Sorry, no, the Speed Pilot is gone, the only vestige of it left is some strange apparatus on the back of one of the Speedometer, I guess to get the speed.Quote:

The King was best buds with Jim Kimberly well known gentleman racer of the 50's and early 60's. Trivia, The King bought Jim's Florida home when the Kleenex ran low.

Ok, let me repeat this for you guys in the back. The car is NOT FOR SALE, it's going into my personal collection, along with my A Coupe that won at Daytona, which also isn't for sale. The last time I sold one of my personal cars was when I bought the house I'm in now, I needed money for the down payment so I sold my SC Coupe, and I didn't even advertise it, one phone call and it was sold. But hopefully that will be the last personal car I will ever have to sell, I don't plan on moving again. Also in the collection is my AMG Benz that I've had for over a decade, my B Roadster that I've had for over a decade, my 993 which I brought back from the dead last year, and my 65 Mustang Fastback, the Mustang is probably the only car I would consider ever selling, only because I bought it on a whim.Quote:

Everyone gets it, many of us have businesses. But as evinced by the above your self promotion is relentless, narcissistic, and takes the same form across multiple Porsche forums. You can say don't click your threads, but you add the same self promotion to others threads .

How is a member talking about a car that he is researching for a club publication self promotion?
There are a few souls putting original content on this site, but most use the place to buy and sell parts or research details and car history.
Gib's ST replica thread, Arne's new project car, and Rick's Siffert 70S are about the only ones adding original (self promoting?) content to the mix here.
Are they self promoting?
Should I now want to call Adam to buy a rusty pile of whatever from him because he is writing about King Hussein's car?
I think this Registry is all about nuts and bolts, so if Adams posts were a little more about the devils details they would be better received. It's always a 30' shot of some rusty hulk with a clever caption. How about some actual detail shots from the car? Factory roll bar mounts? Holes from the Speedpilot so we could see where the factory mounted them? The split drive for the Speedpilot? Most folks on here want to learn about details, not how many rusty hulks you can winch onto a trailer. Now, back to getting my hands dirty!

I’m kind of saddened by the content of this thread. I have a lot of respect for Adam, Jim, and Frank and find the attacks to be misdirected.
This forum is to share cool things, and we have threads dedicated to celebrities who owned early 911s so I think it entirely consistent for Adam to post about the car...
who cares if he wants to sell it or not? There are so many “what’s it worth” threads that are obviously pre-sale announcements that garner no abuse.
I suggest we all lighten up and move on and enjoy our shared passion.
A short anecdote about King Hussein to Adam's point about his racing with machine guns. That's not all the king did with protection. Back in the mid 90's he used to come to Jackson Hole to ski with his whole family plus his protection entourage. Hussein and his family could ski but the bodyguards couldn't. So JHMR assigned some of the ski patrol to ski with the family for security on the mountain. I knew some of the ski patrol guys and knew they were carrying while on duty with the king.
I was involved in all this because I was a representative for Rossignol Ski co. at the time. The king liked Rossi Skis and requested private demos whenever he was in town. He was a nice guy and very appreciative of being able to relax while skiing with his family. I spent quite a bit of time with the family on those demo days; had I known he was a Porsche guy our conversations may have lasted much longer.

Bernd there is a picture of another kind of royalty -- Vic Elford in a 911 with a speed pilot on dash somewhere here.. Don't remember where I saw it or maybe even I was the one posted it. Best guess the long photo tread on rally cars? Iirc the codriver seats / belts were not that supportive to secure the occupants for Quick Vic cornering speeds

Don't want to break the chain of personal animosities which I don't understand but are probably providing some enjoyment to those who are participating. Please note photo #4 in post #4 of a right hand drive 300 SL Roadster. The factory never made any of these in the right hand drive configuration. If it is one from the King's collection we should assume that it was very professionally crafted. The present location of the King's 300 SL Coupe that appears in photo #2 is known, but if I were to write anything about it I would probably be accused of having impure motives so I shall remain silent.

Frank. Trying to find a way to politicize this but its beyond my old brain. All I can say is I tried EASY twice for parts but came up empty. I think I talked to Jim on one of my calls and he was terrific. Sorry that EASY is gone. Also talked to Adam twice. He got me some Webasto parts for a fair price and the second time I was looking for a part for my 912 AC setup. Asked him about it at Hershey and he got back back to me a couple of days later saying he couldn't find what I needed in his various spare parts. Nice and appreciated follow up. Got to speak to his Mom at Hershey and she's a real gem. Remember that "parts is parts".
Sorry to bump in, but Adam, how do I reach you? Have sent emails through registry and your website but no reply, trying to purchase some 356 wheels.

For probably the first time in many decades the King's car has a roof over it's head. I went to my storage barn today to grab the rolled over C Coupe that will provide the chassis for the 550 project and put the kings car in it's place. It's always cool when you score an obscure part for a good price. The last one of the Speedpilot units I saw was about $2000. I'm not paying that. I saw this one pop up in Sweden and it said 2000, I passed over it, then when back, it was 2000kr. How much is a kr? I did the conversion, it was $200. Yeah, I can do $200. Pretty sure it's period correct for 1966. If anyone knows please let me know.

Regarding “ period correct” date best I can tell is Mk V was new around 64 certainly by 1965 so mkV is more contemporary with 911 than mk IV new which was from around 1961 (I might be wrong on the supercession but pretty likely based on wording in these dated magazine adverts where each mk is described as “new”)Quote:

So while was in market and in use at time I think the mkIV is more aligned to 356 era; the then latest mk v was possibly more correct for well heeled king’s new 1966?
There are certainly a number of speedpilot models and variants dating back to fifties so like car radios some mk are arguably more contemporary especially if fitted new by wealthy owner like a king — although such specialist kit got retained /reused by more frugal rally navigator community.
The real halda king was the late “king cog” a Bristol man called Martin Jubb but there are good navigation equipment specialists like Autochron in the U.K.

As mentioned in a previous post by 1965 the correct UK adverts were featuring the speed pilot mk V which is described in the text as “new” “improved” so more than likely it was the mk v fitted in the Kings car by 1966

Note the shape of pointer of example in this ad in post #52 (said to be 1964) is the distinctive bent wire like thin end used in the mkV — something referred to in the link to avoid parallax error. I guess it might also depend on if Porsche had one in stock or bought one because it was ordered for the car. Porsche was always big on using what they had on hand first, before ordering new parts. This was especially true with the 356 where parts would sometimes carry over past when they were planned to by a short period, to use up stockpiled parts.Quote:

Think it was a 2.7 mfi iirc it is mentioned in the Carrera 2.7 book. Interesting if it straight trade one let alone two race cars for a brand new G series 2.7 MFI in view of what has happened in the Classic car market since the photo around the mid-seventies.
