Looks like the car Scott Tyler had a few weeks back for $39,000.
I can check it out if anyone really wants to pay the seller that kind of profit.
Same guy that was selling the yellow 73 "Peter Gregg" RSR flared 911S on consignment to EC. Also the owner of the 67S a la 911R clone on consignment to EC. Has been commented on before from members of this board.

The pictures show the car to be a T, not an E, according to the VIN plate.:(
Eric and others,
I would presume we should have separate threads for discussion on cars listed here so as to keep the 'sticky' threads cleaner...

This is my idea of stunning! but I almost couldn't finish the conversation after he told me the asking price...$160,000. That is not a misprint. A wishy washy explanation of how he arrived at that number amounted to there aren't many around like it ( and he thinks it's a repaint because it's so perfect). I like my old T more and more each day and I have a set of sport seats to restore like these.
Daron
mine is going to the next Christie's auction for $280,000. Yes I will make sure it has plenty of "barn" dust and a set of 30 yr. old tires.
Says located in N. Portland, I think this was Earl Greene's car a while back. I'm sure the Oregon guys could tell you more.
Not sure if it still available though... I had a car very similar to this pass me after roaring westbound through the I-90 tunnel into Seattle this evening, I was pleased to see a 911 was causing all the commotion! Don't remember OR plates and I didn't recognize the driver, but he had a huge grin and was turning around to head east again when I lost sight of him!

Im a former Early S Junkie trying to get back in the game...but I see the prices have gone up drastically in the last 5 years. Now it seems I even consider E's and T's....sadly...since Ive had 4 beautiful S cars in the past.
However, ran across this nice car..if one has $65K to spend.

This could be the best early 911E value available today. This original California car is completely rust free and original. Originally Irish Green, it was changed to Gemini Blue several years ago. The paint is presentable but has faded some and does have some stone chips. The fuel injected engine fires right up and it is an absolute blast to drive. Brakes and tires are great. This is a non-sunroof car with polished Fuchs. Priced well below a climbing market at $18,900 and extremely hard to find this original and rust-free. Call me with any questions and to arrange a personal inspection.

Anyone know this car? I'm suprised it hasn't been posted on this site.
http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/car/432262738.html
It is on this thread.I`m surprised it hasn`t sold when you look at who did the rebuild.
I know this car quite well. It is really well sorted out and the performance is formidable. Earl Green was the previous owner. It has been to RGruppe. The three Oregon owners that I am familiar with all took exceedingly good care of this vehicle. Some stone chips on the hood and front bumper are the only real shortcomings that I can think of. These should be easily remedied. I personally think that it is a great buy. I have no interest in the sale of this vehicle, although I would love to see it stay in the beautiful PacWest!
Thanx for the plug Howard!

Firstly the car I got did indeed have rust, surface rust on the whole gas tank underside, rust enough in the rear area to separate the undercoating and rust through in the rear back seat area.
Secondly when I went out to where I had the car delivered I found that the car would not run. At first we thought it was a bad battery so we replaced that. But that didn't help. It turned out the carbs were full of junk which was why the car would not run. Maybe Jack never used the car and it sat for three years as the license plates had a 2004 registration. Jack had told me on the phone that he had had the engine out and replaced the engine area sheet metal and fixed the oil leaks. The car when it came had prodigious oil and even gas leaks.
Jack had also removed the gear shift knob for some reason and the nice patina interior meant a large hole in the drivers seat and door pockets that would just hang there. The tach did not work, the high beams and emergency blinkers didn't work, there were paint drips on the bumper, there were holes in the fender from a missing passenger side mirror.
I had the car at first delivered to a good but general mechanic, Bryan at Independent Motorworks in who spent a good bit of time getting the car drivable. Jack didn't feel any of the issues I have mentioned were anything at all so I took it over to a Porsche 911 only fellow, Gene at Autohaus in Chatham NJ. Driving it over to Gene's it felt like a junker with incredible amount of loose-ness and a very strange gas pedal response. Jack had told me that unless you were racing it you would not really notice that much difference between a Targa and coupe. That was certainly not the case with this car. What a mess.
So what do I do? Do I try to fix the car and sink more money into it? Do I try to sell it now and try to get back hopefully most of what I spent so far? I do have a claim in with ebay but it's hard to know what will happen with this. I wanted the car Jack described and I paid $34,500 so I think I should fix it but am afraid of what the cost would be once I fix the rust, the interior and the mechanical issues. I could just try to sell it but then wouldn't I have to be just be like Jack to get back the price I paid or not make my money back if I mentioned the cars issues?
Thanks for your advice. Yale
I read the eBay description, and I would not have expected the car to arrive not running, etc.
Too-clever sellers will avoid showing the unsatisfactory parts of the car. you'll note there is no photo of the driver's seat in the original ad.
What has the seller offered to do to make this right?
Yale,
Sorry to see that your first post is one like this. This is going to be an expensive and hard lesson unfortunately. No way to win with a good conscience. Sell it for what ever you can get with FULL DISCLOSURE and take the loss. Know that there are more weasels than fellow enthusiasts out there and never buy a car sight unseen again. Recite the mantra "get a PPI, get a PPI" in your sleep. I learned my lesson with a Kharman Ghia at 17 and lost $500 in a week. In 1978, at 17 that is alot!
The fact that the seller is a regular here is more disturbing. Ebay won't do #%&* for you. Ebay is a good place to get extensive exposure for good items but ripe with fraud. It lets the seller do just this exact thing. I've said it before, what do you expect when the company's slogan is "buyer beware". They just hide it in a clever latin phrase. Cut your losses honestly, and patiently continue your search for a good car only buy dealing with sellers in person. PCA is a better starting place. Sorry the seller won't make it right but I also don't know how some folks sleep at night.
My .02 worth.....sorry
Daron
I could be mistaken, but I believe that this SAME seller has another dubious car listed for sale and at first, the replacement engine was NOT disclosed, but WAS discovered by knowledgeable members of this site.
Chuck
Thanks folks. I always gave Jack the benefit of the doubt. I thought ok the car doesn't run and I can see some rust right off the bat but maybe he is right when he tells me that is no big deal, but then we found more significant issues. So I posted my tale of woe over on the Pelican Board and they suggested I post here as well. To be frank I wasn't sure what to expect from the community. I didn't know if you guys were going to raise up in his defense and say that car sounds fine and the issues are normal for a $34,500 car. Jack obviously has quite a few cars and talks as if he is a respected member but on neither board has anyone said one nice thing about him.Quote:

This guy came on Pelican a few years back and put up a weird post about buying 10-20 longhoods to provide for his kids' futures. He subsequently flipped 30 or more longhoods under a couple aliases. Mostly cosmetic minimalist makeovers, as I understand it. There are a handful of high volume flippers out there, and a couple of them 'push the envelope' in terms of mark-up.Quote:

My personal (un) favorite is Unclezak up in Eugene (Bruce Mosieur), He has had five aliases on eBay, but is currently off the radar -- probably for repeatedly selling stolen cars. The one I bought from him cost me a lot to make right -- I had to buy the title from the owner. Unclezak told me he felt it was my fault for trusting him (seriously)!Quote:

PS - I give the seller credit for his fine print:
This is an as is/where is sale, please ask all questions before bidding, not after, make sure you have your finances in place, as full payment is due at close of auction by Bank wire transfer, no exceptions, do not assume anything, if in doubt ask for more information. The narative and pictures are for descriptive purposes only and are not intended to be part of any contract. This vehicle is sold without any implied or expressed warranty of any kind. If you do not intend to complete this purchase according to these terms, then please do not bid. There is no substitue for a personal inspection by yourself or an informed agent. Failure to do so is your responsibility, not mine. I dislike having to be so blunt, but ask questions and keep your expectations realistic and you will not be disappointed.
However, if Yale's story is true, I fault the seller for this LARGE PRINT at the top of the ad:
Wonderful original rust free Arizona 911E Targa

Tom,
well guess what that is what I have been doing, got a few short hood in there to, but Carreras, so what I do is refine my collection, or tweek it if you will, cars come and go in and out of my collection, a little like a portfolio of shares you keep some you sell some. If I should make a profit it goes into the resto of another car. Some of your info is correct, some not, but that's ok. I don't do minimalist make overs, I do mechanical work so I can drive them, and full repay/interior/mechanical if I am going to keep them.
FYI, Flippers don't push any enveloppes, the market is the market, and cars fetch what they bring.
here is my handle the same on Pelican as here.
Thanks for the praise, I try to make people accountable for their actions,Quote:

It is however a very good car with no rust issues. He has failed to show any areas of rust, I'm sorry a scrape on the underside of a steel spoiler, and a pulled a/c hose from the inner fender is not rust for a 35 year old car.
I am confident that is there were such a thing as a Porsche People's Court here on this board, the car would be given the green light.
Unfortunately there is no trial, and now this is happening. I am not the sort to hide from my obligations or be quiet about things, when I feel I am tried and convicted of wrong doings, I have not done.
So stop with the inuendos, or the I hear this, or I think that, and the unfounded attacks, it's all to easy to sit at your computer and be smart and witty,
and say mean things, just like it is easy to hit the buy now button on ebay.
So construtive input please, think first, be nice, stop ripping into people, not only me, I see the way you go for blood, pack mentality,
so if you have a fair and unbiased solution let's here it.
If I have personally duped or stolen or misrepresented myself or my cars, again let's hear it.
But only first hand people I have dealt with, a little support from those that do know me would help too.
if we are going to have an inqusition, let's do it.
Dear Jack,
What I wonder is if as you say,
"I try to make people accountable for their actions,"
why not take responsibility for your words and pictures and not have disclaimers like this one below:
"The narative and pictures are for descriptive purposes only and are not intended to be part of any contract."
Best,

Yale with all due respect I have tried to resolve this, and I asked you over and over again for pictures of the so called rusted areas, and all you have come up with is this one picture where the a/c line has been ripped down, it was not that way, as I would have had it re-attached and would have known that the underseal had failed under it.
My disclaimer is there to make people aware of their actions, and give you the opportunity to have a look and decide for yourself if this is the car for you.
If I missed the rust, shoot me the pictures and we can talk, all you have is one picture of the inner fender, no points of reference.
But you have failed to show the so called rusted areas.
Again if there is rust, then show it to me.
I don't need to be be bulied by this or any other board, to do the right thing,
you know that and I recognise that it is them doing the mud slinging,
so show me the rust, we are at the same stage we were over a month ago
when I asked you to document the infestation,
remember I even called your mechanic, which you accused me of not doing,
later to be retracted, and he still has not called me back.
I'm still here, not going anywhere, selling my house, moving or anything, I either answer my phone, you still have my number, or return calls promptly,
so please, pretty please, take the car back to your mechanic, put it on a rack, call me so I can speak to your mechanic get detailed reference pictures of the problem areas,
post them on the board, let's take a vote, rust no rust, whatever,
if there is a senior knowledgeable registry member in your area, have him be in attendance, and have his input.

Will do. Any volunteers out there reading this?

Yale,
This isn't the best part of this board to get your response.
Start a new post over in the "general" section requesting an Early S Registry member come take a look at this car at your mechanic's shop when it's up on a lift. You should also have your mechanic do a PPI (post purchase inspection) to note the good, the bad, and the potentially ugly. Get a leak down and compression check, (has a valve adjustment been done?) perhaps the engine has been sitting and just needs to be driven.
Perhaps the car is better than you think... perhaps not....
regards,
Eric
Ive traded cars with Jack for several years. He bought my 73E a few months ago. An S registry lynching without all the facts does little for anyone. Yale, I know first hand how dissapointed you can be when a car is not exactly what you expect, we all do. They are rarely as nice as we hope they will be. If there is a real problem, based on an independant evaluation, give Jack a chance make good on it. I know he will. Im sorry this has happened, but I believe firmly that this will be resolved, and Yale will have the car that he wants.
Yale,
Don't know you, never met you, never spoken to you. Having said that, I think that Jack has now given his side of the story and the ball is in your court. If you are serious about a resolution then stop whining on this forum and call his bluff.
I respectfully suggest that you take the car to a real shop that will have a certified mechanic do a REAL inspection or post purchase inspection (PPI) on a lift. You will have to pay a few hours labor BUT all of the cards will be on the table.
I see by your info that you are in NYC, so If it were me, I would schedule an appointment with Autosport Designs in Huntington Station (out on the Island) and take it there. Their number is 631.425.1555
They are well known on this site and they WILL NOT play favorites for either one of you. They are not about to sully their reputation over this squabble.
Since they are neutral, Jack can follow up with Autosport Designs after the inspection with any questions he might have.
Then you two can come to terms.
Fair enough Yale........ how about you, Jack?
The car is at Autohaus in NJ. They are PCA tech inspectors and are across the street from Paterak Bros who are on the PCA tech committee. How do folks feel about either one of those?
By the way Jack's claim that:
ebay kicked your claim out of it's court,
is not true. Here is a letter from ebays fraud department from today:
Yale,
As you may be aware, our company handles and investigates reimbursement requests made under eBay Motors' Vehicle Purchase Protection program. 1973 Porsche 911E Coupe Chassis Number: 9113200727 Engine Number: 6231102 This beautiful and original 911 E has less than 49,000 miles!! With its bright signal yellow exterior and brown/beige interior, there is no better example available today. It was delivered new to Joseph Schneider through Johnson-Bozzani Porsche dealership in Phoenix, AZ. There were many options put on this car when ordered new which included front & rear stabilizer bars, recaro sport seats, oil cooler, 911 S instruments and oil tank, retractable antenna, and tinted glass. The car has been in the western U.S. all its life.
The 73 Signal Yellow E Coupe ...... I think I have a new favorite car   That thing is stunning!

Hi:
I have corrisponded with the seller of the 73' on the PCA website. Below is a paste of his email reply to me. I'm interested in the car with a view to restoring it to excellent driver standards, having all the work done professionally. If his description of the extent of the rust is accurate, I'm looking for opinions on what I would be getting into cost wise. The car will need rust repair, paint. interior and the drive train going through. I will post the pics he sent me later.
"1973 911E Sunroof coupe. $14,500 Vin# 9113201151
2.4 liter MFI - 5 speed 915 trans - 66,000 original miles
We have the COA on the car.
There have been no accidents with the car. The interior is black leatherette.
The COA shows Light metal wheels, stabilizer bars, wheel well molding, comfort package, tinted windshield and side glass, white fog lights(they are not with the car) and a sunroof.
This is a very complete car.
It has been stored in a garage the entire time that it has been off the road. It has a 1985 PA State inspection sticker on it.
A customer of ours started the process of making the car road worthy and then decided he would rather be driving a car this summer than working on one. Had the one fender stripped, replaced the inner fender mount and then decided to not go any further with the car. We bought the car as you see it in the photos. We did a leak test and the numbers varied from a low of 80/45 to a high of 80/70. The engine turns over freely but has not been started in 20 plus years.
The history of the car is it has had three owners. The second owner changed the color of the car and the third owner changed it back to the original color which is Gemini Blue Metallic.
Somewhere early in its life, Porsche replaced the engine in this car with a factory long block.
No rust in the floor pans or battery pans. As you can see in the photos, the rockers and the door strikers need rust repair." Thanks
JF
I looked at the pics I received from the dealer. I would categorize the rust as "serious" One would have to assume it's mostly from road salt and is in other places as well.
Personally, I "stopped" when the engine was non-matching #. For me, the costs to repair the rust and paint would be approximately $15k and that's with me doing much of the work.
I do agree that all the pieces are there and the undamaged parts of the car are very nice.

Curowiss,
Your post his been moved to the right place...
Cheers
anybody on the west side know this 72 E Targa?
non numbers matching black E in Cali
Not far from me. Looks good in the photos, but pretty short on information overall.
Edited post
Careful with this one. Not an E engine in it. I emailed the owner through Ebay when it first appeared and asked him if he was sure it was an E since the yellow tin indicates a T engine. He told me he knows nothing about Porsches but that it runs well. Caveat emptor...
I asked Ray Crawford to look at this car for me when it was on E-Bay for 25,500 a few weeks ago. Feel free to get Ray's impression directly(he is out on the Targa California at this time) or contact me. The car has some warts, but for the right buyer at the right price a good starting point.
I've spoken to the seller several times about this car, although I haven't gone to see it. While the seller is a nice enough guy, I'm not sure whether he is evasive or just doesn't know what he has. It took several conversations to learn the engine number, which is from a 72T. That fact seriously diminished my interest, so I didn't get around to seeing it last week and I'm on vacation through the end of the month, but will try to get a look if it is still available when I return. I believe he accepted a $20k offer in one of his earlier auctions from an established bidder but it didn't close, which, along with the lack of more detailed photos of critical areas, leads me to believe the car has more issues than he understands or lets on.
I'd be interested in comments. Also if anyone is nearby let me know please.

Car did not meet reserve and only got to 27k.
I believe Lucerne629 is the inimitable Jack Molinier who I had a less then honest ebay experience with. Sorry i don't post on this forum more often but as i have shown from my buying patterns I don't really know enough to contribute. None the less I do read and try to learn. Best, Yale
Well EG, I saw your question and have been thinking about how to answer it. I am a bit long winded on this subject but since this is a 911E sales thread I could give just a one word answer, which is - no -. Let me just say I did everything wrong every step of the way on this car. At the end of the day I did try to drive it after a bunch of work. The culmination of which was a series of 5 minute ambulatory drives after which the car would totally die. Rust in the gas tank, (maybe?), left the car sputtering. I had a friend following me and he couldn't stop laughing. I sold the car to a dealer for $15,000 less then I paid for it (not including what i spent on the work). I am sure Jack Molinier was proud of his sales abilities and I will never hear the end of it from friends who wonder what else I could buy without checking it out first - all because someone sounded honest. I will say an agent from the ATF did email me to ask some questions about Jack so who knows what that was about.
Went to Greenwich CT Concours today. Tomorrow is the Bonhams auction starting at noon and is also the foreign concours. Lot number 209 in the auction is a 1969 911E Soft window targa and looks to be a fair estimate IMO.

So, I just came along this. I'm a 912 owner - a '66 under restoration, but thought this was interesting.
Anyone know this car? Is this a good deal? Some things don't look done/right on it, but this seems cheap for a #'s matching car.
Thanks!!
OK912
Looks like a deal, but as you know, the chassis condition is key.
What's the market value for this if it's solid? I know the 912 market pretty well, but am not super familiar with the 911 market. How desirable is the 'E' and it's accompanying fuel injection? Seems pretty sweet to me!!
Regards,
OK912
A 1970 or 1971 911T in excellent shape with an engine and trans rebuilt is about 30-35K. A 911E I think is more close in price than a 911S for the same conditions. So, my guess is 40K+ for one in good shape.
Chris Johnson
I am in the process of restoring a 1969 911E coupe in original Sand Beige, will be ready and for sale in the near future, if anybody is interested let me know.

FYI: Sepia Brown 73 T Targa on Craig's, No affiliation.
I went and looked at this car yesterday and its pretty nice. Needs some love. Looks like a mid 90's repaint, not bad but some minor bubbling here and there, some minor dings, chrome is nice. Solid no rust I could see under it. Looks like Koni shocks, Wheels painted with a rattle can. Dash covered with a plastic cap. Old incorrect sized tires. Really old aftermarket alarm system install with lots of pin switches and warning lamps, all of which were drilled into the body. Cheap aftermarket fog lamps, looked like a real metal "S" front spoiler, newer batteries, interior was OK comfort seats looked recovered at some point, shifter looked cut down. All Sekurit glass except windshield which was scratched a bit. Targa top suffered some damage from a cat and not sure if it folded, aftermarket stereo and speakers, hood was dented and had a little seam rust inside, no evidence of accident damage or repair that I could see, no front oil cooler, late electric mirrors on both side (too bad for that) most of the rubber looked pretty dead. PCA decals.
Guy sad it was a three owner Florida car. Engine sounded really good with no smoking at all. I did not drive it.
Overall not bad, but needs some love to make her right. I have seen much worse.

Looks like a respectable numbers matching E in a decent color with claimed documentation of maintenance that sold for only $17,200. Is it the short description, not enough photos, European market turmoil, or is this just where the market is right now? I would have expected this one to bring at least $10k more.

Just curious. Fantasy Junction has this car on Ebay right now. looks very nice, but is this a sporto conversion????http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Porsc...t_47546wt_1167
Seller does not mention anything about it, but there is a manual in the photos specifically for sporto's.
I contacted Fantasy Junction. Here is the response...
"None of the three owners have changed the engine, so it should be original. The engine and s/n are in the listing, so please feel free to check them out. We think that in that year all the manual sets came with a sportmatic book."
I'll leave it to the Porsche Literati to comment on the manual sets.
Best,
Dave
I agree - it would be nice to get a simple yes/no answer. However:
1) They claim original paint. That still doesn't rule out some touch up. Conspicuously absent is the "Sportomatic" emblem on the rear deck lid. Either the deck lid has been replaced or patched. Hard to tell from the pictures, but there doesn't seem to be any evidence of touch up from the underside of the deck lid.
2) Another clue would be what they did with where the torque converter fluid pump used to be. A picture of that area would be helpful.
I've done Sporto conversions and they are pretty straight-forward. Best done with a rebuild so you can properly balance the flywheel, crankshaft and new clutch combo. I don't see a big downside, as long as they disclose what they know. Can't speak to the manual inclusion question.
- MR
Yes I saw a Metalic Blue 1973 911S at one of the North meets South R-Gruppe events and it was a Sportomatic without the badge on the engine lid saying "Sportomatic".

Here we have a great example of a very well preserved 1973 911E. The car has no rust, the paint is in great condition (the car was repainted prior to 1995). Mechanically the car has been well looked after. We have service records going back as far as 1995 and those alone, when totalled, equal over $19,600 in service performed on the car. In the year 2000 with just 80,000 miles on the car, a replacement engine was purchased from Motor Meister Inc. of Downey CA, at a cost of $6,200 and installed by Stuttgart Northeast in Danvers MA. In 1995 when the car had approximately 72,000 miles on it, the original transmission (automatic) was rebuilt at a cost of $3,400. This transmission was converted to a manual by the current owner; however, the original transmission can be negotiated into the sale of the car.
As you can see from the mileage today at 87,656, the car has been primarily stored since 1995 so neither the motor or either of the transmissions have seen much service. In preparation for sale, we took the car into Stuttgart Northeast in March and there they performed a fully documented $4,000 service. The car is in perfect condition, everything is working, the interior is in exsceptional condition, the wheels and tires are in great shape and overall, the car is a gem. It drives smooth and is tight; it handles very well.

For sale is a rare 1971 Porsche 911e. It has the MFI (Mechanical Fuel Injection). It is too big of a project for me.
US$ 7,500 firm.
Looks like all the major things are there, even some replacement parts... The things I noticed missing are the front bumper and both inner vinyl door covers.... But who knows what else is missing. One of the headlights the glass is broken and one beam of the targa roof is as well.
Surface rust in many places however the only rotten part I found are both door sills. The floor is very sturdy!
The seats are in great condition.
The car is located in Northern New Jersey.
The VIN is 91111210378. The engine number is 6218095.
I have the transferable NYS registration.
I would very much like a local cash deal but everything is possible, even shipping overseas.

It wasn't running when the car was found so we put in a fresh 915 and 2.7 mfi engine we just finished for another project...and, voila: the car is reborn as a sleeper hot rod.
Enjoy.
Hey all, I just blasted around New Hampshire with the R Gruppe guys and now I have to get me an early 911, natch! So, in looking, I came across this one on eBay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Porsc...t_47894wt_1161
This checks off a lot of boxes for me, but I have seen warnings about this seller and the 67S he has on eBay right now is clearly not what it is supposed to be. But this one may be better -- it has the COA in the ad and original miles.
Can anyone shoot holes in the car based on what you can see in the photos? Thanks!! :)
In todays' ( 05/24/2012) market, that targa is grossly underpriced ! Buy it before I do !!
You are correct to be wary of this seller. I think if you do a search for this dealer (Daniel Schmitt) on Pelican you will get mainly negative comments. If you are really wanting to dig on this one I would recommend really arming yourself with lots of knowledge, then start with a phone call and go from there. I would also highly suggest looking at in person and hiring an independent inspection. Since this is your first Early 911, go slowly in the searching and evaluation period. Some us (me included) have learned this leason the hard way.:)
I don't see any photos of the engine serial number. You must see this and confirm it is the original Factory stamped case. If not run away. I see it missing the MFI, which is a big nock IMHO. Was the engine rebuilt in the restoration? Probably not.
I would want to know who and what was done in the 'restoration' of this car. Photos and records. Speaking of records, are there any to confirm the mileage claim? For clarification the color is no Viper Green as that is '73 color, it was originally Kelly or Emerald Green. It was born with leather, which is interior code 16. The A/C is not listed on the CoA, but of course is in the car and hooked up apparently. The windshield washer bottle should be located in the upper driver's side area of the trunk. I see the mounting tab is there so the A/C should probably be there.
Well that should get the ball rolling. There are other details, like incorrect carpet, wheel finish, fog lights, steering wheel (not a raised hub), radio, etc.
Too bad the MFI is gone...
Just love the green paint and engine shroud combo...
The license plate did it for me.
Not that I disagree with Brian but I think we all need to be very careful about casting our opinions regarding a seller. If you use the very simple principle "Caveat Emptor" when purchasing anything, you can avoid having to deal with character issues at all with sellers until it comes to the money part. Is there a greater reason to trust a private party seller who has no accountability or reputation on the line? I think not.
Best advice Brian gave: Have a professional PPI done by a qualified early 911 specialist. Even if you do your homework, you can't accumulate the experince and knowledge that someone in the industry has dedicated their life to.
This car was sold on ebay on Feb 9th, 2012 for about $27,255. It was a dark grey metallic at that time. So, the've done a cosmetic update on the car, but here's the description from that auction.
In the description there's a link to some pics, and if you copy and paste that you might be able to pull the original pics, I tried but I don't know where the string stops and starts....
cheers,
Eric

Description
Offered for sale is a very nice example of and early 911, a matching numbers car with most of its original equipment as listed on the COA (Certificate of Authenticity) from Porsche. Missing is its original radio and extended hub steering wheel. The car was repainted sometime in the mid eighties to a silver gray color to match the then owners later 911. Original color of the car is code 38 or Emerald Green (Viper green), the interior has been redone in black leather and shows well. Since I have owned her, I've done some of the little things, hand throttle, all shift bushigs, rear wheel bearings, repacked fronts and bled out the brake system. The car is currently running weber carbs in place of the original MFI system. The COA does not state the transaxle number, but the car currently has a 4 speed 915 transaxle. I have a 915 5 speed core with a 7;31 R&P that I would be willing to part with for a token amount. I don't have the MFI system. The car runs very good, engine smooth and drivetrain silent. The equipment you see on the car is the original equipment, the Fuchs ( 5 ) with Pirelli P-6 tires. All systems work as they should except the oil level sender which is inoperable. I would be willing to repair prior to shipping as well as do an oil change at the same time and valve adjust. I have a small Porsche shop in Virginia and with focus only on the early air cooled cars. I've been a Porsche owner, my first being when I was going to college and still own several other models. I'm selling this along with a few other late models to focus resources and effort on my 356es. This will be a great car for someone who enjoys the openness of the Targa and can drive it for years to come and do nothing to. In my opinion it would benefit greatly in value if returned to its original color of Viper Green, the MFI restored and the 5 speed gearbox. The car isn't perfect but very nice, it has at some time been hit on the left rear quarter just behind the door and the repair wasn't the best, but not that obvious to the untrained eye. Some rust on the lower right torsion bar support outside, easy fix. This is really a nice car everything fits nicely and doors still have the distinct ping when closed. You won't be disappointed with this car as I have set a low reserve and there is nothing but value to be had in its future. I have posted a few random pics but when I'm able to offer a link to the additional pics I'll do so.On Feb-08-12 at 03:27:40 PST, seller added the following information: https://picasaweb.go ogle.com/ryan242v/1 72Porsche911E?authu er=0&authkey=Gv1sRg NG__daaiJeDfw&feat= irectlink# Link to additional pictures.
Good job Eric. I think the OP has quite of bit of info now on this Targa with your post. Based on the recent sale and the description of the 'restoration' (which in this case is a joke to use that term) sheds quite a bit of light on the seller.
A phone call will confirm if they applied the lipstick, er....I mean had the car repainted.:(
Everybody is accountable in my book and any person who has served in the military or has a grain of honor in them will tell you that all you have is your reputation. It is your only real asset in this world. If you have a shitty one, then it proceeds you in all facets of your life.
PPI is great advice.
Tom
there is a very nice black 71S Targa with a 2.7 RS engine that was listed a few weeks ago here and he says he is going to relist. Much nicer car IMHO.

Thanks all for the comments to this point. I have been checking back all day to read what you have to say. Of course, doing a PPI is a given -- I have bought several vehicles long-distance and wouldn't do it any other way. It seems that, while the seller may have put lipstick on a car, based on the prior owner's description, it wasn't so terrible to begin with. The standards on this forum are, IMO, a wee bit eccentric, skewing toward patina'ed hot rods. I am still deciding where I am in that continuum -- remember, I am driving a 2005 GT3 in perfect condition! It has no patina, but it is a driver's car as you know. Thanks, RSTARGA, I see the appeal of the 1971 "S" Targa, particularly after clocking 1500 miles with similar cars this past weekend on the NEMM! FWIW, I have owned several 911's and my mechanic tells me that I will miss the GT3 within a year or two if I "replace" it with an early one. Someone else said you can always buy another GT3 . . . Any comments you have are much appreciated -- I am still learning, still in the process!
Hard to beat a GT3 from what I hear, never driven one. The older cars have a different appeal, they are simpler and much more direct for the driver. I like to get my hands dirty on occasion and the old cars give the opportunity to do so. New cars are way to electronic for my tastes. Just yesterday my shop owner said that he too was about ready to chuck everything too electronic. A while back they had a 91 Turbo in with a problem in the boost display, no fault code. With my permission they switched one by one every component from my car and it wouldn't go away. Probably a wiring loom problem.
I have a problem on mine that only shows up on below cold mornings and we've never found the problem. Luckily thats only a few days a year in San Antonio.
In general I find it very hard to see that anyone will be able to restore or drive a 30 year from the current lot.
