72 RS Prototype Hot Rod Build!

This one is mine so time for a build thread! So, when your buddy calls you up and says hey I'm going to sell my 72 what do you think is the best way to approach that? I say let me look at it closely as the first time I saw the car I didn't really inspect it with that in mind. So, I meet him off of the freeway as the car was on his flatbed trailer to take a close look at it. After about 10 minutes looking for any signs of rust as that's really my main concern I can tell it's truly a rust free Southern California car with a perfect original dash (Unicorn)! I tell him I'd actually like to buy it so we make the deal and take it to my house. Some of you in So. Cal will know the car. It's a non sunroof, non A/C light yellow 72T with pin stripes done by a famous guy named Shakey Jake back in the day. The exterior of the car will look like the 72 RS prototype factory car #9113600012. I'm going to paint it Signal Green (more on the paint to follow). I drove the car for awhile doing small upgrades along the way but the engine and transmission leaked oil so I decided to just start the build. Here we go!!

Here's a pic of #9113600012 and of a 73 with Signal Green paint.

So, I have the car torn down and ready for paint. I removed the engine which isn't original to the car. At some point early on the engine was replaced with a un stamped factory 7R replacement case built to S specs. I replaced the flywheel seal and did a valve adjustment so I'm hoping that takes care of the engine leaks. I also installed new SSI's and cleaned up the engine. I'll reinstall this engine as I wait for my 3.2SS EFI twin plug to be finished by Rothsport. The transmission will get short gears 2-4 and a LSD.

Absolutely love Signal Green. Have only seen it in person on one car - very rare shade. I don’t know much about the RS history including not knowing that there was a ‘72 prototype. What are the significant differences from the prototype to the production version?

RS flares will be added and I'll be removing the passenger side battery box for the oil cooler. I will run all the RS decorative trim. Brown carpet and brown leather custom interior. Ivory headliner. Plaid seat inserts. Fuchs 7 and 8 15's with P7 tires 205 and 225's will be used.

I love Signal Green also and all the Signal colors. Signal Green has a few color codes for the different years but I wanted the #7878 70-73 code which isn't available anymore in the 22 line. I had the current codes mixed and could tell right off they weren't correct. So, I had my Glasuirt rep find out why 7878 wasn't available anymore from the original formula and it was because 2 of the toners were discontinued. Toner M96 and M40. So, I tracked down the 2 toners and found some NOS product overseas. I bought it and had Industrial finishes mix it up with the other toners they had that are still available and it's perfect. I think I have the last 2 gallons anywhere.

RS #9113600012 had the S front bumper and no rear engine lid spoiler/duck tail and was built on the 72 chassis. If you search the vin # there's a lot of info about it.

S front bumper, no ducktail, 7/8 Fuchs and signal green.......

Now that you point out some differences from the prototype RS I can see them very clearly in the photo you posted. Very cool. And I love the color!

Nice! Very cool. Mine will have the trim and no driving/fog lights and 72 lenses and grills but yeah that's the ticket.

Pretty cool, Scott. I knew Pete had sold the car, but didn't know you bought it. A hot rod patterned on that '72 prototype will be awfully cool.

Suspension details:

Elephant sport rubber bushings for A-arms, camber plates, spring plates and trailing arms.
18mm front sway bar kit. 18mm rear sway bar.
Aluminum 74-77 trailing arms.
20mm hollow front torsion bars and 26mm rear.
Rebuilt steering rack with Turbo tie rods and Elephant drop link tie rod ends.
Bilstein front struts with 16mm raised spindles. HD inserts.
HD rear shocks.
Elephant adjustable spring plates.
65mm front and rear titanium wheel studs and titanium lugs.

Yeah Arne, I really wasn't planning on buying it but when it showed zero signs of rust I had to. Even after taking it apart it's dry as a bone. It lived it's life in the perfect climate.

I usually change the tinted windows when I build a hot rod to clear but the glass on this car is so nice that I'm going to keep the green tint as I think it will look good with the Signal Green color. Stoddard sells the rear windscreen with the green tint and no defrost so I'm going to do that. I'm even probably going to keep the glove box door in it as well. Crazy right? Haha

Are you going to go full-out and replicate whatever chassis "enhancements" the prototype had? Did it have reinforced aluminum trailing arms?

Also, are you going to do just the RS arches, or the full lightweight panel? I ask because eventually I need to dump my SC flares for RS flares...

The exterior of the car will look like the RS prototype but I'm making changes to the interior and some other stuff. It's a hot rod so I can have some fun! I'm not using the factory sport seats I'm going with RS seats and going with lightweight door panels like I usually do. I'm not going to leave the trunk black I will go body color in the trunk. No, I don't believe the RS prototype had aluminum arms but that's a no brainer for me. I'm just doing RS arches as there's no way I'm removing factory perfect rear quarters. Plus, the RS quarters you buy from Porsche are just too damn expensive. But, even if someone gave me a pair for free I still wouldn't cut off the ones on the car. I will do the RSR welded in front strut mounts and run the strut bar but that's all as far as reinforcements.

When I had the engine out the first time I cleaned up the engine bay and repainted it and added a new engine sound pad bought from Alex on this site. I restored the flapper boxes as well and replaced the rubber seal in the engine bay.

New P7's mounted on the restored 7 & 8 15's. Looking forward to trying out these P7's. 205 front 225 rear. Tony has started on the seats so pics coming when I get them.

Love those tires Scott....had them on my 73 with the wide wheels.
Did you get those from Lucas Classic Tires?

I did get them from Lucas. I normally use Longstone but I tried Lucas and they were here the next day.

Yes. This car is dry as it gets so I'm not removing any of it. You have a good eye.

It's always a big accomplishment when you get to primer day! Even a rust and accident free chassis takes a lot of time to get to this stage. Anytime you do a color change it's just a ton of work. Anyway, flares are on, gaps are dialed in and primer now drying. Paint and body work just simply takes a lot of time, beats up your body and gets you dirty as hell.

I've bumped up a couple of things on the build. Now it will be a 3.5L engine built by Rothsport instead of the 3.2! GT3 crank, ported heads, twin plug, EFI and all the good stuff. I'm also going to install right off the bat the Elephant 930 brakes which I always was going to do anyway but I thought I'd start with a set of S brakes I had restored but nope right to the 930's with the added HP.

Whoa. That engine will pack some hella punch.
Having a been a painter in the early days the primer is the best of all the steps. Color is fun, but not relaxing like the primer.

when you shoot the primer, not the action of just covering the bare metal, but actually are priming for the purpose of the sanding out phase

Jeff built me a 3.5 for my ST years back it was just the best engine I've ever owned! I'll post dyno results when it's done.

The 930 brake set up looks great. Can you tell us the weight penalty when you use larger 930 rotors over the 911S brake set up that you originally intended?

I'm not sure Bert. I'm sure someone has weighed the difference. The stopping power the 930's are simply amazing and my 3.5L will take care of any extra weight of the rotors. :D

You and me both! I'm going to paint the engine bay the same as the body color so you'll see that first and then the trunk will get painted. I've been sanding in the trunk for 2 days straight mostly by hand. It's not fun!

I found more of the discontinued toners for sale on eBay so I had 2 more gallons made. We'll batch all 4 gallons together so it will all match perfectly. The new paint looks exactly the same as the older paint I had mixed up but we'll mix all 4 gallons together so down the road if needed for a hood respray, front bumper or something it will match perfect. I've also been toying with the idea of painting my 87 hot rod the same color when I remove the sunroof. Can't have too much paint.

I definitely struggled with green as final colour - signal, jade, chartreuse (linden), birch (lime or light), etc... so many great green colours... before settling on glacier blue... and struggled with all the blues... guess i will need to consider doing another one... Really looking forward to seeing how your signal green comes out!

Color time! I'm just loving this color! It has more yellow than Viper green and is creamier is probably the best way I can describe it. Like all the Signal colors and single stage colors it changes a lot depending on the lighting. Trunk is painted so here's some pics inside from my phone. Fenders and hood hinges painted on the car just like Porsche did. I did paint the engine bay body color even though it was black from factory but it's my hot rod so I'm doing it body color.

Haha, it's a stupid amount of work for a trunk! Doing a color change and protecting the original dash is a pain is the ass!! But worth it as you know.

Where we mask holes to paint the trunk vs where we mask to paint the exterior is different. For example when painting the door jam area with the doors removed just like the factory did we will mask from inside the trunk. You're also leaning on the fenders when painting the trunk. We shoot 2 coats in the trunk so first coat dries for a bit then we shoot the second coat. Now we will mask off the trunk and engine bay and interior of the car so during the block and wet sanding of the primer so it will stay clean and perfect. We give the primer plenty of time to dry before blocking. The exterior will get 4 coats of Glasurit 22 line. I'm painting the trunk much better than Porsche obviously did as the paint in trunk that Porsche did was barley one coat if you want to call it that. More like over spray. There will be no polishing in the trunk area. It's done.

My finger prints are gone and it's a weird feeling. I couldn't turn on my computer with the finger print option. 5 days straight of block sanding, guide coat, block sanding, guide coat, wet sanding, guide coat, wet sanding, guide coat. Brutal, you really can't understand how much work it is to do a professional paint job! Hug your paint and body guys if they're good at what they do. Color on exterior end of next week.

Yes, it's much better to have 2 people on the job than one. A lot of shops only dry sand now but I can't see how that's even possible to get the results that wet sanding does. In Oregon we can still do it the right way and get the best paint.

I agree and thank you. Was pain of course getting all the discontinued toners and having it mixed but so worth it in the end.

So, 2 more days of wet sanding and masking. Friday spray day tomorrow! Gonna be a nice hot day. Painting in the afternoon.

80 degrees in Oregon today, finally! All new filters in the spray booth. Wiping down with wax and grease remover then tack cloth. White sealer than 4 coats of base/color. I'll pull it out in a few days for outside pics in the sun. This is by far my favorite color. Signal Yellow second favorite.

Thanks guys! Yes, Rich that's the plan. Drive to Buttonwillow and do the Rgruppe track day then to Rennsport. It will all depend on if Gamroth can get my 3.5 and transmission done in time. It's being built now so I should make it. I'll have it together in 2 weeks when I get back from color sanding. Starting color sanding in a couple days. I have all the parts, glass and interior ready to be installed.

Scott- I can't wait to see the finished product. Pretty sure you're going to make us all "signal green with envy!" Looks awesome. Nick

The last day of color sanding! Did all 4 grits in one day. Brutal. Polishing next and then I'll install the suspension and bring it to my shop just a few miles away. I just got my finger prints back but now they're gone again. So fun.

So, one more polish to go tomorrow morning and cleaning. I'll be installing the suspension tomorrow afternoon. After the car is fully completed then a final polish will be done after the build is finished. I'll have some cool photo's tomorrow of the suspension installed.

Uncle Dave's PCA Germany region badge from the 70's before they cancelled the Germany region in the 80's. The original grill has that nice purple haze patina going on.

It's clay bar cleaned is all then the Xpel is applied. I do the whole front fenders, hood, front bumper and then down the rockers and halfway up the rear flares and lower half of the rear bumpers. It's a fantastic way to protect single stage paint. After PPF is installed you can ceramic coat it just like paint if you want.

New from Porsche. Black and not finned. I like the factory lines better. Factory black paint not powder coated.

Interior carpet started today. There's a lot of work involved. We use closed cell foam and glue it in and sand it down to fit perfectly. This is to fill the peaks and valley's. It's super light weight. It's a bit messy after all the sanding but it's why the carpet lays down flat. Carpet is a medium brown haargarn bound in leather. We also use Jute material to fill the voids and get it to transition smoothly. Leather on the lower B pillars.

It's nice when a long term plan comes together. Interior done!

Stretch provided the belts. The reels he sells and I had him replace with US webbing and restore my original tongues so I can use with my original long sport receivers. Nice new date tags as well. Thanks, Dave. Steering wheel is a Momo NOS vintage 370mm stacked logo early flat wheel. Most I've ever paid for a wheel but I truly believe I was the first to mount it in a car. There were no wear marks where the screws tighten. Pics with seat installed. Matching leather installed on the dash trim.

Sounds like you will be breaking in the car in a couple of weeks!

I'm going to give you all a helpful tip when installing the decorative trim on the front and rear bumpers. Don't use the beading material from Porsche. Part number 999.911.198.4B as its garbage. It's way too small and thin. It won't snap into place and stay there and it's not wide enough like the original beading. Terry at International Mercantile has the correct product. His snaps in and stays in place and is the proper width as original.

I had the whole car ceramic coated over the PPF (Xpel) as well. This will make it so easy for me to clean after a drive. Spray on some spray-on car wash wipe off and done. I'm still waiting on the rear bumper decorative trim pieces from Germany. Front bumper is done. Electric fan on the oil cooler is wired up. It will turn on whenever the oil temperature hits 195 degrees. Oil tank installed.

It takes experience, patients, special wrenches, some bending, walking away to collect your thoughts and an extra person to install the new hard lines on a 72. You also have to buy a special oil line from Elephant Racing because Porsche changed the hard line that goes under the 72 tank. So much fun! Good thing I've done this before.

The ST will be there!

All buttoned up and just waiting on the 3.5L and transmission. The rear bumper trim pieces made it from Germany. Strut bar getting done this week. I think down the road I'll install electric A/C. Especially if I sell my 87 Hot Rod.

No, lights are H4's. I run a relay for H1's. There's a relay for the electric oil cooler fan hidden under the front slam panel.

So, yesterday was engine break in day on the dyno and today was mapping the A/F ratio and trying 5 different mufflers! it's kind of unbelievable the difference just a muffler can make. I'll do a detailed comparison after Monday for you guys but here's some pics from today.

You might need to install some "airbags" with that motor though.....

We're at 340 plus HP probably end up around 345 so yeah it's going to be speedy! Just how I like it.

I'm curious if the factory air box affected your power rating. Did you swap it out when you tried different mufflers?

No, didn't try a different air box because this is what I'm going to run. Foam filters would be too tall the fit under the engine lid so this SCRS style air box is what will fit. I also dig the look of it. All the gains from the first pull were achieved by changing to a dual out muffler. I was going to run the Dansk single out sport muffler but it sucked on flow. We next tried the Scart single tip muffler and it was a 10-12 HP increase. Then we tried a dual out sport muffler and had a big jump to 20HP increase. Then we used a dual out R style muffler and got the final result of a 30HP gain. So, I'll be using the dual out R style muffler instead. My heads have been ported so they flow a lot of air so needed the muffler to do the same. I could get even more gains probably if I went to 1 3/4 headers but I'm going to use the new larger SSI's. I like the look and function of them and am very happy with the HP and Torque.

Was the dual out R style muffler the loudest muffler in your testing? Is the sound bearable for street driving?

The pea shooter was the loudest but I don't like the look and sound of those. The R sounds great. You'll hear it at Rennsport. It's definitely good for street. I have no radio so it's all engine music for me. I'll have to see which sound I like the most the intake, exhaust or short gears. I did keep the factory sound deadening in so that will help. I'll report back on the sound when I drive it home from Rothsport.

347.4 HP from a 3.5L yes he was happy as am I.

As my 72 gets closer to the finish line I contemplate selling my 87 hot rod and then I drive it. 2500 lbs 3.4L twin plug, short gears, aluminum pressure plate, 930 brakes, blows ice cold A/C. Power windows and central locking. Remind me to never sell it. It's bad to the bone.

SSI dual out muffler.

Well guys, I tried my best to bring the car to Rennsport but I'll be driving the 87 hot rod. Drove the 72 home today which was amazing! Car is stupid good but when I got home I noticed a transmission leak that needs repair before a trip like Treffen and Rennsport. I'll bring it to a California event next year.

Smart decision, Scott!

So, a faulty main shaft seal was the issue with the transmission leak. All fixed now. Just drove my back road country loop and all I can say is wow! This car is faster than my Signal Yellow ST I built which is hard to believe. The ST has more grip but the car sticks great on the P7's. All sorted now and just fun in the future. The engine is unreal. The GT3 crank is really what makes a 3.5L so good. It has torque from the bottom to the top. It just keeps pulling all the way to 8K! The short gears are the perfect combination to the engine. The Elephant 930 brakes are amazing, suspension is just right and when you need heat in the cabin which we do in Oregon the SSI's provide more than enough. I added the side rocker decorative trim and the wheel caps. Now, I'm wondering do I install the 3.5L engine grill badge or keep the stealth 2.4L one on? I think I might fill the exhaust hole on the rear bumper as well.

I painted the air filter cover black. No carbon fiber look for me. And yes, I changed the license plate frame but not because a fricking Niners fan wanted me to!

Great looking car. I think it looks better with the exhaust hole filled.

It will be great if you can share more about engine build ; shaft i know that it's gt3 but pistons and ods are they are as well from gt3 ?
It's orginal core or did you bore smaller engine?

Don't see on the pictures but are you using bosch mfi pump or you have different solution that you getting so much power?

Amazing build for sure one of the best here.
