Fantastic photos on that site. VE tells a funny story about the events before and after that picture of him sitting on the ground with the wine bottle at the TF.
When the car broke he was very well wined and dined by the spectators, and had to wait until the end of the race to hitch a ride back to the hotel. He arrived well fed, with a good buzz, and carrying the part on the 908/3 that had broken (I don't remember what it was). The team was having dinner together at the hotel, when he entered and held up the part Piech asked him if that was what broke, or what was left of the car. :D
In my McQueen/ Le Mans collection I have many contact sheets from shootings during the filming. I've found this one: could it be the ex Milou 911S just sold in Ladenburg? Maybe Thomas has some infos about the original registration plate?

One of my Prized possessions. 1971 Can-Am Race @ Laguna Seca, driving the STP 917 Spyder.
Unfortunately it isn't the one I owned. This is one of several Porsche 911 lent to Solar production by the factory for the movie. They were taken back by the factory in September before the shooting of the movie was over. The one I had was delivered in April 1971, so several months after the movie was made.

Carr great photos, must be 1970? I was at the F1 race with my dad that year, the last time they used the old pit configuration - just before the uphill esses - shown in your photos.
1970, Probably, it was a Test in the Spring with Seppi & Mario. It was so Foggy they they didn't go out much & this 11 year old got to hang out with the Legends as there were 20 People tops at the Track

Nice pic, looks like Sebring.
Affirmative; 1970 -- a year that David Yorke had particular reason to be grim, as Porsche had shipped him a run of defective front hub/uprights that took the Gulf-Porsches out of contention early. Siffert and Redman drove like maniacs -- at one point Redman had the vertical cooling-fan fly off into the parking lot, but he was able to bring the car in before it overheated. Siffert eventually wound up in Rodriguez's car and they managed to finish that car fourth, behind one of Andretti's greatest drives in the Ferrari 512S, the McQueen/Revson 908, and an Alfa 33/3.

Of course; good observation! A Porsche man through-and-through (both you and de Beaufort). The hat should have been the give-away -- de Beaufort was reputed to be quite the European aristocratic eccentric.
Innes Ireland, Richie Ginther, Giancarlo Baghetti, Maurice Trintignant, and Tony Maggs survived that cruel era and passed from causes unrelated to motorsport. Brabham is still with us. Still, the casualty rate in that photo is tragic.

I found these last night
Last year in April a story I did on my friend Charles (Coop) Cooper that ran in Excellence magazine. In it was a photo he shot of Siffert with Liane Engemann. I had initially be unable to identify her but discovered who she was at the 11th hour. I quickly relayed the information to the editor but he didn't receive it in time to make the addition to the story… it ran with the caption; Jo Siffert with friend (unidentified).
I was mortified.
I've been working on a new, soon to be published story and have been working with Michael Keyser who is a very interesting chap and has helped me a lot. I told him what happened with Coops Siffert photo and he showed me his shots…

I hear that they're throwing-in the hammer that Seppi used in his apprentissage de carrosserie during 1956. It's on it's third handle and fourth head after being consumed by fire in 1972 and undergoing a complete rebirth in 1998, but is stated by the consignor to be in a close approximation of its unmistakable original colors.

Brands Hatch, 1968 (there's a photo from another angle of Seppi and Amon passing the same marshal's station on page 150 of Ed Heuvink's book, Jo Siffert: The Swiss Racing Legend). This race is considered Siffert's "finest hour," in which he drove Rob Walker's privately entered Lotus 49B-Ford to beat Chris Amon (trailing in the factory Ferrari) by a mere four seconds after Hill and Oliver's factory Loti retired. Great shot!

Above Ex-Siffert car is Member Milou's Ex-car.
It was originally metallic green with beige interior and was a 71 shell but w 2.4S prototype engine.
Given to Siffert as a gift in 1971, a sister car was given to Rodriguez.
Milou sprayed the car slate grey like Steve MqQueen's 2.2l , not knowing that he had found a Ex Siffert car because that story appeared to him later when the kardex was found. This is most likely the car, see the beige int.

Yes it is the car I sold last May. Don't know if the add mentions the car comes with its original engine and gearbox. I was hoping it went to a collector who would have restored it back to factory specs! I'm sure it will eventually be the case, we shall see!

Interesting thread.
I've started doing some reading about Mr Siffert, who, it seems, was quite the businessman, as well --- owning his own Porsche concession in Switzerland . . . perhaps two. Hope to track down some addresses, but anyway, there was an account that I'd read where he apparently was quite the salesman, too --- engaging + persuasive
In fact, it's his diverse business activities that I find so interesting. Seems that Mr Siffert was a 'workaholic' --- before the term was widely-recognized/used . . . and was involved in a number of marketing businesses, which included bringing Big Time Corporate sponsorship to Formula One --- specifically Heuer and Marlboro. He was also apparently involved with preparing Porsche's 917/10 project for the Can Am
Whatever his accomplishments were in a car . . . I get the feeling he would've done more out

1970 was the worst year for him in F1, he also drove in F2 and was one of the best in endurance and CanAm.
Bad luck with wrong/not really competitive F1 cars/teams.
The sad irony is he died in one of it.
At the end of 1971 he was gone, only 3 months after team collegue Rodriguez died at Norisring too.

Its No Hogwash. His F-1 cars were crap and he had no luck. Check his achievements in F-1 vs sports prototype cars.
By 1968/69 he was a winner with Porsche sports prototypes but Siffert never had a good F-1 team neither a good F-1 car, despite his immense driver talent.
In his last F-1 season of 1971 and after winning finally at Zeltweg, in a french interview he was quoted that he felt confident with his upcoming F-1 car for 1972 and he knew he then could succeed. Two months later he would be dead while driving a F-1 car, that is.

The original shoulder patch is likely to be Hinchman,the UK makers of the suit and the front patch looks like a Gulf one.
Maybe he taped it over for a GP race for BRM - IIRC their oil contract was Shell.
By 1971 you think he could have owned at least 2 suits - one for GP and the other for sports cars ! :D

At one stage Jo was rumoured to be talking to Ferrari for a works contract in F1 and sports cars.
This move was not in Porsche's best interests,so they 'assisted' to place him in a GP team.
Unfortunately for Jo,the best that could be done was the second tier BRM team.
Also remember this was the start of the era when the top drivers drove FI only.
Both he and Pedro showed flashes of their potential but the front line teams of Lotus,Ferrari,Tyrrell and Brabham
ruled the top podium step in Jo's 1970/1971 BRM years.

Whatever his talents, or skills, or charm . . . I can only imagine what people who worked for a living --- or for him . . . would make of McQueen and his behavior. Especially Racers --- like those who drove for the film. Racing is always dangerous --- more so then. Just during the filming, Derek Bell would scorch his face wrecking one of the Ferraris, and David Piper would lose half of a leg crashing his 917. And so, here comes McQueen, through the middle of it all . . .

"I thought he was an excellent example of someone who'd grown up without parents, with no role model to look up to and see how a person is supposed to behave . . .
. . . we'd be in the pits all set up and ready to go, waiting sometimes for him to show up for two hours. When he did, he'd arrive on his Husky doing a wheelie down pit lane, and say, 'So, what are you all waiting for?' It was all very juvenile." (p355)
Derek Bell and Jo Siffert would give McQueen some comeuppance. During the filming of a sequence through the curves up-and-into the Ford chicane, Keyser writes (p323) . . .
". . . after several runs at medium speed, the three set off in close formation at racing speed. Derek was in the lead, then Steve and Jo. As they approached Whitehouse, Jo pulled smack up on Steve's tail and boxed him to where he was almost pushing him through the curve. On reaching the Ford chicane they pulled their cars to a stop and climbed out.
Steve was visibly shaken . . .
'His face was a white as his Nomex mask,' Derek recalls, chuckling . . ."
And so now . . . this picture.
McQueen is clearly not amused --- or in charge. Mr Siffert is --- with McQueen in the audience . . . arms folded, slouching, pouting . . . sunglasses to hide behind
And the young man on the left, smiling slyly --- his arm in a cast? Mario Iscovich, McQueen's personal assistant, working for him since he was 18. Broke his arm when his coked-up Boss crashed the car they were in . . . then let his Mario take the fall. King of Kool, indeed
But the best part of the image, for me, though . . . is Mr Siffert . . .
. . . his hands --- the center of the picture
No clenching or aggression --- no force . . . only a surprising deftness --- not so much a driver . . . more a fisherman casting, or a conductor
And his smile . . .

I think that I saw it that weekend.
Jo Siffert died in his BRM at a non-championship Formula 1 race Brands Hatch on October 24, 1971, after the movie was in theaters. I had already sat through the movie three times before I saw him driving and hanging out in the paddock at the last race that he ever finished, the Monterey-Castrol Grand Prix Can-Am at Laguna Seca, the weekend of October 15-17, 1971. I'll never forget the first time that I saw Le Mans, and I'll never forget seeing Jo Siffert drive a Porsche 917/10...

From the helmet graphic, that's a photo of Bob Bondurant in the FIA Cobra that he shared with Jochen Neerpasch in the 1964 Nurburgring 1000 km. Jo Siffert did not co-drive this car. In both Ed Heuvink's definitive bio Jo Siffert: The Swiss Racing Legend and on RacingSportsCars.com, Siffert is listed as finishing the 1964 1000 km in 8th overall driving the Porsche 904 GTS 2.0 that he shared with car-owner Heinz Schiller. Siffert did drive a Cobra 289 FIA for Shelby later that year, at the Freiburg-Schauinsland hill climb, bearing start-number 67. Not the car in the photo.
Don't believe everything that you see on Wikipedia. Just sayin'...

P.S. I visited the Schlumpf museum back in 1993. It is very cool -- and I hear that it's gotten better under current management. The Schlumpf brothers were the perfect customers for Jo Sifffert -- they compulsively bought every Bugatti that they could lay their grasping hands on, and weren't too picky about what they paid (which eventually caught up with them when they bankrupted their textile business and the employees took their car collection hostage). The cars on display in Mulhouse aren't over-restored, as tends to be the case here in the U.S. of A. I personally hate to see rows of beautiful sports cars that should be out being thrashed in all their hand-built oily glory through the nearby Vosges mountains!

Spectators wanted more, and the following year, Dan Gurney, a talented and cheerful prankster of a driver forever changed the destiny of the famous bubbles. The American, winner for Ford, decided to reproduce the scene from 1966 shaking the bottle that he had been given. The cork exploded out of the bottle and the public rejoiced. Siffert, again winning the Index of Performance with Hans Herrmann in a Porsche 907, is one of the first showered! Thanks to him, a new custom was born . . .'

as we know Seppi was a Gulf contracted driver but here is in a Martini 917
any idea where / how /why ? :confused:

two were the Springbok series and a little before that,the Argentine Temporada series
IIRC David piper was a Springbok series supporter in both Porsches and Ferraris for some years

'. . . Forty years ago today I got on a couple of trains, then caught a bus on a journey to Brands Hatch. The Rothmans World Championships Victory Race was due to take place, a non-Championship Formula One event celebrating the World Titles of Jackie Stewart and Tyrrell. There was an Indian Summer back then, much like this year. So 40,000 or so flocked to the fabulous track on Kent’s border with London, all anticipating a grand finale to the 1971 season.
After the death of Pedro Rodriguez in July, Jo Siffert had assumed the mantle of team leader at BRM. Their Tony Southgate designed P160 was running at the sharp end by the end of the year. Siffert’s dominant victory in Austria was followed by Peter Gethin outfumbling the rest of the pack at Monza, perhaps BRM would repeat their glory days of the 60’s. It was no surprise to see the Swiss ace on pole position, maybe he could round off the year with another win. Siffert made a poor start but was recovering well till on lap 15 his BRM left the road suddenly at Dingle Dell, one of the fastest parts of the track. The impact and consequent fire were severe, Siffert was asphyxiated in the delayed rescue, his only other injury was a broken ankle . . .'

'. . . I was at Brands Hatch – a premier circuit in in southern England – in October 1971. Brands was where I cut my motor racing teeth. It was seven years before Dan Wheldon was born. Fresh out of high school I had recently joined Team Surtees working in the stores. Surtees is still the only man to be world champion on both two and four wheels. Wearing my wet-look team jacket I was there to watch the team (Surtees and Mike Hailwood) compete in the 1971 World Championship Victory Race in honor of the new world champion, Jackie Stewart. It was desperately exciting. Not only because of the race. But there was Surtees in the very car I had seen and touched in the factory being driven by a hero of mine who I was seeing now on a daily basis. In front of him was his team mate, Mike Hailwood, who always had time to say hello to someone as lowly on the ladder as me. And there was I wearing the team jacket in the proud vain hope that someone would notice. Nobody did. I was just another another fan. But in my heart I knew I was “in”.
I was standing just before Druids, the cars flashed past me, a howling mass of metal, air whistling from the wings as the drivers lifted from the throttles and braked for the corner. The air was full of the smell of burning oil, a perfume more evocative than Clive Christian could ever be.
On lap fifteen a pillar of smoke rose on the approach to Hawthorn. The cars in front of the accident continued round the circuit, slowing now as they approached me under a flurry of waving flags. I counted them in: Stewart, Fittipaldi, Hill, Gethin, Hailwood. No Surtees. The circuit was now silent. After the ferocious and addictive roar of high performance engines my ears were singing. It was the only sound I could hear. My thoughts focussed on what had happened just out of sight. Had Surtees been injured? It was worse than that. His friend the talented Swiss driver Joe Siffert had perished, dying not from impact injuries but from smoke inhalation. As inconceivable as it seems today, the trackside extinguishers were inoperative and Siffert had no independent air supply.
The next day I passed John as he walked out of the front door to his factory. A small man in statue maybe, but a huge character, a man used to facing death and dealing with fear. One of the greatest. He was grey faced, bent, all emotion internalized so much so I didn’t even offer a good morning or commiserations, so struck was I by his condition, so mute was I in my teenage world of no confidence.
Siffert’s death lead to a a massive increase in driver, car and track safety to the point where drivers are walking away unharmed by accidents that a few years ago would have killed them . . .'

Siffert is driving his BRM-engined Lotus 24, and Bandini a Centro Sud BRM P578. Siffert would retire, while Bandini would finish 5th.
