Once again, awesome photos. Are you the photographer in all the photos you post?
Here are a few from my early days at the track. Not bad for a 9 year old with a cheap kodak.
This is Road Atlanta, and according to the back of the photos, in 1983. Driver- Sarel van der Merwe.
No, I didn't start going to races until 1978 - I missed all the good stuff!
Curt,
Of the 3 black&whites, out of the Keyser book, the second shows most of the Siffert stable of cars for the movie and the three mechanics who maintained them for him. The guy on the right (with the Phil Collins hair) is Hugo Schibler... Schibler wrenched for Siffert through his whole career including the first 917 USA effort with the PA in '69... though the CanAM with the 917 STP car in '71
I saw and talked to Hugo about 3 years ago....
Where ?
Working in the engine room at Kevin Buckler's Racers Group in Sonoma CA.
... and so it goes ;)
Cool pics, Chucks last one is really low in the front...
the last 935.
What an era, for those of you out there that lived it, and had the chance to talked and see these truly race drivers, it makes me keep my porsche,s :) for ever....
great fotos.
Mike,
Low is right!!!
That was taken at Road America '71 ...
I think braking into turn 5 comin down from about 190...
Really great stuff gentlemen... more pics and more stories please.
Thank you;
John
Ted - I see a pattern to your fotos .... ;)
1st foto here is the twin 911-engine Indy car. Last foto is the original 1930's "P-wagen" (Porsche Wagen) - forerunner to the Auto Union race cars - and in my opinion: the great grandfather of all Porsche racing cars.
This is my favorite.
I actually sat in this car at Rennsport II.
What a feeling, I actually got a head rush at that moment!
CanAm races at Donnybrooke:
Viva Milt !
WOW... Curt... very cool Milt
One of my favorite Milts... :)
Chuck - Where is your last photo taken? That is some interesting terrain in the background. A great shot.
WOW!
The pic showing Huschke von Hanstein wearing a dinner jacket in the 550Spyder on the bank is truely spectacular!!! :)
I LOVE THAT ONE!
It looks to me like that shot was taken on an indoor bycicle track, since it looks like the bank curve has wooden flooring...
NICE ANYWAY!
Its a keeper! :)
That pic is in the book "HvH, The Racing Baron" Lots of great old pics in that one - highly recomended in the Chuck Miller bookclub ;)
John
That nose job on the 908 spyder Curt posted is almost an early version of the Lola B2K/10.
Brian,
That's St. Jovite Canada 1971...
Here's Another fav...
Milt do'n what he did best... Sebring 1973
"Milt do'n what he did best... Sebring 1973"
I'd sure like to see some footage just prior to this shot. I was wondering how he got the car in this position. He appears to be turning left with the left rear heavily loaded and the right side in the air? I assume he is trying to correct and bring the right side down, so I guess what I'd really like to see is what happened next! :)
That nose job on the 908 spyder
Tom - I believe that was the 908/3 prototype during initial testing.
Thorsten - I think Huscke was on a wood cycling track in that 550 doing exhibition laps!!
More photos, please.
just guessing...Quote:

With all the lighting hardware on the front I guess he did the same for hours and into the night as well...
and again....something tells me Milt just put it on the Vette and 2 911s. :)
That last one of Milt, DAMN, you can FEEL IT !
John
a couple from TRE Dave, got any more Dave? Curt tease us with a couple more...
For some reason, I think this is one of the coolest Porsches ever ......
Anybody know what this is? The relatively unknown 909 .....
Also known as the Bergspyder ?
Yup, the Bergspyder.
Here's some rally pics (the last one, I actually DID take myself! ;) ):
Story time Curt...
Where? when? Who ?
John
Here're a few 906's .......
Le Mans 73
John - the rally pic was taken in 1981-82 actually. It's the SCCA Press-on-Regardless Rally in the Keweenaw Peninsula, Michigan. At the time, it was a fairly siginificant race although not on the FIA calender. The Audi Quattros ruled back then and John Buffum won the race. There was a Renault R5 Turbo at the race as well. A few more from that race:
Love the published pics, but so much better are those taken by the fans from back in the day.
Imagine what is hidden away in old shoe boxes...
Thanks for those Curt.

Great pictures Curt! It would be nice if you had a web site of your photo collection.
Untill that happens please do continue to post them here.
Your recent photos show some interesting shots of cars I have seen before but from some new angles.
Very nice, thank you. :)
I'm going to have to search my archives and see if I have a photo of the Brumos car you DON'T have, Ted! :D
The evolution of an S - from mild to wild:
A few more photos to add ..... the first one is Vic Elford taking the 'inside' line.
A few more to add ...
Hay inside is right. ;)
Nasty examples of collapsed Aluminum roll cages.
Small photo, but look close. You'll see the 917/30, Donohue and a young AJ Foyt.
Here're a few from Brands Hatch:
One more from Brands 1971 that's a bit unusual. It's called the Dulon-Porsche and obviously has a flat-6 in it.
Some from Laguna Seca. That's Sam Posey talking to Vasek.
An RS leading the way.
That last pic is either badly distorted or that rear wheel is waaaaaay out of camber?
Florio that is.
mostly WERKFOTOs...
cheers
jerry
...and a couple more. i have some Vic Elford stuff from a Swedish rallye that still need to be scanned.
cheers
jerry
Nice stuff! :)
I'll throw in some domestic...
These out of the Porsche Owners Club Newsletter June/July 1974
Time Trial, Slalom, and Gymkhana.... all at the Pomona Fairgrounds
Check out the tails and fenders... ;)
It's a trip - for a guy my age, at least - to see these pictures. Especially the ones that you posted, Chuck; I imagine today's POC meets with all the 996s and I look at those pictures with the long-hoods and it blows my mind. Interesting juxtaposition of memories.
30+ years, guys. My car is a DECADE older than me. It was in 5th grade by the time I was born ... ;)
I really like those local snapshot-type photos Chuck! If you've got more, please post them.
Holy Cow, that's a lot of rear tire on the white car in the first photo!
I've got several hundred vintage Porsche fotos. This first one's got to be near the top of the list!
Some more .........
And some 911's. The first being my idea of perhaps the ultimate 911 .....
What a trip (down memory lane).
Curt, you've got an fantastic collection. I particularly appreciated your CanAm races at Donnybrooke photos. Loved going to that track...still go there when Nord Stern holds their DE events or their Club Race (they now call the track Brainerd International Raceway, but it's always been Donnybrooke to me).
You were at the grid for the start of the race; I was on the backstretch. I have very few of those photos scanned, but here are two more shots of the race, and a third a different type of nostalgia...
Roger - those are great shots. Anything else you're got would be appreciated. BTW, most of "my" photos were not taken by me!
What a collection!!! Superb stuff. Thank you. :D
Great photos, more please.
Caption.
Seeing the 917 leading the pack looks like men against boys.:D
That is a bit odd, huh? It's 1974 at the Nurburgring. So I'm assuming it's an Interserie race. I'm not sure if, like the US CanAm, they put restrictions on the 917/30s and the rules favored smaller normally aspirated cars or what???
1970 I think This is the classic battle as good as it gets
That's a classic - Watkins Glen I think?
And some mystery photos. I posted these a long time ago. Anybody remember the story?

Do you mean the photo trick to make Ferrari think that the 16 was smaller than it actually was?Quote:

A couple of interesting photos. The 1st is the GELOs racing team from 1971. The 2nd is probably a few years earlier. Both illustrating that teams back then didn't necessarily stick to one marque!
I recently viewed a posted photo of an early 911 with all 4 wheels in the air, but cannot find the thread or photo now? Any help? Thanks.
Hey Scott - period jumpers are really hard to come by. There are quite a few of the current vintage rally early 911s. These are probably the only 2 period 911's I've got:
WOOOOHOOO! Nice! Thanks Curt! I guess the photo I most recently viewed was rather current rally photo. It seems it was connected with one of the recent RGruppe Sonoma threads. ????
I just don't recall it? Of course, I'm getting old and my brain is turning to mush too ... is it this one?
Here's another.

Here are some photos of Alan Johnson taken a long time ago. He bought this IROC Porsche from Mark Donohue.
That is Alan standing there in the striped shirt at Riverside Raceway with his wife at the time Diana in the car. She would later (at another event) back that car into some barrels at Holtville, Alan was not amused about it!!!!!
Excellent Frank! Thank you.
Turbo3six AKA SCOTT, how are you doing? I believe the picture of the car you are talking about is in the general section and it's thread is titled" MFI pumps rebuilts... who but Gus?". Hope this helps. JIM:cool:
Here's a few from Le Mans...

Ya gotta love the way they just set those things up on jackstands in the mud - to think they're worth millions $$$ today.
A few more. The 1st one is a rare racing Targa (at the Targa Florio).
Just random stuff ...
YOU KICK ASS CURT !!!!!!!!!!!...:D
I'm loving the Donahue/917-30 photos. Absolute GOLD! :D
I know these are not old shots, but Curts pics of the 908s made me think of posting this 908 and 907 taken at VIR this past weekend.
The 908/03 is one of the best. Here's a few shots from Brands Hatch, including an '03' (maybe the same car?):
Ernie - a good 910 interior reference shot here ...
More from LeMans, Hockenheim and one of a 907 in traffic at the Targa.
I've been doing a lot of foto research for an upcoming project. These 1st few are obviously 1:43 models but they show the colors of cars which are normally only seen in old black & white fotos:

FANTASTIC STUFF! Please keep it coming!!
PS I sent you a PM full of questions
Some of you might recognize the red & white Marlboro livery on a few of those Tour de Corse (a tarmac rally) photos. That race in 1972 was the competition debut of the 1973 Carrera RSR. They ran 2 cars - one for Waldegaard and one for Larousse. Neither finished. There're not many phtoos of these cars. The cars were converted to test cars for the winter of 72/73. You've probably seen the so-called RSR test car with the red & white horizontal stripes on the side and the all-white doors.
Tonight's dosage of vintage 911 racing action from LeMans:
Take a look at the first photo ... is there a sexier car than the 906? Ever? :D
YOU'RE KILL'N ME Egerer damn it !!!! ...... :p
The 1965 Marathon de la Route -
Misc stuff from who knows where - 1st one's a nice 911R with "Magic Fix" livery??
Curt asked
"Take a look at the first photo ... is there a sexier car than the 906? Ever?"
My answer is YES
how about a 906LH with that extra long tail and the little wing flaps at the end OR a 907 / 908 LH?
Curt
do you have any good 906LH pics?
I do at home somewhere - (from 66 le mans i think). will post them if I can find them tonight
Hugh, I've even got the uber-rare 906LH 6-wheeler ;)
... I'm gon'a have to start go'n long for some of this stuff.... :o :p

I thought I was a reasonable student of Porsche racing history, and certainly one of obscure cars, but I have never heard of a 906LH 6 wheeler, let alone seen a photo:o
Can you provide more details? Obviously I have had a deficient education.
No worries! You studied well. That photo had a little help from Photoshop!
I KNEW IT !!!!!! ......... You grab his legs Hugh ... ;) :D
Curt
I suspected so as well:)
Do you mind if I steal it to use as an avatar?
It is a great job:cool:
However, as I have no doubt you are well aware, there are stranger things around.......... like the Tyrell P34 F1 car from the mid 70's.
I've always liked this one ....

This out of 'The world of Racing Cars' by Dymock
Wow...that's what I'm talkin bout Chuck. TY for the shot. If'n, uh, a couple more from that book fell out nobody would complain. :D
Some photos I took myself ...
Thanks Curt for all the great shots. I've been rotating a few as wallpapers.:)
Chuck- Awesome shots at Monza, especially the one with 917s after going under the old banking. Must have been a great site for those spectators.
Hugh- Williams also tried, but never raced, the six-wheeler idea but in the configuration of Curts 906. Four front sized tires on the rear for better aerodynamics without loss of contact patch.
Frank - I'm not sure .... is this your car? I THINK this is the ex-Zasada car. Zasada ran the 911 in the 1974 Press-on-Regardless rally here in Michigan - the rally was in the FIA World Rally Championship that year along with Monte-Carlo, the Tour de Corse, Safari, etc.!! I think the 1st photo is Zasada driving in the 74 or 75 POR (he won the rally in 1975 in the 911) and the others are Buffum in maybe 76/77/78??.
curt, looks like my car buffum did put a duck tail on it;buffum's rally team was libra racing
It was many years ago...but this is a picture of my '73S at work...in the rain at Sears Point...It ran great and never missed a beat...

Curt, I'm sure everyone here knows this already but since I don't I'm going to ask.
What did you do that you have all of these photos? Were/are you a professional shutterbug?
I really appreciate these pictures, and since I am going to be saving them to my hard drive I want to know where they came from.
I just find most of them on the internet. Very few are actually mine.
Curt,
The young guy that shows up in at least 4 of your pictures working for Vasek is Alwin Springer, who went on to start Andial, then on to head Porsche Motor Sports US, and now retired....
... then and now
Cheers, and GREAT pics
One more from MidOhio - the official Penske/Redman pit wagon. The other is Mosport 1973. The 911 is Sebring 1973 and one I don't recall seeing before - check out the alum Torq-Thrusts (one usually see the magnesiums on race cars). The last 911 is Spa 1969.
Kurt,
The red 43 car looks to be one of the Kremer brothers.
The size of his roll bar tubing looks a bit skinny ! ;)
It's also a while since a race 911 had rear seat backs,as well !
This looks like a 24 hour race car to me.
Cheers,
Dennis.:)

A little selection of pictures taken out of

He was Porsche Werks photo chronicler...
(Sorry for the poor quality, but my scanner broke down...)
1956:
v. Frankenberg´s 550 Spider RS 1500 went over the high speed curve at the Avus, he was pulled out of the car (second picture) into a tree during his "air trip", his car crashed in the paddock where it burned out. Everbody tried to extinguish the fire, thinking v. Frankenberg is still in the car.
He was lucky and survived....
some more pictures...

Some time ago, somebody somewhere posted a picture or pictures of 917s lined up in Porsche's courtyard for Paul Frere and the FIA to inspect for homologation. I need that picture(s) for an article in preparation. Any and all help to the picture or links to the pictures would be greatly appreciated
Some early 911 Turbo test mules from 1973. Note the longhood version in the lower righthand corner.

Zeltweg 1968 I believe. 910s and 908s.

great great pics !
It's Gerard Larrousse night! That means lots of 911R photos. ;)
Most photos you can right click and read the file name for a description of where/when.
You can see Elford hanging out in some of these too.
Just a few more of Larrousse:
A little off-topic here but here is evidence that the "S" spoiler existed before 1972. Jashford's 1971 911-S was picked up at the factory by the first owner and equipped with some really interesting pieces. The front spoiler is one of them. The car came with 2 sets of driving lights. The spoiler was designed for the second set of lights to fit into the cut outs not unlike the standard valence. It's always been that way.
The Larrousse car has a "glass" spoiler. John's is metal and anyone who has seen it will acknowledge that it wasn't done in somebody's back yard. There is entirely too much care and craftsmanship for that to have happened.
The first owner who is an attorney (and who raced at Sebring and other places) ordered the car the way he wanted and we all know that Porsche would do just about anything to make a customer happy. (Ask Jerry Seinfeld)
Thanks, Curt for the image.
Here's John's spoiler again for anyone interested.
Best,
Tom

OK, great photos but here's one story to go along with some of these shots.
I'll get some of my photos posted later.
At the last Historics I noticed George Follmer sitting at a table signing autographs and obviously, not having a great time. I decided to sit next to him just to catch up and say hi. It quickly became obvious that he did not want to sign autographs nearly as much as he wanted to talk so we covered most of his racing career over th next 30 minutes or so. One great story came up. In 1978 he and Peter Gregg (among others of course) ordered and picke-up their new 935's. They raced at Riverside and George managed to beat Peter and win the race. He received a nice congratulatory note from Peter shortly thereafter, George thought all was well.
The next race was at Road Atlanta. George was leading again but noticed Peter getting closer and closer in his rear view mirrors. Suddenly, Peter punted George off the track, George had some minor damage and was never able to keep up after that.
After the race, George went over to Peter's pits and noted something interesting with the front bumper of Peter's 935. It had been heavily reinforced inside, much more than stock, just right for clearing a path in front of him. Obviously, George feels that he knows the reason why the changes were made, who knows for sure but it makes a good story.
Peter was an enigma, up one day and really down the next. Sad ending for sure.

This is the Michael May 550 Spyder. I worked on this car during the 1998 Monterey Historics. The wing is hooked to a hand brake-type lever and moves up and down to vary the downforce for corners and straights. EDIT: Kinda like the Jim Hall Chapparal cars, the competition wasn't very happy with the wing so they petitioned to have the car outlawed. The petition eventually went through and the car was deemed illegal ... May decided that, rather than remove the wing, he would retire the car. And so it was...
http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...1&d=1152733708
I think Frank Gallogly may have owned this car at one time. Al Cadrobbi, my dad and I traveled with this car (as well as 3 other Spyders) to the 1992 Porsche Parade at Laguna Seca. We used a vintage 2 car ramp truck and an open trailer to haul 'em around back then. No longer....
http://www.early911sregistry.org/for...1&d=1157584966
At the 1998 Monterey Historics this car was being stored in a hangar at the airport during the week prior to the Historics weekend. When they went to pull the car out and drive - yes, drive - it over the the track it wouldn't start. Somehow I got enlisted to help the guys caring for the car and we pushed it out on the tarmac and popped the clutch. Needless to say, the tower wasn't very happy.

Looking at these wonderfull pictures got me to dig out some of my old stuff. I am sorry that the quality of taking a digital picture of a slide on the wall is so bad. I need to transfer to digital some other way and then post.
Some more.
Continued.
I will find a better way to transfer to digital and post some more, as these transparencies get older it is a better way to perserve them on digital.
....................
Those are great Bob! Like I mentioned, you might want to take a stack of your slides down to the local 1-hour photo and see if they can transfer them for you.
Thanks Curt, that is exactly what I intend to do. First need to sort out the ones to do. Will post when done. Thanks again.

Hey Bob,
Could you check the dates on those Road Atlanta pics again ...
I know they started racing the G body Porsches towards the end of '73, but I thought the Kweck Capri and the BOBCOR Alfa Montreal started racing in '74...
... but then again, I forgot what I had for lunch today ... :o

................................
Chuck, you could be right, I was there '73, '74, & '75, so they may be mixed together. I developed & mounted my own slides back then so they are not dated. Still looking for more boxes with F5000 and others.
