Barn Find 1967 911S project

Thanks to my good buddy Bob Marx I was able to find this car! It's not often that you get an opportunity like this so I had to jump on it. Bob and I picked the car up today, here is what I know about the car so far:

The car needs a full restoration but it's all there and looks to be numbers matching (engine number is in range). I'll know for sure when I get the COA. So far I've pulled the knee bolster as well as the dash pad. The numbers on the lower dash are there as well as the grease pencil mark on top. The doors even have the last 3 digits plus an S stamped on them. Even the factory radio is still in the dash, I thought that was really cool! It looks like the original color is Bahama Yellow. This color has really grown on me lately, obviously it will go back to this color when I restore it. Another really cool thing is the car has what look to be factory steel ST flares! They will be removed and will either go on my '69 or be sold to help pay for the restoration. I took lots of pictures today, hope you guys enjoy them.

Great find! I've nearly completed a similar find and restoration. Car looks like it might have some interesting history.

Yeah, that's one of the first things that cought my eye. I wonder how long they've been on the car? Bob thinks I'm nuts but I'm finding it hard to cut these off, I may just leave them. I'm not going for a concourse pebble beach resto here, it will be built up as a period correct sports purpose machine. I personally think ST flares fit the theme, not to mention they're already on the car. Thoughts anyone?

I went with Bob to look at the car and it turned out to be the real deal, he was looking for a cheap parts car so as soon as he passed it up I made an offer. More pics and details to follow.

I have seen dash plaques in 67-68. They were dealer gifts. The ones that I have seen had a brass crest not colored. I believe the colored crested ones were an aftermarket deal. Does the car have any rollbar mounts or dead pedal? The flares are there for a reason. That car was likely raced in period. I would leave them on and restore it as a race oriented car. Great find.

I vote for leaving them on, they're part of the car's period history. It would be nice to know when and why they were put on however!

The only thing I know for sure is that they were on the car when the previous owners dad bought it, which was the mid 80's. I'm really thinking it would be a shame to remove them, they really are a part of the history of this car.....besides, the ST was one of the best looking Porsches in my opinion.

There is absolutely NO reason to take them off.

I'd don't know that I would leave the flares on, but it is your car, they do look pretty cool when the car is fully done like a period race car.

BTW, where did you find the car? It reminds me of a 67S I went to look at out in the "Valley" (thousand oaks??) quite a few years ago.

Ok guys, some great news...I was able to track down David Kesselman, the original owner of this 911S! This is turning out to be a really cool find, even better than I originally thought. I searched on yellowpages.com and found 15 names, I called the only one in CA and it happened to be the guy!!! He's still into Porsches and just bought a 997 Turbo S, pretty cool. This car has been in Northern CA it's entire life. He owned it until about 1974, unfortunately he did not install the flares so they were put on between 1974 and 1985ish.

He ordered the car for racing and some street use so it still had a full interior and no roll bar or cage. He raced in the SCCA and was also a tire tester for Firestone. For some reason he got stuck with Bahama Yellow (confirmed as the original color based on the dash) which he hated, something about being the last car of the model year? It's very close to #306614S, the blackhawk car mentioned earlier in this thread which is a 1966 911S.

It also happens to be the same color, did they paint them in batches back then? I'm sure my car was built in 1966, I wonder if it's also a 1966 model year?

At any rate, he stripped it down to bare metal and repainted it silver the day he got it! Wait it gets better, he then pulled the motor and had it blueprinted, balanced and changed the bore size! On a brand new 911S! I love this guy! He said he also thinks that he upgraded the cams but can't remember what type. I really hope this is the original motor. He also told me that he installed 906/Carrera 6 manifolds and carbs, unfortunately these are long gone. Also, he said since he was racing it that he ordered it with an aluminum hood and deck lid, which are also long gone. Anyone have an aluminum hood and deck lid laying around?

This S is really turning out to have an interesting history. Sure it's no factory race car but I still think it's a really special car. We'll see when the COA shows up I guess, I really hope the engine matches and the aluminum hood and lid options are there. Hmmm what's the going rate on Carrera 6 carbs and manifolds these days? I guess I have plenty of time to search for parts and daydream about all of my options, this is really almost as fun as driving the cars for me.....almost.

David still remembers how fun this car was to drive and really regrets selling it. I hope to be able to offer him a drive once again. He's going to try to find some old pictures of the car for me, that would be really cool. I'll keep you guys posted

BTW, I know these parts are nearly impossible to find and cost a fortune if you do....It's hard to type sarcasm!

Oh, I almost forgot. I bought the car from a 32 year old guy that recieved it as a gift from his father when he was 15 (1994). His father owned it for 5-10 yrs. I spoke to his father today and he was able to give me some good info. When he bought the car (1985?) it already had the flares and it was painted black. He is responsible for the nice 80's touches like the Recaro seats, ultra wide BBS wheels (which stuck out past the fenders!), chunky aftermarket fiberglass bumpers (not mounted anymore) etc. I asked him what wheels were on the car when he got it and he said 8" and 9" fuchs, bummer.....he has no idea what happened to them. So I'm missing about 10 yrs of the cars history. Not bad for just a few days.

Looks like folks were into "updating" even back then, with the fenders being '69-73 and the outside mirror being 72/73. No worries, though. Fantastic find.

If the car was really SCCA raced (not just autocrossed or timetrialed at DE events) there would have been an SCCA log book. Every car that raced in SCCA had to pass an initial tech inspection and was issued an SCCA log book. Then, at each race the place and date of the race were noted on a new page in the log book. If the car was sold to another racer the log book would go with the car. But if the car was not sold as a racer the log book may have stayed with the original owner. Check with the original owner who told you he "raced" the car. If so he might still have the SCCA log book and also some printed race results. (I still have my old SCCA log book and race results sheets from a car I raced many years ago and later sold.) If you can get a log book and some race results for the car it would be very cool. I believe the prototype 911R's raced at 1967 & 1968 Marathon de la Route had alloy front bonnets. Along with front wings and apron. I would assume rear decklid . And I do not know about door skins ?

But I think these were special pieces crafted for these cars only (front alloy bodywork pieces). I had never heard of them being available for purchase. But who knows... nothing is for certain unless you were there.

One of the four R prototypes was bodied in aluminum, (R3) 307 671, the other three were fiberglass. Interestingly, the aluminum fender looked just like the standard steel one, not the characteristic "R" style.

I know of one SWB aluminum hood for sure and possibly two. In 74 I had a LWB aluminum front bumper that was NOS from the race dept. I'm pretty sure there were other parts made for privateers. Somewhere there is a part number list. Along with the small rear flairs etc...I gave all my books away in 79 when I thought there would never be a use for them..

Harvey- are you saying that you know of an aluminum hood now? Or you remember 1 or 2 from back in the day?

I know of at least one hood that is currently on a car. I'll ask permission from the owner to see it I can share. I typed it in wrong, the bumper that I had was a LWB. Sorry for the confusion.
The hood that I know of now is on a 68, but there is no evidence when it was put on.

Brian, You are probably right. The aluminum parts are mostly LWB ST parts. Installed on SWB cars when updated.

Interesting, I have only ever heard of the aluminum hood on the prototype 911R. I guess I'll see what the COA says, 1967 was a long time ago, David could be mistaken.

I decided to poke around the car today to figure out a bit more of it's history. As mentioned earlier the original owner painted the car silver because he didn't like the factory Bahama Yellow. Also the guy that owned it since the mid 80's told me the car was black when he bought it. I've been able to confirm this by sanding the paint down at various spots on the car, you can clearly see the transition from Bahama Yellow/Silver/Black. Except for the passenger fender, hood and deck lid.

The Hood and deck lid are just black over grey primer, even the underside. So these parts are most likely not original to the car (obviously the deck lid is not a SWB part), of course that doesn't mean the originals were aluminum.....we'll see.

Some of you may have noticed that the passenger fender is from a LWB car. The guy that owned it in the 80's bought it this way and told me that he just drove it without a passenger side turn signal (both SWB turn signals & horn grills came with the car though). It looks like the original pass. fender was damaged and someone cut the ST flare off and reinstalled it onto the LWB fender. I can see some damage to the flare from the back side but it doesn't look too bad. Thank god they didn't just use a 930 flare and extend it!

Here are a few more detailed shots of the drivers side front fender/flare. Notice there is no evidence of a flare extension at the front which would indicate a 930 flare. Given the age of these parts I'm fairly certain that they are genuine ST/RSR flares. If any local experts would like to see the car feel free to pm me.

A few of us went out to give the '67 a once over today after spending our Fathers Day @ EuroSunday & the Blackhawk Museum. Man... such a great find. This is going to be such a great resto project. Cool car and in surprisingly great shape all things considered.

I sure would be tempted to keep it as a period Hot rod myself, I think it would look fantastic in the Bahama yellow. Congrats and have fun.

Unsolicited opinion warning! :D

First of all, yes this is a really cool find!

I love ST bodied cars as well, but you have two problems with that approach.
1) Porsche never used ST flares on a SWB car
2) Those are not ST flares (at least from what I can tell). They appear to be RSR flares.

So, if you spend all that time and money restoring the car it wont really be "right" even as a Hot Rod. With that said, this is your car and you need to do it in the way that makes you the most happy. However, if you ever decide to sell it, the flares will impact the value of the car.

Just look at my car and you will see that I am no purist and have absolutely no problem hot rodding an early "S", but I do think modifications should be somewhat period correct and as the factory would have done.

If it were my car, I would be struggling whether to go back to Bahama Yellow or the Silver that was applied soon after. :D

I agree with you regarding flares on a SWB. I would never install flares on this car but since they've been there so long and are factory parts, it's hard to justify removing them just because it's "not correct". One thing I have been thinking about is leaving the rears and removing just the fronts, sort of like a SWB 911 T/R. One thing I'm not doing is building an S/T or T/R replica/Tribute car (not that there's anything wrong with that). I want to build a sports purpose 911S with period correct parts. Although these flares were not available in 1966 when the car was built, plenty of 911's were upgraded as parts became available.

It's hard to tell in the pictures but I don't think the rear flares as wide as RSR flares. I'll post some pictures with a tape measure for you guys to evaluate.

I thought about painting the car silver but I don't really see the point. If I find a bunch of period racing pictures and the original log book than I would seriously think about it. At this point the PO can't find any pictures or the log book. He can't even remember what number the car was or where/when he raced it exactly. Kind of makes me doubt the whole aluminum hood and deck lid story too.

Another SWB 911 comes to mind after reading your description of the 'look' you invision. This is a '68 T/R that had rear S/T flairs added just a few years after delivery. Great looking car IMHO. Interestingly it is now owned by one of the members here.:)

If I'm not mistaken, the 902 trans was a 4-speed. Correct? Not sure what the /03 type is.

The COA is notorious for having typos and translation errors. I suggest you crawl under
the car and see what is on your transaxle. 901/02 was standard for 911S and a 901/03 is AFMSZ,
same ratios as 901/02.

Well, there you go. Another example of the "crack" COA department in action. Try contacting Kristen @ Porsche and have her review the data again and re-issue a correct COA if she can verify the trans type was wrong.

Thought I would update this thread. Not much progress so far but that should change in the next few weeks.

I sold the front flares and have decided to keep the rears and roll/stretch a set of SWB fenders. Going for a sports purpose T/R style 911S. Maybe it should be called an S/R? Haha...anyways, I've always loved the HART SKI T/R and this car will be built along those lines.

I decided to save the drivers side fender since it's original to the car (616S stamped in bucket) and fits perfectly. I'll weld in a SWB wheel opening from a donor fender. Also, I picked up a SWB passenger fender from EASY which will replace the LWB fender that was on the car.

Finally dropped the engine and trans. Just got my engine yoke in the mail so I should have the engine on the stand this week.

I started collecting some parts also but I need to be careful, don't want to blow the paint & body money!

-Factory aluminum deck lid
-Rep. Cibies and covers
-Rep. Early R seat shell
-12 point cap & rotor adapter for 930 distributor

That's about it so far.

More good news!

I removed the Weber 40IDA's that are currently on the car in order to take pics and list them for sale. The plan was to go back to 40IDS's, well that's not going to happen now! As stated earlier in this thread, the original owner told me that he built up the engine for racing and was running 906 46IDA's...that sounded interesting but I just took the info with a grain of salt. Guess what I found after I pulled the carbs.....46mm ports on the intake manifold! These are not 906/911R manifolds. They are the stock 911S mag. manifolds that have been opened up. Also, the lower port is opened up to 38mm as well as the head. I believe the stock 2.0 911S intake ports on the head are 36mm correct? Very cool! I can't wait to crack open the case and see what else is going on, should be very interesting. Pics to follow.

I had been contemplating running 46's anyways, despite what some people have told me about running 46IDA's an a 2.0L street car. Now there is no question, 46's it is! Besides, I'm already going against the grain by leaving the ST rear flares etc. Some people might not get it but those who do will hopefully be as excited about the finished product as I am.

Bob Marx and I drove up to Oroville on Wednesday to drop my wheels off at Harvey's. His shop is so cool! We had a good time talking with Harvey and checking out the shop. I brought my 2 deep 6's and 2 flat 6's to be converted into Weidman 7R wheels and was pleasantly surprised to find out that one of my deep 6's was in fact a factory 6R wheel (911R front wheel)! I had a hunch it was a 6R because of the ink stamped numbers but it was still a nice surprise when Harvey confirmed it. Harvey has a customer for the 6R so I'm on the hunt for another deep 6 to cut up. I'll run the 7R wheels up front and I just bought a pair of 15x9 minilites for the rear. That's about it for now. Here are a couple pics of the 6R wheel.

You have already accumulated some really neat parts for sure. Maybe you should think about bumping the compression a little to take advantage of all the air flow you are going to have. Looking forward to seeing this car develop.

Hey Gib, yeah I plan to bump up the compression a bit. Who knows, the way this project has been going (fingers crossed) the engine may be hidding some cool bits. The original owner tore the engine down as soon as he took delivery of the car. I would be surprised if all he did was open up the ports in the heads. Stay tuned!

No question, it will go back to Bahama Yellow.....and probably a stripe or two plus some Porsche script for good measure ;)

So I've been having a hell of a time deciding on an accent color for Bahama Yellow. I want to do some sort of stripe on the deck lid and hood. I've seen signal yellow, tangerine, black etc. Those colors really work well but I want to do something a bit different. I started to think about the grey/silver that the original owner had told me about. The only spot on the car that still has that color is on the rear latch panel, the factory Bahama Yellow is also still in that area. I started wet sanding and also hit it with some compound. The color is more of a metalic gunmetal....this could work. I also think it will be a good way to tie in a big part of the history of this car.

My Minilites showed up from the UK yesterday. I had to test fit them as soon as I got home! I've been busy collecting more parts also. I was super excited to find this washer fluid reservoir in a box of parts that came with the car! No idea if these are hard to find but at least it's one thing I won't have to hunt for...this will be used as an oil catch can, old school rally style!

I may refinish the wheels in a darker grey with less gloss to look like vintage Minilites. The profile and offset are right on though. Here is a pic of the 15x8's on the Hart Ski car. Also a shot of the catch can on the same car.

I have this silver 911L as my screen saver right now. I really like the look of this car. I think this is Irish Green? I'm building this car based on some of the period factory and Hot Rod parts that are already there....flares, Racemark wheel, modified engine & exhaust etc. But I'm also very inspired by a handfull of really cool early SWB cars. This 911L and the Hart Ski T/R are at the top of that list. For me these are the coolest 911s, the early sports purpose Hot Rods!

Does anybody know where to found this "windshield" bottle which is so hard to get!!!! I need it to make the oil receiver on my 911R Clone. I got one from our "French" supplier ROSEPASSION.FR but it is larger and doesn't fit correctly.

I originally found and restored the silver car. Yes that was Irish Green that I used. BTW the catch can should be mounted with a 356 fuse panel strap not bolts through the eyelets of the tank.

Great job on that car Rennman, you nailed it!

Unfortunately, it looks like Canepa has ditched the stripes, cibies & vintage seats. He used to have the car listed as you built it, now it's listed under "just arrived". I think he's trying to make it appeal to a wider audience but it just looks too watered down to me now. Still a very nice car though and I would bet money that he saved the original hood/cibies and just painted a donor hood.

I finally found the time to tear into the engine and organize the garage a bit. I built a really sturdy work bench out of some stuff that I had laying around, can't afford to spend money on silly things like work benches! I also set up a nice shelf to organize all of the engine parts.

So far I have pulled the heads and cylinders. I knew that there was going to be some water damage and although it looks like I could reuse most of the parts I have decided to box up the heads and P&C's. I got a really good deal on a set of 2.2S pistons and have decided to build a high compression, twin plug 2.4S engine. The great thing about this setup is that I don't have to modify the case or drill my original heads for the twin plugs(which I was going to run anyways). Also, this is a relatively inexpensive upgrade using all factory parts...2.2T heads and 2.7 cranks are dirt cheap.

And now, more cool parts.....I found some NOS 911R intake manifolds! These were at the top of my wish list but I really didn't think I would be able to find them, let alone afford them. They just came in the mail today, I almost want to sleep with them under my pillow! My 2.2S pistons showed up today also. Maybe it's just me but getting parts in the mail is almost my favorite part of the process.

Wow Craig. Those manifolds are a thing of beauty! Good job on those pistons too. I was tempted to pick those up myself. Great deal. Can't wait to see this beast fire up.

100% agree. I find that locating parts and then seeing them waiting for you on the porch when you get home from work to be the highlight of the day. I usually fist pump in the driveway. My neighbors must think I'm crazy!

Hey guys, I've been busy accumulating parts and working on the engine over the past few weeks. I split the case a couple weeks ago and everything looks good. I have some 2.2T heads on the way and then it will be off to German Precision for machine work.

I just received my twin plug distributor from Aaron at Rennwerks, what a work of art! I also got a set of webers and some 911R rain shields and vent screens. I had to mock them up on my 911R manifolds as soon as I got home.

Recently, I found another SWB project car and was pleasantly surprised to find that one of the front wheels is a 7R wheel! I really can't believe my luck! Now if I could just find an old rusty heap with a 100L tank I'll be all set....haha. I'll be selling off my set of deep and flat 6 fuchs and looking for another 7R wheel. If anyone has a single 7R wheel for sale let me know.

I've had a couple poeple ask about the SWB project that I picked up. Don't want to sidetrack this thread but here is a pic. 1968 non-sunroof coupe with factory ST flares! I guess these SWB's with ST flares grow on trees around here...hahaha.

Hey guys, reached a big milestone today. I've been spending the last couple weekends tearing the car down, there isn't one single bolt left on this thing! Freddie picked it up today. It's off to get blasted and then he will start to work his magic. Here are a couple shots from today, who's that guy behind the "wheel"?

How funny Craig, this picture took me back to when I was a child imagining that I was racing in a Porsche. I would set in my father's old truck and day dream about me going through all the gears passing all sorts of car. Here I'am now after many years doing the same exact thing. The mind, an amazing piece of work.

Not much progress on the car but I did get another package in the mail today. Restored Repa Harnesses!

The car needs a full restoration but it's all there and looks to be numbers matching (engine number is in range). I'll know for sure when I get the COA. Those Seats are great looking. gonna keep them?

Those are very cool seats...but obviously not right for an early 911. I sold them about 6 months ago. They were in perfect condition, never used. Got a few bucks for them ;)

I finally found the perfect seats for this project. This is one of those big purchases that I have been dreading, both financially and emotionally (mostly financially!). I wanted to make sure to get it right the first time. Bob Tilton turned me on to this pair of seats that I purchased from Michael/Vintage Seats. Thanks guys! And before the seat police chime in...yes I know 67's did not have headrests but I refuse to drive a car without them. The passenger sport seat is a factory Racaro with original upholstery. Unbelievable condition and I love the cord & perf. The Drivers side R seat was custom made by Vintage Seats. Michael used a special order corduroy that matches the sport seat, he also had each perforation opened up slightly to match the old material found on the sport seat. I am beyond happy with the results! Now I just need to "age" the R seat a bit and order a matching headrest.

I promise, this collection of parts will actually become a car at some point....

Those seat belts look like the ones Bill Rich does at vintageseatbelts.com.....he's located in BC, Canada. He also sells them on eBay.

Funny you should mention headrests... seats are actually safer with them. Without a headrest adjusted so it cushions the back of your head you can get a hangmans fracture in an accident.
