everyone has a different sense of what if affordable, and what is just stupid, and Porsche parts were always exponentially more expensive than other marque's. Now though, I just can't justify it. I found another marque that is still affordable, and happily keeping my fingers dirty with that:)
:rolleyes:and for double that, you can get a key chain and antenna
You have to love that tank. I seriously doubt that anyone will ever reproduce it.
Richard Newton
Huh?
......
Frank, Isn't this already repopped?
Totally there with you.... I just saw a pair of destroyed old stock seats go for $2000 that need a complete rebuild... a 5 digit NOS dash... I started removing the tool kits from my cars when taking it to the shop because they were worth thousands....I'm not criticizing, themarket is what it is, but I lost interest... This year I've sold both my 912s (keeping my 911T because otherwise I'll never be able to justify buying another) and I'm playing with my old bimmer (2002) and Alfa (GTV) instead. You can buy 8 BMW wheels for the price of a Fuchs ;-( No longer fun for me either...
Parts prices are continuing to rise while the blue of the cars seems to have flatlined or decreased. Curious.
Here's one for the books.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...-15-fuchs.html
The fuel lines may be a bargain. It would cost a lot more to have them fabricated. I'm not sure how many of this lines are on the market right now. Probably not many.

You simply haven't done much homework. They are not a bargain. In fact, they are useless junk, unless you happen to have the missing lines (not likely). Try calling some real Porsche parts professionals. You just might find that you can still buy parts for your 911 at reasonable cost and actually receive the correct part and in usable condition. I know of a ,grumpy ,old, transplanted, SoCal, Surfer Dude in the Pac Northwest that would tell you the exact same thing

Ok I am starting to think people are listing items at crazy prices just to make this thread.
I agree.
It used to be that I could count on doubling my parts postings because of my greed and pricing prowess.
Now people are just doing this for entertainment. I'm very put out by it.
I will however use this as a PSA for pricing. If a specialty part happens to fit a car worth $1M and there are no other ones on the market, why is $10k so outrageous if an RS owner needs one?
I'm thinking about starting a "Seriously?? (Part Deux)" thread, as it seems price checks and hood strut decal typo threads are more far interesting than an earnest question about something kinda important like the differences between and performance of 1965-73 911 air boxes.
And don't get me wrong: I care about typos...
Makes sense, and kind of mirrors Porsche's parts pricing, wherein some things are insanely expensive while others—959 seat rails, for instance—are available at Chevy Cobalt prices. Or 1970s fan shrouds vs 1980s Carrera 3.2 fan shrouds (that was a no-brainer).
On the other hand...how can you sleep at night, putting that newly minted RS 2.7 owner out $10k? You've only been storing the part for 35 years...
Don't get me started on those hood shock decals. Maybe free would be a good price but spending actual money on an incorrect part is really insane.
Richard Newton
911MRP - an interesting question.
Did the originals use a steel frame - or an aluminum frame?
At $10,000 it could be worthwhile to create some new originals.
Hey - we do that with cars. "All 15 of the original 10 cars are here for this event."
Frank has created his own nightmare topic here. :)
Richard Newton
As prices increase you're going to see a lot more counterfeit cars and parts. There was a company here in Florida that was making "original" RS ducktails. They were using 911S aluminum frames and repo fiberglass. They were really really nice.
A friend of mine once speculated about how many Bugattis can you make from one Bugatti? There is an entire industry dedicated to creating these cars. I won't even get into how many counterfeit Ferrari GTOs are out there.
The basic rule is to never counterfeit anything cheap. No one will ever make a reproduction of my 5th grade art work. They may, and have, created a lot of Renoirs. As Porsche prices escalate we'll see a few more "authentic" RSRs. We already have several questionable 917s.
We might start with ducktails that sell for $10,000. :)

I was just looking through the PCA judging manual. Here's the reason for the high parts prices.
Non-standard reproduction parts are subject to demerits (if the judge can tell the part is a reproduc- tion, by definition, it is non-standard).
Reproduction parts are really not acceptable. Unless the judge says the reproduction part is close enough. :)

Richard,
Your quote is out of context. It is from Section C-2.2. PRESERVATION GROUP of the Parade Competition Rules (PCR) and applies only to the Preservation Group of the Concours. It is also worth noting this group is NOT about looking for dirt; it is 100% about originality.
I'm amazed how quickly they judge cars in the preservation class. Much faster than the Ferrari and Corvettes which can take hours.
Ferrari is the the process of rewriting their guidelines for the preservation class. Here are the 2015 Guidelines

imagine the laundry lady is giving the jeans a proper washing cycle...
Man were we stupid. We used to get off work, take a shower and put on nice clothes to meet girls. THink of all the time we could have saved not washing up?
A great American, Mike Rowe, chose to put in his two senses on this.
This morning, for your consideration, I offer further proof that our country’s war on work continues to rage in all corners of polite society. Behold the latest assault from Nordstrom’s. The “Barracuda Straight Leg Jeans.” http://bit.ly/2oYpyBn
Finally - a pair of jeans that look like they have been worn by someone with a dirty job…made for people who don't. And you can have your very own pair for just $425.00.
Here’s the official description, from their website.
“These heavily distressed medium-blue denim jeans embody rugged, Americana workwear that's seen some hard-working action with a crackled, caked-on muddy coating that shows you're not afraid to get down and dirty.”
On the positive side, Nordstrom’s isn’t purging their shelves of work-related imagery, like the owners of Monopoly did when they replaced the wheelbarrow with a rubber ducky. They seem to value icons work. What they don’t value - obviously - is authenticity.
I understand the appeal of buying broken-in jeans. I mean really, who has time these days to wait for a pair of jeans to naturally fade? I also understand the different cuts. Might as well get something that fits and feels comfortable. But they lost me years ago with their various stages of “distress.” The stone wash and the acid wash the rinsed wash and the bleached wash... And they really lost me when they started tearing holes in them on purpose.
I saw a pair of jeans at Macy’s the other day that looked like they’d been bathed in boric acid, hung up and shot multiple times with a twelve-gauge, and then pounded on a rock down by the river. They too, were on sale, for $249.00.
But forget the jeans themselves for a moment, and their price, and look again at the actual description. “Rugged Americana” is now synonymous with a “caked-on, muddy coating.” Not real mud. Fake mud. Something to foster the illusion of work. The illusion of effort. Or perhaps, for those who actually buy them, the illusion of sanity.
The Barracuda Straight Leg Jeans aren’t pants. They’re not even fashion. They’re a costume for wealthy people who see work as ironic – not iconic. To them, might I suggest the revolutionary new "Borax Wash," which I discovered some years ago while rescuing birds who had the misfortune of falling into Searle’s Lake in the lovely and picturesque town of Trona.
If Nordstrom’s wants to carry them, the description would read something like this:
“Finally - a pair of jeans for the hard-working gent who doesn’t want to actually wear them. The Borax Wash is so rugged and so manly, they don’t even need a human to hold them up! So sit back and relax, secure in the knowledge that your work pants can’t be folded or stored like other jeans. Show the world you mean business by owning the only jeans that can’t be worn! The jeans, that can stand on their own!”
$600 - only at Nordstrom.
Mike
