How about some of the rarer early choices like the Cosmics or these-
and these- Can someone identify them?
alloy spare?
Yes of course, Ferrari and Alfa and Fiat. Good look. Are the set with the spinners Campagnlolo? I'm guessing. I don't know, but they look kind of like the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint wheels to me(?). The following are Cosmics in 911 fitment-
I wish I hadn't passed on these, again in 911 fitment-
How about 911 spacesavers on a 356?
http://img16.photobucket.com/albums/...utlaw00007.jpg
It appears that these were made by the MacAfee (sp?) brothers in LA many years ago.
Lars responded on another thread-
MacAfee-Wheels...
Hi Guys..The wheels you are referring to are :MacAfee (sp) wheels...If I have the story right ,one or both of the MacAfee brothers(Jack and Ernie) casted these here in Los Angeles in the 60's (In aluminum alloy,I believe..)...Los Angeles,California is embossed on the inside of the rim...
I have them on my 356 and they are 5.5 x 15 with a little different offset than the regular wheels...In case you are looking/finding some...make sure you get the ones with the thicker reinforced "spokes"(stronger for "spirited" driving and they stay balanced longer)...I've seen copies without the reinforcement and w/o the raised center "hub"...I'm told they were used for VW's,dunebuggys,etc-in the 60's and 70's...

I have a set of these in unpainted magnesium. They are a very Italian looking wheel, even though English. There was Soft Window Targa at Dunkle Bros. this weekend with the same wheels as in your post (painted). They look great on an narrow bodied SWB car.
I meant the Cosmics, not the ATS's.
Al Taylor of Al Taylor's sports cars has a set of those cosmics

$400 for the set....tell him Per from GRM sent you.
Wish he had a set of the ATSs

an interesting thread
I am worried about what the hidden meaning may have been there. Let's pray we are not going off-topic again.
9" x 15 Minilite on a 71ST
http://www.early911.co.uk/historic/a...s/PB090018.JPG
Gotta love those Minilites. Takes me back to the 'racey' 2002s and Datsuns of the early 70's. Always wanted a set on my V6 Capri, but there was college... Great memories
How about these as candidates for the ugliest 911 aftermarket wheels made ?
Western Alloys in 6x15" :
Jens..George is right on as usual..those (5 spoke)are ATS..very strong; I ran them on my 73 2002 for years in NYC, and sold them for DAVMAC (while a student). The black centered modular appear to be Ronal's.....
http://www.ttrsracing.com/clearance_sale.htm#Rally Wheels
Although not obscure, these revolution wheels are very strong for racing and are a great price to boot! They do look good on an early 911 with no fender flares, and the 15x7 is a perfect size. At 200 bucks a pop, I think these are a great value compared to the pricing of some of the other wheels.
I recall a discussion on pelican on panasport (mini-lite style) wheels.
there was some company in NZ that produced one for 911 and the exchange rate would have made the price quite good.
I'd seriously consider a set of those even thoug I've already got panasports on my tii... but then again I've got two early 911 so....
this is a good look-
This is a fairly unique look for the early911. 924 turbo wheels sort of.
sorry but those basket weaves look awful in my eyes!
I'm just exploring what the various period wheel options were for the early 911. :cool:Quote:

This is a Carrera RS 3.0 rally car. I could see these unusual wheels looking better in black paint. I don't think they are of the period though.
You think they look awful - just try cleaning them. It takes as long to clean the wheels as to do the rest of the car. My Audi came with Ronals and they were a nightmare. They are going on e-bay for some poor sucker.
I posted this pic somewhere and got not a ton of help. I have one, and really would like another to match. Outside lip to outside lip, is a little over 8". They kinda look like minilights, but the spoke design is differant.
Rick, I don't know...Panasport maybe?? Here are the Minilites of the time.
Thanks Jens,
I'll sit back and maybe someone will pull through with a answer, or maybe a wheel!!
Rick
Is the no identity in the casting of that rim? There should be a size at least.
My right front went flat the other day. It gave me the oppourtunity to throw on my ATS and take a quick drive.

I like that look Earl! Nice.
Here are some 356 repros in alloy. The one on the right is 356C and 911 fitment. I've lost the link to who makes these. Does someone know? Beautiful but expensive as I remember.
At Dunkle's last week there were a few people who had those wheels on 356 cars. They are made on the west coast somewhere.

Jens,
I saw those in Ventura year before last. They are incredibly light.
E-mail Demosthenes, he is the guy that showed them to me. He knew the guy that was selling them. Here is his website.

Rick those really appear to be min lites but w/ a different offset/ spoke design, more common to the fwd apps...but I have seen ml just like those.....
Rick -
Those look like the "sport" version. The ones I have seen in years past were in 15 X 6.5
As a result of wanting a bigger wheel, many of us used to go for the ATS star wheel that is shown earlier in this thread. They were cheaper and in 15x7 and 15x8 they had the funny offsets needed to stuff some big tires on the 'ole 911. When I purchased my rally car, it came with a few sets of wheels and tires like these. I will contact the guy I sold them to and see if he'd be willing to let one go. Please confirm the above size of 15x6.5 to the wheel you have, to insure that you would have a match.
Jim
This is a interesting thread for me as I am really into vintage wheels, and seats.
The first picture that Jens posted showed some wheels at a swap meet. The ones on the right with the spinners, I have a set of four that I thought were so ugly I was going to through them away. I guess I will ebay them and probably they will do the moon!
As for the ATS wheels, I really like those too.
Jim, you mentioned "Sport Version", do you mean sport version of the Mini lights, or Pannasport ? My wheel has no markings or brand name.
I will measure it exactly tonight and report the results.
The 356 repro wheels posted by Jens are from West Coast Haus in Huntington Beach, 714-892-5050. No web site.
They feature billet aluminum centers and CNC machined, spun aluminum outers. The 356 C wheels fit early 911's and come in 5.5" and 6" X15". I considered them for my 67...before I went with fuch's. Oh, and they are proud of them ($$).
Shawn. :)
Jim,
I measured my single Minilight/Panasport last night and it was kinda odd. Outside lip to out side lip measures 7 5/8". Inside the lips where the bead sits is still about 6 3/4. So I don't think it's a 6.5.
That is weird. I am not sure what to make of that. I would start knocking on the doors of 914-6 GT owners or past owners. maybe the wheel you have is for the front of those cars back in the good 'ole Daytona days.
BTW, where would you put the current market price on an original paint/no rust/low mile '70 911T these days?
A bit of a tough question without seeing the car. Is it original paint, but needs to be done? How are the mechanicals? Low miles sounds good, but cars that sit detererate slowly when not regularly used. I am not a fan of the Zenith carbs on those cars, but rust free original cars are few and far between.
Rennman has a nice 72T MFI car that matches that description that I have seen and he is asking 12,000. That car is more sought after than a 2.2 T. So kinda take it from there. His car was 85% original paint and needed some of the basic freshening up do be a daily driver.
Back to the wheel. There are no markings of size or brand name on the rim anywhere. Go figure. Nice size though.
Thanks guys, for helping to identify some of these unusual wheels, and thanks for the tips on sources.
I thought I would add a picture of the mighty ARs on this beauty. They just look so right!
Jens, was that sarcasm? I think they really do look nice.
What makes you think I'm being sarcastic? Not at all, I'm quite sincere.
no clues that you are a sarcastic sort. just that I'm sure there is somebody out there who would consider it wrong to apply AR torque thrust wheels to a porsche.
I love them! can they still be acquired in the proper fitment?
sure I just dumped a bunch of $ into getting 7 inch fuchs replicas outfitted to both my early 911.... those look sweet!
These are for the 911 too, RSR fendered ones anyway. 8 1/2 & 10 x 15s. Someone has them over on Pelikan's classifieds. I think with blacked out centers they would look great on a vehicle modified "for sports purposes". ;) ;)
the set-
Way cooool Jens!
And to think those wheels were not probably over $150 each back in the day. I 'll gladly pay $600 for a set.
Are any of these wheels lighter and stronger than the Fuchs?
Are any newer wheels lighter and stronger?
I don't know, but cool has just got to count for something! :D
I was wondering the same thing, maybe people could weigh the ones they have (?). I know the Mahle Magnesium alloy Stove burners are 9.9 pounds making them the lightest that I know of. But then again they are only 5.5 inches wide. The Fuchs forged wheel are probably hard to beat for strength, but I wonder.
Mahle-

Rick - there's a new post in the parts for sale section for a set of 4 7x15" magnesium Minilites which look exactly like your wheel.
Here's the link:

Andy,
Thanks for the tip. Yep, those are the wheels. I little to much for me to spend right now. I emailed the seller that I have a 5th wheel for him so offer as a spare!
If those really are original mag Minilites and not the later aluminum ones, it is not a good thing that they are powder coated. It is very important to be able to detect cracking in the older mag wheels, and powder coating can make crack testing problematic.Quote:

I agree entirely - most of the original magnesium Minilites I've come across in recent years would only be suitable for 'shows' as opposed to any serious use.Quote:

Wow. Those are American Racing 200S wheels, which were quite popular with the hot rod guys decades ago. I recall my dad had a very wide set of those with the gray textured centers on a flared fendered '66 Corvette back in the day.Quote:

I never knew they were available in 911 offsets/bolt patterns, although I believe that American Racing still makes that wheel, and the Torq-Thrust D as well. (Non Mg, obviously...)

I found out that American Racing will make the Turbo Thrust II in 911 pattern. Special order. It's the same look as the New Mustang Bullit wheels. I was given a car show price of $265 each. No worries about aged magnesium failures.
