Kermit is ready to come home -- Need Help

Gentlemen:

This is where I ask for some suggestions. Kermit is ready to come home. I am flying to Westport, CT on Sunday to pick him up.

I have two issues:

1. The person that was going to do my PPI is MIA, and I need to find someone else to do the final inspection. I know about Deman Motorsports in Nyak, NY, but Mike said that this is a long way away. He suggested a local place, Fairfield County Motorsport. I know nothing about this place, and hope that someone on this board has experience with them.

2. We are going to drive Kermit back. A straight shot is about 1,000 miles. If we take a bit of vacation along the way, going through Deals Gap, it will be about 1,700 miles. Mike is nervous about this. He suggested that I have the car trucked back to Chicago. He is planning on taking the car on a 100 mile jaunt today or tomorrow, but he said that the car has been basically sitting for two years, and he doesn't know what he doesn't know. Specifically, he said, "What happens if you lose a wheel bearing somewhere in Virginia?" I am comfortable that the engine will run correctly. The car had new brakes and calipers put on before Mike bought it. In addition, a new clutch and tranny rebuild.

So, am I tempting fate to take Kermit on a drive like this without being more familiar with how the car runs? Will a solid PPI give me confidence that I can take the car "on the road?"

I have a new 3.0 engine with about 300 miles on it now. It runs very well, but it requires maintenance in the first 1000 miles during break-in. I just adjusted the valves yesterday, and they were pretty far off. I also recently developed a noise from the left chain tensioner, and still haven't resolved that. The noise might have been the valves, but since I have an exhaust leak between the muffler and the Birsch headers, I'm trying to fix the leaks before I start the engine again. Also, I can't get my clutch adjusted right (this started after about 200 miles). It either just needs more tweaking, or there might be a problem inside the tranny/clutch area.

As you can see, there are a lot of things that need sorting out. I wouldn't want to be far from my garage. Therefore, I vote for shipping.

goferit! I say this because Larry's car doesn't have a fesh engine, the work involved mainly body and paint...

When I leave Otto's, he guarantees his work if I want drive my car to the moon. Who is Mike? And Mike "doesn't know what he doesn't know?" What the heck does that mean? Lose a wheel bearing in Virginia? Why? Are the wheel bearings bad? Hasn't every possible system in your car been checked and rechecked? :confused:

I once drove a 356 I just purchased from LA to Michigan, the PPI gave me some confidence. Not even the slightest problem during the trip - these cars love the open road.

The 100 mile shakedown should identify any issues. Have the points, plugs, wires, alternator and battery well checked. Also, tire condition and wheel balance/alignment. Have him run the 100 with the lights on, and make sure the heat works... you'll need it!

I understand your comment. This purchase was a "bare metal repaint." There was a minimum of mechanical work that was contracted for. If I lived in Connecticut, I know that Mike would stand behind his work. The issue here is that I live in Chicago, and Mike doesn't want to be beholden to a Porsche shop in Chicago charging him for work, with no recourse or verification. I understand that. As with any used car purchase, it should run well now, but no one can guarantee that items won't fail next week, next month, next year. This isn't a new car!!

Re: the wheel bearings, I think that he is just being cautious. He has been very conscientious during the rebuild, but we haven't really gone over all the things that can be checked. The car is supposed to be operating properly. I am going to suggest (strongly) that he repack the front wheel bearings before I pick up the car, since the car has been sitting for two years.

Also, the shop doing the PPI will take it out on the road to make sure it runs right. I just felt that a 1,700 mile jaunt with an unfamiliar car was a bit - how you say - (spoken with a french accent) adventuresome.

I really want my wife's first experience in a Porsche to be a good one.

Mike's a pretty well-respected guy -- but in this case, he just did paint and bodywork to a used car. On the other hand, he's selling the used car. And this isn't a $5,000 fixer-upper, either.

I'd do the drive. You're going to be on the east coast, where there's good cell phone coverage and lots of people. Between this board and Pelican, you're about 10 minutes away from a solution to just about any problem.

Bring basic tools and spares. If your cell phone doesn't have internet capability, I'd use this as an excuse to get one that does.

Early 911's are very simple and reliable cars. It would be nice if the seller were a little more confident about what he's giving you the keys to. But if it's running now, it'll probably get you back to Deerfield without a hitch.

Jack, I think that he is just reacting to my nit picking for the past 6 months. I have been making sure of the pieces and I think that he may be concerned that if the Gas Mileage isn't top notch, I will call him to complain (just using this as a silly point of reference.) This isn't the first used car that I have purchased, just the first Porsche.

I've got spare MFI pump belt, spare Fan belt, and spare clutch cable. Someone suggested points, plugs and condensor, but if the car is recently tuned (as it is going to be) Mike thought that it would be unnecessary. I am confident that he will do what is necessary to make sure that the car is safe and well sorted.

BTW, here's a quick picture of Kermit resting anxiously, waiting for the open road!!! :D:D Many more of these to come!!

It sounds like you are making the return trip of what I once did when I was young and foolish. Way back in August 2003, I bought a '70 911E that had been sitting for twenty years and drove it from Chicago to Pennsylvania. The trip was, how should I say, memorable.

After the PPI, I had the mechanic look over the car and replace the obvious items. Leaving Chicago at 3:00 p.m. on a beautiful, sunny day, I was prepared for a leisurely trip back to PA. The first couple hundred miles were bliss--a beautiful sunset, the sound of the engine out back in perfect tune. Then came Indiana. Was that the headlights flickering? No couldn't be. I must have just imagined that. And why hasn't the fuel gauge moved off of full in the last two hours? No problem. I'll pull over for the night and start fresh in the morning light. And I can always use the trip odometer to estimate the fuel left.

The next morning it was pouring. Anxious to make up some time, I decided to head out anyway. About an hour in, the electrical gremlins appear in full force. The wipers stop working and the odometer stops registering. Ohh, and the headlights are doing their thing again.

So, for the next thousand miles or so, I have no headlights, no wipers, no fuel gauge and no odometer. Do you think I enjoyed the trip? Absolutely. Would I do it again? Not on a bet. As good as these cars are, they are still over thirty years old. And cars that have been sitting need a lot of run in time to properly sort out.

In the end, all of the electrical problems were minor and a result of oxidation on some electrical contacts. Electrical problems are not easy to diagnose though--especially before they appear. And they could just have easily been on some component that left me stranded. All I kept thinking was trying to find an alternator in the middle of Indiana and explaining to my wife why we were going to have to spend a week in a Motel 6 waiing for parts to arrive.

I understand completely. I wasn't really concerned initially, but now that the "time is upon us." I am getting a bit nervous. I trust Mike, and know that he will go over the car well. I now have found a local shop that has an old geezer like me who has been working on these since he was a youngin and working on his daddy's 356. I have explained the situation.

Judy has always said that our life experiences create memories for us. My hope is that this will be a favorable one. But just as a point of reference, we drove a brand new car to our honeymoon, and lost a waterpump on the way back home. So, these things can happen to new cars, too. Here's hoping for an uneventful and fun trip home.

But I guarantee that you guys will hear all of the gorey details, good or bad.

just came back from my trip to africa and reading your concerns.
from what i just have seen and expirienced, just lay back, listen to the engine and drive your new car home!

i picked my P911E 1970, which i bought over the net in Arizona, up in Bremerhafen Germany and drove the whole way down with three stops to switzerland.
by the way without my wife! ;)
it was adventure pure, just plan easy legs max 3-400 miles and enjoy
the trip. their wont be much conversation anyway during the driving!!! ;)
perhaps visit the once on road, stay over night in that area, they know best
the restaurants and in case you hear some strange noice, they will be
pleased to help or explain.

make lots of pictures and enjoy every minute! over here the winter is coming, the mountain roads are getting covered with snow! not much time left!!

With three daughters and a wife, I certainly know the pain of "shopping."

I am not concerned, really, and we have taken driving trips for the past 20 - 25 years. It is just that usually I know the car pretty well, and have taken care of the anticipated problems. This car, even though it has been "reworked," is an unknown.

I have planned the trip on 2 lane highways all the way from New Jersey down to Deals Gap, and then back up to Louisville. From there, it's going to be a sprint home on the Interstate!!

Tom, I welcome the offer of assistance. If you are serious, PM me your phone number, and I will carry it along - only for emergencies.

Neil: Yes, it looks a bit long in the tooth, doesn't it? That's the standard US height? Boy, no wonder everyone lowers their cars!!!!!

Chris: I would love to send you guys progress pictures during the week, but if I took my laptop along, I have a feeling that it would become missing in action during the trip. Judy isn't an electronic person. I have a hard enough time taking my cell phone and Palm along. But there will be plenty of pix, I promise.

We are planning on driving about 5 - 6 hours a day. Need to spend the requisite time stopping at antique stores along the way, enjoying the next B&B, and seeing the scenery. Hard to do that at night. This year, between trying to wait for the continuously delayed delivery, and some personal issues with the kids and her folks, we haven't taken a vacation yet. Here we gooooooo!!!

My .02 is have Mike shake down the car and then arrange the PPI. Since you have a plane ticket fly out and see it yourself but ship the car back. I wouldn't want to drive my new Viper Green paint job back to Chicago.:(

Expect the worst, and likely nothing will happen, leaving you pleasantly suprised! I driven some real POS cars long distances at high rates of speed. You're alot better of with the frog mobile.

As you know, I just got my '72T back on the road, and I look for every opportunity to drive it. I started off scared to drive it, always listening for some strange noise, or worried what might go wrong. Now, I just drive the snot out of it, and I think the car is finally starting to feel happy (yes, they have feelings). You'll be that much further ahead after 1700 miles. When winter comes, you'll know that you can expect to drive a well sorted out car in the upcoming Spring.

You're doing the right thing going for scenic routes, and enjoying the view and the experience. There's no sense going on a time trial...but be sure you lay into it occasionally.

Oh yeah...make sure you figure out how to work all the heater/vent/fan levers before hitting the road. I finally cracked open the owners manual, and the temperature is alot more pleasant inside.

Jay, Gotta get the Chicago group together to share your T and my E!!!

I know that I am going to spend a couple of hours driving it around CT before we take off on the road. It'll give me a chance to listen to the sounds, get that seat of the pants feel, and allow me to raise any questions that I will want to ask Mike before we take off.

Brian: Don't think that I haven't thought about it. But, honestly, this car is not going to be a garage queen, only a garage princess. So, I do plan on driving it!!! To Indiana for our meet, to the Mississippi for weekends and fall runs down the river, up to Northern Wisconsin. There is no reason to spend the money to truck it to Chicago and then be afraid to take it on the highway. Honestly, I am a bit scared of parking lots, gravel on roads, bugs and birds, and hands of uncareful people that don't understand that rings can scratch paint. But if I don't drive it, how can I really enjoy it??

Some answers to your wife's questions as you drive...
"Yes, the semi can definitely see us down here."
"No, the engine isn't too loud."
"Yes, an old radio sounds like that."
"Yes, you can make toast with the heater."
"No, I'm not going too fast."

And after parking...
"No, it always smells like that."
"Yes, that oil is from my car."

I would make a serious effort to get that ride height corrected. You're not planning on four-wheeling with the thing, are you? It looks higher than US spec, and just about nobody keeps the car at US spec height. Have him measure from the ground to the fender lip front and rear to confirm it.

I'm really happy for you, nevertheless. I'm sure you will get some time in the car before the weather back there turns completely. Larry, I'm not sure if you surf Pelican or not. But I would recommend establishing a "support network" prior to leaving. Between this board, the R Gruppe and Pelican, there're many, many fellow enthusiasts out there ready and willing to help you out in a bind! Get some sort of route established and start a thread on Pelican. I think you'll be surprised to find other 911 owners along the way who will offer their help. Heck, Brian and I just helped a guy from Denmark buy and take delivery of a car last week! -- Curt

Jack: Oh, No, no 4 wheeling, Oh Yes, I will get it lowered. That is going to be a project for next year. I expect that I can work through doing the lowering, kind of a nice project to learn the suspension, but I need to find a shop to do the corner balancing when I'm done. How far would you drive between the change in height and the corner balance?

Zeke: Yes, you did laugh and I think it was you that said "yes April . . . but of what YEAR?" Well, at least I know that the quality of the job is there. I don't have to wonder if he cut corners. I have seen most of the corners as he was doing it.

Curt: Yes, I do surf Pelican, and your suggestion is a good one. I will do just that. We should get the route locked in today, so putting that on Pelican is a good idea.

Paul: The way Judy drinks coffee and diet coke, the rest stop frequency is prolly going to be a factor of significance.

I have not read through all of the responses so I may be repeating something here......

Make sure you have a fire extinguisher!

I nearly lost my car when a fuel line started leaking and covered the driver's side of the engine compartment in fuel. If there is any doubt as to the condition of the fuel lines in your new car I would suggest pulling over after a little while and making sure everything is in order.

No one wants to see any roasted frog legs!

Drive it!

After the 100 mile shake down, most things that will need attention should be discovered. If Mike has driven an old 911 before, he'll know. Have him check the bearings if he's nervous about it. (Try to rock the car with the tires (push and pull on the wheel) If there is play, it could be suspension bushings, strut or bearing, but they can be isolated.

Bring: fan belt and tools to change it (24mm open end wrench and a wooden handle rubber mallot are the most basic to get the job done), 2 cans of fix-a-flat, ign. coil, spark plugs (not critical, but I carry them on trips and they are cheap and won't take up much space), oil, duct tape, gloves, coveralls and some basic metric tools (make sure you have 10mm, 13mm, 15mm, 17mm, 19mm and and crescent).

The car has been sitting, so have Mike drain the tank and put a new filter on the car. Change the oil?

I wouldn't attempt to perform large repairs on the road, so the above should be good enough.

Mike's had the car apart, so he should have checked the heating..if the headers to flapper valve hoses are dried and ripped, put new ones on there! Make sure the wipers work, and he should have checked the headlights, markers and flashers when he reassembled the car.

Have Mike put new brake pads on it. Don't go to Deals Gap with unknown pads. It's a 1/2 hour job if the brakes are in good working condition.

Don't worry about the ride height and CW yet. Get the car home and we'll get you fixed up.

I agree with Tom. Unless you plan to be the speed bump when all the Ricers and Crotch Rockets buzz by, I would bring it home first. There are plenty of roads to enjoy if you just come home...Your wife may be happier with you.

Does Mike do paint and body only? If not, why not give him a list of things to do to the car to prep it for the trip and maybe even the Gap if you have your heart set on it.

Honestly, I know that The Tail of the Dragon is no place for a novice to experiment with high speed road racing, but I am not planning on racing it. We have driven plenty of mountain roads in our other cars while we have travelled the highways and byways of the US (including the road to Hana in HI). I just thought that it would be fun to take some twisties with the car, and we have driven the Smokeys before, just not this particular road.

And we are going to drive it in mid-week, in mid-day, so I figure that it will be a bit quieter than usual. My plan is to be the speed bump in the road. I just thought it would be fun to drive it - just for the experience. Especially after my stellar performance on the Kart track last week, Souk, I know that I am no Mario Andretti - or Chris Streit, either.

I really think that the car should be in good shape for a road trip. It has brand new tires, a new clutch and the entire brake system was new when Mike got it, master cylinder, brake pads, rotors, calipers, and new fuel lines, by the way. Now, it has sat for two years, but those items have been reworked - the fuel lines are new this month.

I know that Mike does engine work as well, but I don't know his skill and experience in suspension work. I do know that he isn't the one to have lower and corner balance the car. And to be honest, now isn't the time to ask Mike to sort out the car. I leave it to my Chicago Buddies to help me with what's needed. There is time to do that.

Thanks for the advice, but I'm not planning on being stupid on this trip. Judy's hypertension won't allow it. :)

By the way, I have read the Dragon's website before. They note that the average death toll on the road is 1.3 people per year ( less than on the Kennedy expy), and there have been no recorded fatalities in a car since 1975. I don't plan on ruining their record.

Deals Gap 2002

Larry part of the bonding process with your 911 is taking it on a long drive. Sure you will spend the first 200 miles straining your ears thinking you hear something wrong, but the rest of the time will be the pure joy of being on an adventure. Below is a post of mine from the Pelican Board that might inspire you a bit (even if it includes me trading a 72E for an '86 Carrera)

"Remember in Mid-October when BK911 wanted to trade his 86 Coupe for an early 911 Targa? He wrote "Anybody want to trade their old 911 for a newer one? You’re in luck! I want to trade an 86 Carrera Coupe for an early 911. I’d prefer a 2.4E Targa, but will consider any 70 – 73 911, Coupe, Targa, T, E or S. Let me know what you have and let’s make a deal!"

Well it so happened I had my screaming yellow 72 E which I had finally sorted out the MFI, but was secretly longing for a coupe. What started as a couple of tenative e-mails ended up being about 50 e-mails and as many pictures being sent back and forth. And now, the rest of the story. For those who don't know, I live in mid-Missouri and BK911 lives in Baltimore Maryland. We agreed that a good place to meet would be in Ohio. Naturally I was a bit worried driving my '72 as I had done a bunch of work on it and hadn't really taken it on a long trip. Anyway, at 5:00 a.m. Saturday morning, with every tool I think I might need to rebuild the car on the side of the road, I set off for Ohio. 8 hours later, with absolutely no problems with the car, BK and I meet at a grade school in the small town of Sommerford. It was cold and spitting sleet! We spent about 2 hours driving and inspecting each other's car and freezing! At 5:00 that evening I headed back to Jefferson City behind the wheel of a Guards Red '86 Coupe and BK heads off to Baltimore in my '72. This has to be the most unusual car purchase I have ever made. Oh, the '72 drove flawlessly and made around 23mpg at 80 miles per hour the entire way! Thoughts on the way home: The '72 is all snarling, in your face, brute acceleration while the '86 was a more quiet refined sports car, where the speed is there, but you don't have that wailing engine telling you how fast you are going, but one look at the speedometer lets you know you are breaking the speed limit by about 30mph or so. Anyway thanks to all for you help with my '72 and I look forward to all your help as I tinker a bit on the '86. Guess I need to also change my signature block."

Having been stranded by several cars while on return trips from purchases....

I would have the following done (didn't read too carefully, so sorry if you have already done this)..

1) New wheel bearings all around

2) New brake lines all around, and bleed and flush the system.

3) New fuel filter...

Bring with in addition:

Spare fuel pump....(really!)
Fuses
Toolkit (include the factory plug wrench, and allen wrench, and fan pulley tool)
Plugs (yes, they can foul out of the box....)
AAAPlus for long distance flatbedding to nearest "friend on the road".

Eric,,, All i would add to that is pack extra fuel line in case the old original stuff cracks and decides to drip gas all over the heat exchangers ... and your set !!!!!!!!!... (definetly an extra fuel pump,,,, agreed ! )

Cornie: Loved the picture. I've got pictures like that in other areas, can't wait to add some from the Dragon.

Tom: First you ply me with pictures and commentary about how I should leave the car Viper Green, remember? And now you threaten me with Pix of flaming cars and Smokey (in the smokeys). Hey, are you on my side?

Eric: Mike is going to repack the front wheel bearings. The rears feel OK, and he's not going to replace them just because. The car has new fuel lines all around (last week). New brake system was put in just before Mike bought the car, so if it isn't frozen from sitting, it should be OK. Got the Toolkit with a fan pully wrench (modern kit brought one along, classic one in the garage) modified 944 jack, flashlight. Need a fuel filter? OK, Fuel pump? You mean an MFI pump, or is there a second fuel pump in the car? It has a relatively new MFI Pump that works just dandy. And, my AAA plus card.

Robert: If a fuel line ruptures and leaks on the heat exchanges, I am going to need more than just a new fuel line!!! That is what my fire extinguisher is for!!!

He fired it up today. Said that the engine sounded quieter than any he has heard in a long time. He's changing the oil twice between now and Friday, so that the oil lines and cooler get flushed OK, and to clean out the engine. Filled the tank with super premium, and poured in some Techron. Long hot drive tomorrow, to burn off the carbon. Mike said he was going to spend the next few days driving the car, fine tuning it, dialing in the MFI, etc. The PPI is set for Friday. I'll let you know how it goes.

Burning off the carbon? How about spending his time doing something useful like adjusting that ride height and your suspension so you're not drifting all over the freeway?

Yeah, I don't want to start sounding like a broken record, but the photograph makes it look like the car is riding higher than US spec. I'm no suspension expert, but I would worry that this could affect the handling of the car. You don't want to be doing your first corner carving in a 911 and not have the suspension at least at a reasonable baseline.

Maybe it's sitting on a jack in the picture?

Mike is very good at engines. He is very good at bodywork and paint. I don't think that suspension work and tuning are his forte. I would rather wait and get it done where I can be part of the process. I don't exactly know what height I want to lower the car to. He admits that the car looks high by even American standards, but we are in the final throes of delivery. I would rather have him spend time working the engine and MFI than the suspension.

Issues of appearance and fine-tuning the handling can always be addressed. I think the important thing here is safety. The car doesn't need to be corner balanced to the N-th degree, but you don't want it to be unstable and/or unpredictable. He should at least get it to 25.5 front 25 rear. If he can do an inch lower than that, all the better.

You don't sound like a broken record. I appreciate your advice and comments. I'll talk to Mike and see what is easily done. He suggested not going too far below the USA height, in order to protect the S spoiler in the front from damage from curbs, driveways and parking lot stops.

OK, I have finally gotten the map together for the trip through Deal's Gap to look like I want it to, so I thought that I would post it. This is about 110 miles round trip, from Robbinsville around and back. Should take the better part of the morning to drive it. Looking forward to the fun. (And YES, I am going to take it slow, real slow!!)

How's your overall trip timing?

I'd get some local miles (a decent loop of a couple of hunfred miles) near Mike before you drive into the sunset....

That way you will get a feel for the car by yourself knowing that any concerns you may have you can take right back to him for reassurance or rectification before you leave...

It might make those miles down to the Dragon more 'relaxing'...

Regardless I'd drive it home......carefully.

I agree with you completely!!!! The plan is to arrive in Westport late Sunday Night. Then we will meet up with Mike first thing Monday morning to pick up the car. The day will be spent visiting antique shops and enjoying the coastline roads in Connecticut before we head out to meet a friend in New Jersey for dinner and the evening, about an hour away from Mike. We'll spend Monday night in NJ, before heading out Tuesday morning.

I suggested to Judy that we spend a couple of hours driving around first thing in the morning - on Monday, so that I can familiarize myself with the car, and be close enough to ask questions if I need to. Your point is well taken. Great Minds . . . . . :D:D thanks

I know my mind isn't great, just seared with the memories of my own little pick-up adventure....

Ok it was not a restoration job, just taking over somebody else's pride and joy.....in Paris, in the evening with a definitive arrangement to be honored the next day in the south of France....at 0800.

I'd drive the car a couple of times before and was pretty confident that there were no show stoppers but still, my first solo drive was at night from Paris to the coast in a single hit...I think every sinlge squeak, bump and knock had my adrenaline kick in again...

In hindsight it was lucky I did have any trouble at all....

After that I had to get the car home from the south of France to London but that's another story (involving a drunk Frenchman pissing in the middle of the road..)

If I recall correctly, you have NEVER driven an early 911, let alone Kermit. This will be an event all the way around for you.
No one else seems to have mentioned this yet. Perhaps it goes without saying but while driving you should keep an eye on your oil pressure and oil temp gauges. Oil pressure should be above 80psi until the car warms up. After engine temp reaches 180 or more, the pressure should drop off to appr. 60psi while at 4,000 rev's. At red lights or stop signs, oil pressure will drop down to 20psi or below. This is normal.
With the cooler weather in the n'east, your oil temp should be around 180-200. Make sure to let the car up warm before pushing the rev's above 4,000.
You may also want to let Mike the painter/mechanic know that the Porsche community is well aware of your venture and that your favourable or unfavourable experience could have a significant effect upon his reputation and future business prospects.

Silver: I think that everyone that is "car-aware" knows every squeak and knock in their cars. It is the unfamiliar sounds that raise our attention. That unfamiliarity with Kermit is something that raises caution in my brain. I don't know what he sounds like. That first few hours will be spent driving around nearby, and listening and feeling. Getting used to the shift lever, the pedals, the steering wheel. Part of the adventure.

Gruen: You are very right!!! :eek: :D I haven't driven an early 911 before. I need to learn about the oil pressure, (thanks for the lesson) and how to measure the oil level. Have seen too many posts on Pelican about the newbie that loaded up his car with oil after he measured it with the engine off!!! :rolleyes:

Mike is well aware of my "visibility" here and on Pelican. I think that the quality of his work has been largely his own obsessiveness, but also my being "out there." I have posted pix and my story here and on Pelican. I am putting together a web page that needs to be pared down from the current "War and Peace" length. People both here and on Pelican have asked me for Mike's number. Mike knows that, and is expecting to use it as a reference. I don't need to threaten him - he's doing the right thing, because it is the right thing. He said to me yesterday, "do you think that I spent the hundreds of hours working on the car, and talking to you on the phone to leave something out at this late stage?"

No, I certainly don't think so. The final PPI is just an independent confirmation of the work and condition of the car. (BTW, I found out yesterday that one of the PPI Shop's customers just gave Mike an engine to rebuild for a racing car he owns.) Mike told me yesterday that the clock works (surprise, surprise) and the radio sounds pretty good. The engine is the quietest he has heard in a long time - clatters, clunks, and chain chatter. I'm hoping for just good news on Friday (Geez, that's tomorrow) and a Great Day in the Mornin' on Monday.

:edit: BTW, yesterday, Hagerty bound my insurance policy. $25,000 stated value, no deductible collision (heaven forbid) and comprehensive, 100/300 liability for $224 annually, with a 5K stated annual mileage.

The seats arrived yesterday afternoon from Autos Intl, and they will be installed this weekend. Getting really close. Tomorrow night we fly to New York. Judy is still looking for B&B's. "Oh, that one isn't too far away, it's only an inch away on the map." :D:D

I got the results on the PPI from Spencer Cox at Speedsport Tuning. Good news and bad news. He said that the paint, body work, and interior work was among the best that he has seen. He said that I was stealing the car from Mike for what I paid for it. The trunk is immaculate, the interior is like new, the paint looks fantastic, the lights are outstanding - I guess he means clarity of the lenses and lack of scratches. Spencer said that the underside hadn't been detailed, but I knew that. Didn't pay for that to be done.

Then we get to the bad part.

The brake system, which was supposed to be brand new just before Mike bought the car - the master cylinder is leaking, and the front brake pads are gone. Mike is replacing the master cylinder and replacing the front brake pads. Ok, good.

He said that there was an oil leak at the thermostat housing line, but he gave Mike a new fitting to replace that one. OK, good. He said that the cam chain housings are leaking a bit, but not very much. Not unusual for an early car.

Leakdown measurements

1 -- 8%
2 -- 22%
3 -- 5%
4 -- 4%
5 -- 1%
6 -- 20%

Not good. I had asked him to also do a compression test, but I guess that he didn't. He said that the car would need a top end sometime soon. It seems that someone adjusted the valves and didn't do it right, because the intake valves are burned on cylinders 2 and 6. This is certainly an expenditure that I wasn't planning on making. He said that the car pulled strong, and ran fine, but that this was in the offing. If I was lucky, it would be 3 - 5 years, if I was unlucky, it would be 1 year.

He said that there was some seepage at the transmission, and some gear noise, but it wasn't bad. If the transmission was just rebuilt, why should there be gear noise and seepage? Obviously not done as well as it might have been.

Wheel bearings. Front bearing needs adjustment (Mike is going to repack them), and the Left rear bearing is a bit loose. They tried to tighten it a bit.

End result. I am really pleased with the physical appearance of the car. I am not happy with the mechanical condition. What I should have done was had someone do this level of PPI before I decided to buy the car. Having Mike do it, and report to me was not really the best approach. What was I thinking? I don't believe that he tried to deceive me, only that an independent view is always the best. He is making good on the brakes and master cylinder. I just need to plan on some engine work down the road.

Looking back, would I have bought this car had I known that the engine needed this? Maybe not. But I now have a car with a pristine body. It will take a bit of mechanical work down the road to get it "right." But it's not a new car. I guess that I knew that. Everyone had said, "don't spend your last $ buying the car, you will need $3 - $5K to take care of things after you get it." So true.

I have made a full disclosure to Judy - she gave me this sick smile. Here's hoping that the trip works out OK. You know that I will make a full report, complete with Pictures.

I, for one, can conceivably help get this show started...

As I recall, Larry is in Deerfield, correct? I have relatives in Northbrook - I can commute (no need for me to impose on Larry & family). I would be up for helping with the "laundry": This would be getting engine out of the car, dismantling, and getting the right pieces to the right people...like CE, out here in Bodfish, CA

Then, when the right pieces are back in Larry's hands, the rest of you guys can come screw it back together...

This would be fun for me, as I also get to see some family members on their own turf (which is a seriously rare occasion).

Just some thoughts...let's demonstrate what a community we 911 guys (registered members or not) really are...:cool:

Before you panic too much about the engine, I have a question. I have a vaugue recollection of a picture of your engine out with the heads off. how did they look? I am thinking a possible bit of carbon. An italian tuneup may fix your problem.

If not, negotiate for the cost of a top-end rebuild and move on. Fixing mechanical problems, while costing $$ have the satifaction of knowing you only do it once every 50-100k miles. It is not like body/cpometics that seem to need endless touchups.

You have a very nice car. Go enjoy it.

FWIW worth, I drove my car for almost two years needing a top end. I finally got the $$ to get it done but no lasting harm seems to have resulted.

You're right, there was NO mechanical work scheduled, planned, or paid for on this car. This was intended to be a bare metal repaint. It became much more of a restoration (of the body). I believe that Mike is an honest broker in this deal. I don't believe that he sold me a bill of goods. He knows that I am very visible on the boards, and he isn't dumb. He just repacked the front wheels - no charge, and he just put new brakes on the front - no charge, and he just put a new master cylinder in it - no charge. And he has done a great job on this car, metalwork and paint. You Midwest guys will see it in a few weeks, and you can speak honestly after that.

I think that I have just run into a bit of bad luck here. Call me naive, but I don't think I've been duped.

Italian Tuneup == Driving the car at high rpms for a while to clear the carbon off of the valves.

If the the car had a recent top end (documented) then I am still thinking to leakdown is telling you a problem that ranges from carbon (good outcome) to a overrev and bent valves (bad outcome). The fact the guy doing the PPI is telling you that this is an issue needing to be adressed in the future but is still ok to drive has me leaning to carbon, not bent valves.

As I said above, I drove my car for with worn valves and mucho smoke for almost two years (2-400 miles/quart). During this time, I autocrossed it once a month (spring/sumer/fall) and went on weekend trips. In the end, I needed to replace all of my valves due to excessive wearm in addtion to the usual stuff in a top end.

Bottom line, if the car is as represented, make your best deal and move on.

Thanks for the comments. The deal is done. I bought this car last August, and the body work and paint were part of the total deal. Same with the other items. There is no negotiation at this point. He never represented the engine as new or tight. He gave me numbers and let me make my own decision.

The only decision now is - will the car get me from CT to Chicago on this trip, or do I need to truck it back. Your comment leads me to believe that these issues won't stop me from driving.

Ultimately it is your call how to proceed. Personally, I would ask the PPI Mech his thoughts and decide as you feel best. Make sure he understands your concern on potential valve damage and press him a bit on how he knows it is ok (if that is what he said).

However it turns out, welcome to the adventure!

If you decide to drive, I would think rpms at 4-5k should be adequate but try (ha-ha) to stay away from red-line (I know I have a hard time when I am at a lace where it is possible :))

Well, Frank, Harry, Paul, I guess the decision is up to me. I do plan on stopping by the shop that did the PPI. I was just going to go to glad-hand, but now I have a mission. I feel very positive about the car, and our trip. If worst comes to worst, I will have to shuffle and dance. But I'll deal with that when it comes.

In the meantime, think positive thoughts - even you Frank - and I will give you guys a complete update when I return. Catching a plane tomorrow at 7:00 PM, first visit with Kermit at about 8:00 AM the next morning.

BTW - after completing your Italian Tune Up on the Dragon, go in for a simple valve timing adjustment when you do your next oil change. It's only about 2 hrs of labor for a knowledgeable wrench. He'll be able to tell you how worn the valves are as well.

When you ship your alternator, include your voltage regulator as well. Loren will check it out, and adjust it for proper voltage output...

Larry, sounds like a great trip (despite the electrical problems). I hope our weather here in NC clears up for you, It's wet and cloudy around Charlotte. The Blue Ridge Parkway and Deal's Gap can be a little tough if the fog is thick and they say it's been kind of foggy in the mountains. It may keep some of the bike trafic down though. Enjoy yourself and check out the Cherhola (sp?) Parkway too while you're there.

Good advice Tom! Larry, the first rains or fog/drizzle can cause the oil drips of the summer to rise atop a thin layer of moisture, making road surfaces slicker that cat caca...exercise due caution!

I couldn't find the BG - 44K in the towns we drove through in TN, but I bought some Lucas Oil Upper Cylinder Lubricant. I thought it really worked great!!! Also looked for the BG stuff in Chicago today at Murrays Discount Auto Parts. None there, either, so I bought a few more bottles of the Lucas stuff to put in from time to time.

The new owner was a guy from Detroit, who bought it for his son. I think Curt knows who he is, or has met him. I have not seen it reappear for sale since, nor have i seen a new member pipe up with this car. So perhaps not, Peter.
I liked this car a lot, and Larry is a good guy. Hopefully we will hear back from him soon, with a new project.

Been a loooong time

Larry Sold Kermit in 2007 and has moved on.

Last I heard (2012) he had a 996 Turbo.
