There are too many to choose. A few of my favorite albums are Paranoid (Black Sabbath), Piece of Mind (Iron Maiden), Fly by Night (Rush), and Abraxas (Santana). Pretty much anything Led Zeppelin deserves to be cranked in the car. For cruising I like the song "Hey Fredrick" by Jefferson Airplane, or Pnk Floyd's Live at Pompeii stuff. Or David Gilmour Live in Gdansk- the Comfortably Numb at the end is the best ever.
Actually, the best driving song is "Jessica" by the Allman Brothers Band. Made famous as the Top Gear theme song.
"Riders on the Storm" off of the L.A. Woman album by the Doors.
Any early Boston...
Fast Cars- TRACY CHAPMAN ; Little Red Corvette-PRINCE ;)
Red Red Wine-UB40 ; Hey Porsche- NELLY( this isn't for everyone)
Spectral Mornings by Steve Hackett...
For real driving long into the night: Radar Love by Golden Earring.
Radar Love is fantastic... Here are a few more I love:
The Song Remains the Same (the song), Zeppelin
Train I Ride, Elvis Presley
Hot Rod Lincoln, Commander Cody
Sing! Sing! Sing!, performed by Benny Goodman *(written by Mr. Prima)
Boddisatva, Steely Dan
Runnin' With the Devil, Van Halen
Dr. Feelgood, Mötley Crue
Speedway at Nazareth, Mark Knopfler
Built for Speed, The Stray Cats
Her are some great driving albums:
American Idiot, Green Day
Discipline, King Crimson
The Catherine Wheel, David Byrne & Brian Eno
Animals, Pink Floyd
Badmotorfinger, Soundgarden
Remain in Light, Talking Heads
Led Zeppelin Four
Of course, there is a right time and place for each of these... but when you get it right, it's magic.
Behind the Wheel - Depeche Mode (typical Depeche Mode)
Route 66 - Depeche Mode (Depeche Mode covering a classic)
Warm Leatherette - Duran Duran (Duran Duran covering a classic electronic hit about a car crash from the 1970's)
Wave - David Sylvian (just because it is such a nice long song)
Of course DM and DD made better songs, but these are On Topic...
I have to add another:
Pink Floyd's Terminal Frost.... A great instrumental to put on in the fall, as the sun is setting, the leaves are blowing. Open the windows, turn on the heat and crank this.
It's not a throbbing, pulsing song that you'd take a spirited drive to. It's a laid back cruising song.
Night Drive...Garnet Rodgers
Jethro Tull Most any, but. Aqua Lung
Radar Love
Life is a Highway
Inna Goda Davida
I agree with the others on Pink Floyd, Comfortably Numb... the guitar solo near the end is just phenomenal. Irony is that I almost NEVER listen to Pink Floyd these days, but just like many of the other songs mentioned here - it has a place (at least for me)... expeditious night time driving, cool temps, windows down, and wide open space outside the car. Sitting in traffic around the corner from home, in the heat, windows rolled up, AC going, etc. doesn't add up for the experience. Can't wait for winter here.
I almost forgot...
Sniff 'N' The Tears - Driver's Seat
Crank - Catherine Wheel (our own Rob Dickenson's band....)
A Hard Rain's Gonna - Fall Bryan Ferry
Dangerous Type - The Cars
Age of Consent - New Order
All my Friends - LCD Soundsystem
Heliocopter - Bloc Party
LIghts and Music - Cut COpy
Just wanting to bring this thread into the 2000's.....
stratocasters, deep forest, santana, redhot chili peppers, lots more
Here's what I've been shuffling for the last 6 months. It's amazing how pleasant it can be to pop in some ear plugs and cruise to the racetrack with these songs shuffling around in my head. Some make the right foot heavy and some take the weight off, but they all blend nicely to make the trip more fun.
Timestretch - Bassnectar
How Soon is Now? - Smiths
Black Velvet - Alannah Myles
I'm The One - Van Halen (the entire 1984 album is also a great driving companion)
In The Meantime - Spacehog
Got Me Under Pressure - ZZ Top
Backwater - Meat Puppets
Walk Away - Joe Walsh
The Valley Road - Bruce Hornsby and the Range
The Show Goes On - Bruce Hornsby and the Range
Radioactive - Imagine Dragons
Novocaine for the Soul - The Eels
Shimmer - Fuel
Switchblade 327 - Brian Setzer Orchestra
Somebody's Baby - Jackson Browne
Lot's of Rock and Roll listed with some great tunes and artists! YELLO - The RACE

Hummm....No opera fans here?
Well I like Wagner, but without vocals. Though it is not opera, I like Beethoven as well.
Another good band to check out if you like bluesy rock is Hot Tuna. Jack Cassidy and Jorma Kaukonen (bassist and guitarist, respectively) from Jefferson Airplane. They do mixes of electric and acoustic and cover blues as well as something I am not sure what to call- it is kind of bluegrass maybe?

Whatever it is, keep that heart rate going :)
The best sound in my cars? The engine (motor) sound!!
I'm a music nut, but the main driving stuff I always have on me :
Hendrix BBC sessions, Rammstein, Social D, Motley Crue, Megaherz, Blackalicious, Pantera, Clash, Danger Doom, Tool, Joe Satriani ( particularly his early stuff ), Dvorak for those fall days winding through the Blue Ridge mountains :)
Tom Waits, going out west.
If you don´t like this, please keep quiet. It means you are getting old :p:D
Never mind the lyrics, nobody over here understands a word.. :-)

OK Max, so you are into the real hardcore stuff? That´s cool, but keep in mind we invented this devil music. The Swedes might look and sound cool, but the guys over here kill each other and burn churches ;)
Thanks Scott! I thought youtube worked everywhere!
Cheers!
Radmund
Completely different music, but an artist that deserves more fame. I LOVE THIS!! :)
"Copperhead road" in case the link doesn´t work...

I'd be pillaging too if we had winters in Cali like you do in Scandinavia!
Actually, the thing I like best about Opeth is that they aren't hard core all the time. They switch it up from mellow and clean, even piano, to death growls, double-pumping and guitar riffs. I like Damnation as much as Orchid and Blackwater Park (if you know their albums).
@ mrar
Tom Waits, yes, you're right...
Never get tired of this one…...
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/RSht5j3Cnh0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
I have hours of music by the Doors on the ipod in the car and don't think you go past that, especially the live recordings and in particular this one
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kE32pvvaDT8
The downside is that my speed always seems to creep up when it is playing......... but there again "the future is always uncertain and the end is always near" :)
Apart from the Doors the "car Ipod" has The Clash, Hendrix, The Stones, Joplin, Led Zeppelin, hours of Cold Chisel, Lou Reed, The Velvets, Patti Smith, the Who, and, more for cruising or city traffic, The Band, Etta James, Clapton, Cream, Bob Marley, Springsteen's Nebraska and the live sets, and lots of John Lee Hooker.
Come to think about it almost all of it was around when the car was new:)
Rock Island Line- Johnny Cash
Finally, someone mentioned the best tune ever. It is true that it makes you have a lead foot.
OK. I'll play.

You Tube- Got to Love it :)
Many of the songs suggested are not period-correct. I just hope you are ripping them onto an 8-track...
Pick any Beach Boys tune that mentions waves, cars, or motorcycles.
Do yourself a favor and find some open road like say the Beartooth Highway or high desert Hwy 80 between Wells and Winnemucca and pop this in the player. Maserati "Abracadabracab". I like space guitar.
I've gotten 2 speeding tickets listening to this song. no joke.

BEST SONG?
EASY WINNER!!!
The song of any V12 Ferrari is amazing but the definite winner is...
My 427 COBRA (CSX 3127) SIDE BY SIDE RACING A FERRARI 365GTB4 DAYTONA at 175MPH.
This happened in 1987 at 7AM on the newly opened SEMI VALLEY FRWY ... At the time there was a mini "Cannon Ball Run" called the "Solvang Stomp"
The insane ROAR of an uncorked American 427CI V8 racing against a 4 CAM FERRARI V12 at 7,000 RPM on a Public Road is a "SONG" that unfortunately has been forever lost to the ages......

Like this one . . .
In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida . . .
. . . Iron Butterfly
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCkHanF4v1w
I was 10 when I first heard this. Goof-ball Oakie Viet Nam Vet played it, on his record player, out in a courtyard, in the apartment complex where we lived. We were all sitting around on these concrete steps --- him, one of his buddies, somebody's girlfriend, and me . . . when he pulls out this record that he's just bought, goes into his place, fires it up, leaves the door open . . . .
Dah-daah-DA-duh-daah-daaah-daaah-daaah . . . .
I stopped listening to The Beatles, after that
Hard to listen to, impossible to forget. When as the last time anyone openly experimented with music, like this? Before there was Metal . . . there was Acid. 17-some minutes long, with this funky/tribal-sounding multi-minute drum solo in it --- first I'd ever heard. Lousy vocals + lyrics, too --- the title is a drug-slurred version of 'in the garden of Eden' . . . . and the whole track was just a sound-check when it was recorded
Never --- and I mean NEVER . . . . plays on the radio. But it's never left my head
Last time I heard it commercially was when Michael Mann (producer of 'Miami Vice' --- and who has a remarkably disturbing knack for choreographing violence to music) used it in a movie called Man Hunter
The song is just a song. What's missing --- is the context . . . which I think is kinda what MountainRoads is referring to
The way to listen to this song? . . .
. . . play some Beach Boys, some Jackson 5 --- or a little Beatles . . .
. . . then . . . .
Yes indeed: "In-A Gadda" is a great *cruising* song. I spent a lot of time cleaning floors and equipment at a dry cleaner's mid-70's while listening to that song. The fact that it was long was handy.
Here's another I really like when you want additional encouragement to push the go-pedal: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zKAS7XOWaQ
