Did the front fuse panels originally have a grey fiberboard or cardboard cover? It seems to me I have seen this item in pictures but my car (1972) hasn't one and my parts book doesn't show one either. I don't have a picture at hand, but the latest Excellence has a picture of it in the article about the restored RS.
my 71 has a gray (only outside) "cardboard" cover.
there was recently one for sale on ebay.com

Stoddard has them for sale, $60, as advertised on page 37 of the Feb. 2007 issue of Excellence. Historically these have been hard to find, so this ad surprised me when I saw it. The battery straps advertised are not seen often either.
My car still has one, I would call it hardboard over cardboard since it is not flimsy or corrogated, though it does bend to make an arc over the fuse panels, and the outside is silver/grey. There is a clip that hangs midway down to support the hose to the charcoal canister, at least on MFI cars (not sure about carb'd).

Eagle Day (www.eagleday.com) sells a wiring clip very similar to the clip on the fuse shield.

Resurrecting this thread because I am finally getting around to the small details of my front compartment on my '72 S. The link in the thread with photos is not working, so can someone please post a photo of how the grey cardboard fuse cover attaches to the clip shown above by the front fuse panel or at least describe where the clip goes that holds the cover over the fuse panel? There was piece of Velcro holding mine on when I got got the car and that can't be right. Thanks.

No. The cardboard cover’s long edge slip into the metal slot on rear side of the fuse panel. The clips only purpose is to hold the hose. RobQuote:

these images are from an extremely low mileage un-restored car....It was on the registry, and there are some here that know its history, etc.
it was a transparent tube that goes thru the clip.
and for more trouble...see the cardboard on top of the battery....first and only i have ever seen.

I believe that the tube that is in the clip comes from the brake fluid reservoir and goes to the front bulkhead. I have also seen some cars which vent the LF fender vapor canister through this clip but I do not believe that this is correct. Interested in other comments.
Lot of confusion here re: what goes through the clip on the cardboard cover. Many “low mileage” cars with various tubes placed there. My research informs that the small wrapped cannister hose is the one. Unfortunately the 700 mile 911S car had the cardboard removed so I know of no unadulterated car for reference.
See this image from PET, #14 is the clip.
The clip goes in the centre hole and holds the hose per the picture above. The cardboard itself is held against the side of the battery box and the bracket on the other side.
The clip is used to hold part "22" in the PET diagram above. "22" goes to different places, depending on year of car and market.
In earlier cars, before the charcoal canister, it goes straight overboard behind the washer pump through a hole in the body. This is also the case for RoW cars into later years.
Not so sure about that brake fluid overflow hose going there. Here is the 700 mile car, with authentic white ziplocks holding that tube. Looks to be original placement.
Pre 1970 (before the 700 mile S), brake reservoir overflow went into "12" in your diagram. It's "49" in the 65-69 PET diagram (below).Quote:

Yes, 51 goes through the clip then then behind the battery hold down latch then out through a grommeted hole. Like the blue car in post 14 which has btw Italian park/directional lights.

One from a less than 50kmiles model year 72 ROW T carburettor version. RHD in this case but think that side of wheel is not relevant as same for ROW afaik bit different for North America with that market "extra gubbins".
Context: I was taking photo of the 72 screwdriver but happened to use the fiberboard panel as a background. It has a clip ( this is the reverse) and not shown does have a clear tube in the clip when back in proper place. Like Steve said when in situ was as post no 14

More silver than grey. Not with my car at present but board ( not screwdriver) similar to model year 73 RS from memory.

I was reading back on other posts and was about to edit my post to say I agree it was as BEH911 also said earlier ...but you beat me to it :)
Even closer shot below showing the detailed colour/finish of the inside ( hidden side). Silver colour but the fibre board on reverse not smooth, visually a weave effect under silver surface finish from material used. Don't recall the build date of the car and it is not mine so in fairness to owner won't publish it's vin on www but it had original then new(ish) to ROW H4 so it was built after March 72 and oil flap so before model year 73

The clip is for a hose found on all '69's and European cars after '69 . It comes from Y # 49 in the diagram beh911 posted . It is not on cars with the charcoal canister .
Just to clarify...For the 1970 USA cars, the clip is not used. Is that correct?
On my 70 it’s clear to me that the board material for the fuse cover is the same as was used to make the parcel shelf’s and the early full panel door cards.
When I purchased my car from a long sleep, the board was a bit beat up but, there was no
Clip present and it didn’t appear that one had been installed. That original card material scratches pretty easily.
For comparison to my earlier post #25 this is a closeup showing the colour and material one on my first series RS; as stated pretty similar to the 72T I pictured. It is similar silver hue in reality although artefact of photo and lighting today makes it seem more dull and light grey.

Similarity is unsurprising as they were buit the same calendar year and the fibreboard part is generic across kodels. Both the T and the RS have a clip and clear tube as discussed -- correct with them being ROW specification
Current cardboard cover is much thinner than the original ones. Or the old ones have absorbed so much moisture over 50 yrs..

This is fantastic, it was bugging me to no end trying to figure this out! Couldn't even figure out if I needed therapy to get over it or because of it...
So, if I get it, a RoW 1972 would not have a charcoal canister?
I saw in one diagram a hose that I think connects to the nipple on the back of the engine tin that goes to ventilate the charcoal canister, was this actually used? Where did such a hose run through to get to the front (I never saw it in photos of the center tunnel).
I'm going to start by making one from Chuck's diagram (thanks!) while I figure out what to do. Maybe Cees will accept to part with the second example, for once shipping will be on this side of the world!

I did the same as Chuck, except I used thermoform plastic as used to make holsters, which I sourced at Tandy Leather. Painted it silver. Way more durable than the cardboard version.
