Disagree the actual part number for the RS is 806.10

This is the paper parts book 72/3 which is quite clear on the wheel part number for the RS

Also I have a genuine first series RS with its wheel attached and still with early RS only plastic horn push attached For avoidance of doubt it is marked 806.10 not 805.10.

As is wheel on a 22k mile low owner second series RS that I know well.

It might be an excellent wheel worth every penny but it is important part numbers for original RS don’t get confused which is why as long term RS owner I bother to comment

That's not true at all. 805 was early 914-4. 806 was 914-6 and the one used for 73RS builds. Since 914-6's were assembled at the Porsche factory and 914-4's were assembled at the Karmann factory, it makes sense that Porsche pulled parts for the RS from the Porsche bin and not VW. You have a nicely redone thick grip, extended hub (also not an RS feature) I used to make something very similar and sell them for $800-1000.

Agree with mepstien… the 806.10 wheels for the earlier RS are typically date stamped several years prior than the car’s actual date of production so Porsche evidently used up old stock 806.10 wheels that were probably originally intended for the 914/6. Picked and used what could have been dead stock for the earliest of Carrera RS examples. The 914/6 was defunct by time assembly of RS started in earnest so it makes practical sense . Another case of Porsche being frugal in consuming nos inventory! When stocks those earlier dated 806.10 ran out the 806.10 then seen in RS typically have a date stamp much more aligned to the date of its chassis production suggesting they’d ordered fresh batches of 806.10 specifically for the Carrera RS model rather than looking for other part numbers form 914/4 etc that might’ve been similar . That action to have 806.10 made again in 73 for the RS shows they viewed 806.10 as the correct wheel and why 806.10 is the wheel part for an RS listed on the spare parts the catalog and what is found attached to unmolested RS examples.

That chart has some incorrect items. 805 10 was only 914-4. 803 10 was hard rimed 914-6, not 914-4. No mention of 804 10, hard rim early, 914-4 wheel.

I've owned multiples of all the wheels listed, some removed from one owner, non modified cars. It's not rocket science but easy to make mistakes when someone who is well known like Jim, puts out an incorrect chart and people think its gospel.

Even calling the above 914-4 wheel with an extended hub a RS styled wheel is incorrect. RS cars never had the hub spacer. Using a hub spacer on a 380mm wheel is a good mod for an SWB car since otherwise, the rim sits too close to the dash. The 420mm wheels didn't need a hub spacer. Careful wording on an ad doesn't make it something it's not. The spacers are sold aftermarket as is the leather wrap. Calling a steering wheel rare because you aren't familiar with 914 wheels doesn't make it rare.

People rely on the Sticky thread on these wheels. I am sure the community would greatly appreciate if the experts on this topic could update the sticky thread with the correct and complete info and light others’ candles. GLWS

A google search took me to 914 world where I read the following “The USA Porsche-Audi HO Recall campaign, which was issued after all 914s were made, indicates that it applied to 'approximately 83,000' 914s. On that, I think it’s reasonable to believe that ~83,000 914s made it to the USA, including all 4s and 6s.”

While I don’t know I’ve little reason to doubt that figure as poster seems very knowledgable on the 914 model. P+A is USA (NA?) I suppose ?

While the Carrera RS Model was never officially sold in USA when new in model year 73 a number of examples have made their way across the pond over the years and perhaps with some lost their original wheel when owners fitters an aftermarket one — however the 83000 for NA or nearly 120000 examples worldwide is a heck of a lot of steering wheels that could be kicking around! Maybe that scale gives pause when the topic of orphan steering wheels of 380mm size? Relatively few would be 806.10 of which the 914/6 may have been the donor.

In 2020 I purchased a genuine 914/6 wheel for $200 from a well known member here — that price plus $85 insured shipping from USA to UK. It is rough compared to my lovely patinated but otherwise perfect original RS wheel; crucially it is stamped 806.10 with the same date and other markings match. Not a real RS wheel as it wasn’t ever on a 73 RS afaik but is a from 914/6 according to the very knowledgable seller. Handy to keep as a spare core that can be recovered if I ever felt the need to safely stow the cars original one due its rare very fragile plastic RS horn push and the lovely original leather with a grain and finish that’s hard for even the best recoverers to reproduce.

Maybe if I recover it then bolt it to the RS even for ten mins I could genuinely say it’s been removed from an real RS and ask nearly 10x :)

Are you saying the OEM wrapped the wheels themselves rather than VDM who supplied wheels to the OEMs and their contract manufacturer ?

Definitely not oem. I’ve owned at least 80 oem vdm wheels. Leather is always fine grain and stitching is flat to the seam. Doesn’t matter if it’s Porsche or VW. Looks like AGL/Allan Gunn leather, wrapped well but definitely not factory.

I don’t have pics. Just personal experience. Google might get you some pics. Factory leather is easy to spot.
