Let the offseason make over begin! the 15x10 Minilites came in..

Hi Guys-
I have been contemplating making my car into a 911 ST tribute race car for about 6 years. I finally pulled the trigger and ordered all the parts.

I ordered the steel ST rear flares from Dave at TRE. Those should be here in a couple weeks. I cant wait to see them. New fiberglass ST front fenders, and "S" bumper are on the way. The 15x10 Minilites came in (Superlite GTR's) I need to paint them or powdercoat them silver (it was Superlights last set of two so I had to take the gunmetal color). Anyone have good results with a rattle can color?
I ordered two new Euro chrome H4 headlight assemblies OEM for $180 each which I think is a steal. Also new horn grills and euro turn signal lenses up front.
I have a majority of the stuff to fab a center fill (Blau 100mm cap and short neck, collector) I really need to find a longer neck to bring it up to the hood level (Any hints?)- I will be welding this on to my Fuel Safe cell.
Once I get all the bodywork done, a full paint job is in order. I'm keeping the same color with some appropriate ST vintage graphics.

These mods will put me up in A production with the Corvettes & Mustangs which will be fun.

I'll post some pic's of the progress- This will be a full race ST- I can't wait to feel the grip difference with the wider wheels and tires.

Don't paint the holes on the superlites... The clearance between them and the wheel studs is *minimal* as it is!

You don't need a longer neck. Use 4" dia. exhaust tubing and then cut & fit just the top of the short Blau neck piece you already have on top to match the angle of the hood. See photo of the way I did mine....it works perfectly.

I know. I actually had a pair of carbon rear ST flares. After much debate, I decided to go steel and fork over the $. You can never trust the epoxy on the fiberglass (or Carbon) If it starts to delaminate, crack, or bubble I would need a new paintjob. Plus steel is more sexy for this vintage race car :)

Not to mention the last corner balance had me at 1828 pounds with 1 gallon of fuel and 14qts of oil :)

I will be upgrading to 31mm rear hollow torsion bars (From 30mm solid) to lessen the effect of the heavier wheels.
Gotta cut weight where you can.

I don't mean to belabor the obvious, but if your gascap has the rib already attached, make sure you mark the stub of you Blau short tube showing the postion of the rib, so that when you cut the short tube at an angle and locate it on your stainless tubing for welding, the rib is properly positioned front to rear with the cap fully locked in place, so that it is parallel to the long axis of the car.

If the rib is not installed yet, ....well, then it really doesn't matter where the lugs of the short tube wind up.

Please don't ask why I find it necessary to emphasize this point.

Yep- Good call. I was just going to add the rib last after everything is fab'd up.

I just received the wheels back from the powdercoaters. They turned out great.

I also removed all of the front pieces and fitted the new passenger fender. Getty fiberglass trumps GT Racing fiberglass by miles.

I'm still waiting for the rear steel ST flares from TRE (Via Germany). My car really cant wait to see those-

..........wheels came out perfect...much better. What color did you use?....

Fronts are going to be 15x8 Fuchs (RSR Finish)

It has been a productive day. The fenders are on and look great. I still need to work on the front bumper to make it fit a little better- and wait for the bumper trim piece.
I then need to slot the middle of the"S" bumper so my oil cooler can get some air (Which is always good). I am debating whether to cut 1/2 inch slats (drilling the tops and bottoms to have them rounded) or just cut out a rectangle then wire mesh it. Hmmmm not sure on that one.

Then it will be on to test fit the new H4 headlights, turn signals and hood latches.

I think the 8s are a good choice. I have 9' minilites on the front and the 270/45/15 TB15s are a bit close. I'll probably switch the tires to the Fuch 8s since the offset is different. It seems alot of the teams were running that version anyhow back in the day.

Looks great. What size tires are you running?

Believe it or not I'm running tires that would be considered quite small for a widebody. 205/55 front and 225/50 rear. This is my street setup and is very fun!

The front wheels have no spacers. The rears have a 1 or 1.5" spacer (I forget which).

What wheel size is on the rear?

I plan on running 245/50 on the front 15x8's and 275/50 on the 15x10's (Hoosier race tires)

I'm wondering if the 245's will be too big for the fronts

9x15's on the rear.

I'm pretty sure you'll be fine with 245/50's on the front 8x15 wheels. I've run 255/40/17 up front on 9x17 wheels no problem. Also 245/45/16's up front on 9x16 Fuchs no problem.

Edit: My front fenders are Getty ST/RSR fiberglass fenders. I'm pretty sure these are the same ones you have.

Still waiting on the ST rear flares.....Grrr. They have "Shipped". It has been holding me up.

I finished test fitting everything -headlights/911R hinges/turnsignals etc. I had to do alot of forming and fabricating for the headlights to fit properly (and secure) in the Fiberglass buckets.

I'm taking some 911R quarter windows to a plastic forming company to see if they car make a run for me. At this time there is no one in the US making the rear quarter windows anymore.

Once the flares get here, I need to weld them on- check the tire/wheel clearance- then start stripping the car for paint :)

I’ve seen Chad race his ‘blue car’ and he just might be building one of the FASTEST, if not THE fastest ST tribute cars in the States….

He goes 1:29's to low 1:30's on the BIG track at Willow.... :eek:
(I go low 1:40's with a 2.7 and a duck tail...:o)

Of course alot has to do with how well Chad drives...... :)

Too bad Steve Earl doesn’t post lap times for the ‘Historics’ … but I would think the closest comparable car, with the same relative body configuration and engine size, I’ve seen ‘go fast’ on the track would be Jurgen Barth driving the Larrousse ‘Tour de France’ car at Monterey.

I'd love to hear/see the details of what you did to get the headlights to safely fit the fiberglass buckets.

I ran into the same problem and am still not happy with the fit. I've thought about cutting out the fiberglass buckets and bonding in complete OEM steel buckets...or using the OEM steel upper lip somehow attached to the fiberglass buckets.

Chuck- Stop.... you are making my head big..... I hope I can live up to your words somehow. I just can't wait to feel the difference in grip with wider tires/wheels. My car will be a full blown racing 911ST Tribute- Like they all should be. My best time at the WS big track is a 1:32.... (after drinking 4 Redbulls;)) I wish it was a 1:29- that would be flying and I probably would need a rear wing of some sort... you can only turn left so much going around turn 8 and 9 without any aerodynamics.

Now to the headlights-
I did not do anything too crazy. I did think about the steel buckets too before attempting what I did. With my Getty fenders, the bucket portion where the headlights sit were too big for the chrome rings to fit over. I'm not sure if they do this on purpose, but I'm glad they did. It made it easier to file down the ends of the buckets to the perfect size so that the chrome ring "pops" on with some force (Note: Rubber hammer on hood :rolleyes:). I kept the fiberglass top lip but reshaped it a little. I then fab'd up some tabs on the bottom (I saw this from a post on pelican), bolted them to the buckets so the bottom screw lined up perfectly from the headlight ring. I used a 2 inch hole saw to cut part of the bottom of the bucket out so I could attach a nylock and washers from the inside to secure it down even more. It may be overkill, but I may even attach a "safety" ziptie to the top of the headlight (from the inside so you do not see it), by drilling a small hole in the bucket, then tighten the ziptie from the wheel well once everything is tightened down. I'm making sure those suckers are not going to move one bit. They are extremely secure the way I have them now, but you never know what happens when you are racing at 130/140mph, jumping curbs...backwards :D.

I'll shoot some pics without the headlights on so you can see.

Chad, the car is looking great. Will the 10x15 wheels be a tight fit under the rear flares? How does the back spacing on those wheels compare to fuch 9x15's?

Also, who's front bumper are you using? Getty? How is the quality and fit?

Thanks- Yes, it will be close but the offset is 26mm (close to a 7x15 Fuch- 23mm) so the majority of the wheel will go out towards the flare. I ran 7x15 with 225's and 1/2 inch spacer before so I feel confident that it should be OK with the 275 tires. The ST flare should have more than 3 inches outward "flare". If I run into problems, I will massage it some more before painting. (Attached is a flare chart picture for reference)

As far as fiberglass. Getty is light years ahead of GT Racing. Unfortunately, Getty does not make the 9" "S" front bumper that the ST's used. I had to order it from GT racing and I am not impressed at all with the fit or finish. It is just plain crap. Getty Fenders and doors overall quality/fit gets an A+.

That is interesting. I have a set of fuch centered BBS three piece wheels that are 10x16's that are only 1/4 inch less backspacing than a fuch 9x15. I bet it would work under an ST rear flare.

I got my 9" "S" front bumper from Dave at TRE and the quality is pretty good - no problems with fitment.

After a month and a half- The rear flares were finally delivered. Let the real fun begin!

Kaefer: You have a normal RS rear bumper right? Did you have to do any magic to the bumper to get it to match well with the flares?

It's a tight fit, but it looks like I can make it work. This is just a mock up with the 275/50 tires on the 10x15's- The "old" flares are still under there so the tires are sitting on the lip. It should sit lower and "in" more. I'll have a better idea once I cut the "old" fenders out. I'll roll the fender lips to get a little more clearance. I'm getting really excited now since everything is coming together finally.

Actually my rear bumper is a RSR bumper.

My rear flares started life as turbo flares that I reshaped a bit (rolled, pulled, and sliced in no particular order).

I had no problems mating my rear bumper to the flares.

Thanks guys. I love all the help. I might be able to swing the RS rear bumper- not sure yet until the flares are on. The ST flares are not as big as the RSR/turbo- So I'm gonna have to see if I can make the RS bumper look right.

Hi John,

There is a great thread on Pelicanparts. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...hs-finish.html . I followed what those guys did. I beadblasted the entire wheel to get the right RSR texture. I then painted them with a Dull Aluminum metallic paint, then clearcoated them. No polished lip at all- Looks great. I then taped up the wheel and painted the black background with a Satin Black paint. That was it. They really, really look good. I think my dad wants me to do his wheels now.

I took the flares into the body shop/fabricator today. The flares metal is a thinner gauge. You really need to have a good welder not warp the metal while welding. He did not think they were handmade either but rather pressed. There is a definite area where the stretch marks are due to the use of a press, not an English Wheel. Plus they are painted so you can't see the wheel marks. *Shrug* what do I know? He is going to remove some of the paint to see if they are in fact "Handmade" out of curiosity. The gauge of the metal on the flare is not the same as the body. I would like to have the same gauge metal on the tub. Plus it is a stronger flare. I may have him make me a set of flares out of the 18 gauge by using the thinner gauge flares as a template. He has all the metal working equipment to make them (They do look good- just thin)....He took one look at them and said "I could of made you those" LOL.The damn $lippery $lope!

That is very interesting Chad, I would be interested in a reasonably priced pair of "correct" steel ST flares. BTW your car looks great. :)

I've had NOS ST flair at no less than 5 panel makers that said "I can do that, no problem". So far no panels and still waiting three years later!!! They are harder to do than then they look like. Hope your guy can do them. If he can I may be able to get the factory one to have a copy made.

Thanks Harvey. I hear you. I have seen some of the work he has done on other cars. The fabrication on those car's fenders were amazing. He started with flat 18 guage metal. This guy reminds me of Jesse James from West Coast Choppers. I would not want to piss him off...lol.
He is making the templates right now for the ST flares. He said if I did not like them, he would not charge me a dime. Fair enough. His normal business has slowed so he may be over eager. I told him if the flares are really good (and cost effective) he would have to make more... (Hence the templates he is making). He is very confident which is good. Anyone need 2.8 RSR flares? :)
I'll keep everyone updated. My car goes in there on Thursday or Friday for some fabrication/mockups.

FYI- The guy hammered the dish out in less than 10min from flat metal. From the start of hammering to finish weld ......20min. All from a picture I brought in. Amazing.

I remember that these Blau caps are "self venting"- Is that correct?

I'm also going ahead with the 18 gauge handmade ST fenders. The stamped "handmade" ones are just too thin for my liking. I have been racing long enough to know what comes flying off of race tires, and do not want to ruin a paintjob from dent/dings because of thin metal. If anyone is interested in a truly handmade set of rear ST flares shoot me a PM. The more interest, The more he will make. He is using the German Flares as the template -an Expensive $2200-$2300 template! My loss, your gain. I should have a full ST flare by tomorrow.

Hey Chad...

I know what you mean by the stuff being thrown by the sticky tires. Nice little dents or "stars" start showing up on the fenders from the inside.

The solution is to glue 3/8 or 1/2" closed cell foam up inside the fenders.

After receiving the first "star" at Willow in my freshly restored 356, I installed the foam, and never had another dent in the next three years of racing that car.

It works!

Blau furnishes both types of 100mm dia. caps. Turn it over and on the underside you will find either ....."mit Luftung", which translates to with venting, or it'll say "Ohne Luftung"....which means not vented

The centerfill is all welded up and ready for some paint.

They just started shaping the flares when I was there. It is amazing what these guys can do with all these metalshop tools. I have a video of them putting the flange on the fender (the first thing they did before starting to shape it)

I was very lucky to find one in my backyard JP- Here is a teaser pic (remember these are 15x10's). Mock up trail fitting- The metal tube is used to make sure the torsion tube and torsion bar line up.
I'll load some more in the next few days. I have been traveling for work.

Here are a few more pictures. These flares are amazing works of art and truly handmade. I'll pick her up on Friday or Saturday to take it back to my garage. Then it is time for me to start stripping it for paint. It should be painted in the next couple of weeks.

Haha- He already knows. We have been exchanging emails about the "Makeover". He is all pumped for another go in the car. My dad and I went to Laguna ALMS and chatted with him for a bit. Its pretty cool when all the fans are on the grid surrounding all the cars/drivers before the race, and he walks through crowd to shake your hand and chat. I may have to put his name on the car too- He actually did race it. The car has Porsche Racing History :)

Patrick Long is a great guy. I have seen him 4 times at Long Beach and just recently at Laguna Seca. He remembers me and my Dad each time. It is cool that we are both from the same town and know the best roads around the area.

I do not know how he can be so accomodating to fans with all that attention, then go out and drive an intense endurance race against BMW, Ferrari, Corvette and win.

Make sure he knows that there are oil coolers and stuff up there that is not good to get damaged. ;)

Glad to see this project moving along - can't wait to see it.
I also think it's pretty cool you were able to get Long in the car at Willow Springs...and become friends. That's great. :cool:

I would caution you - however - before you go and stick his name on the car (I wouldn't blame you at all for doing that...) make Absolutely Certain that it's cool with Long's handlers (contract weenies, legals, etc @ Porsche) before doing so. I sincerely doubt Long would even care if his name's on the car or not, but his management team may take exception to it.
I guess there's really two ways of doing this: go ahead put it on there and beg forgiveness should there be an issue. Or, go through all the wickets and make sure no one has any heartburn over it. :D

Just some thoughts, Chad...good luck with it and hopefuly we'll see you trackside soon.

What size is the tank in the 911ST? ;)

The Enduro is usally in March or April. I still have the same tank- but with a much bigger fuel neck/centerfill now. If I fill it to the top it would probably be an extra gallon or so. I would love to get a 15 gallon though to be safe.

Looking good, Chad! So no racing stripes this time around, or are you going to do them in vinyl?

Thanks! The car is coming together fast.
I'm planning on doing vinyl. I did this on the previous paint job and it turned out great.

Now the dilemma- What to do, what to do??? I want vintage livery of course. My vinyl guy can replicate the TDF 911 ST graphics. The stripes/swirls would be silver with black outline from the car below, with appropriate vintage decals (Bosch, Ferodo etc).

I welcome any other suggestions. I have to wait about another 3 weeks for the paint to cure before I start installing any graphics.

Update:

She is almost all done. I have been too busy working on two other race cars to finish my own.

Things to do:
1. Install front rubber bumper seal (Any ideas to supplement the adhesive tape on the seal so it can handle some racing abuse? I'm thinking just using some clear silicon)

2. Finish final assembly on mounting front turn signals/horn grills

3. Install front rubber hood latches

4. Install Bob Tilton's Porsche Graphics (Silver Metallic). They look great Bob!

5. Corner Balance/alignment

6. Tow to Buttonwillow Raceway for a test day, set up new suspension and see what this baby can do.

Damn that thing looks like it wants to start a fight - absolutely mean! Door handles need to be photo'd and added to satanic details thread.

Already got them last year.

Picture update!!!!! About 93% done. Check out the new graphics. I am planning on just going old school, black and white meatballs/numbers with a few period correct decals later.

I need to mount the horn grills, corner balance, then have fun tweaking the suspension at a test day.

I would throw some Cibie replicas on if they did not cause so much drag :)

Thanks everyone. I like the clean look too, but it is still a race car. No street driving for this monster. I still have to put the numbers on. It will be vintage correct.

I know the sight of the first rock chips will hurt, but I know that the car will be happy doing what it was meant to do...RACE :) . Not to mention the blast I always have.

Now I'm thinking of having a Clear Bra installed :p

Officially all done!

I terrorized the neighborhood by "driving" around with the open exhaust.

I'm hoping to have her on the track Dec 3rd for a test day to sort out the new suspension.

No, at Buttonwillow. I have a LeMons race there that weekend with our BMazdaW's :) As long as they do a separate run group for race cars and LeMon cars like last time. No way I'm taking the 911 out there in the same session as the LeMon cars......Way too risky with all those POS cars and beginners running around.

I received some more period correct decals. I have been tweaking them to make them look right. The Bilstein decal is drop dead gorgeous. I have a Cibie decal that I nailed down, but I'm just not sure if I should throw it on if I don't have Cibies mounted. Hmmmm.

I'll get some action shots this weekend at the track.

I have been getting some questions on the decals. I may offer them for sale after a few tweaks. I could not find what I wanted, so I made them up.
Here are some more I did for fun.

Lookin' good, Chad. Do you have any POC events at Willow Springs or Fontana scheduled for the 2011 season? I will likely be spectating at most of the Willow Springs club race/time trial days and would love to see the car in person after its transformation. :)

I agree with Karl's comment....your car is DROP DEAD GEORGEOUS! It's a great color, and the execution of the whole project is top drawer...almost too nice for a track dedicated car. It will be interesting to see your times at Big Willow with the wider rear set up. It is always satisfying to run a car that you have built yourself, and better because you know it inside out. It makes the tuning easier, and there is a higher confidence level sooner I think. The decals look great too. Looking forward to seeing some pics of track events.

Flieger- I might be going for the championship with VARA or HSR. Not sure yet. I want to try and do a few POC races, I had so much fun out there.

Thanks Gib- I agree, it's probably too nice to race but f%^$ it. you only live once. :) We have to get your car on the track. Better yet, both at the same time for photos.

Here it is all loaded up itching to get on the track. I have to be careful loading it because it is W-I-D-E. The shake down is tomorrow. I have alot of new things to get use to.

Maiden Voyage Track report:

It was a great day yesterday. Grip is amazing (once tires are heated up). I was mad because the Track managment chose at the last minute to change directions. They changed it so we were running the opposite way than we normally race. I have no idea what a good lap time is this direction. It was like I had to learn a new track, with a new car. I was hoping to compare apples to apples with lap times from my previous races. My best lap yesterday was a 2:07 (BW#13 CCW), but I was not pushing it fully. The track had mud and lakes all around from all the storms. I did not want to push it and go surfing, get stuck, or worse- flip. I had a minor off on the 2nd lap, I got a little impatient. Note to self: The huge tires need more time to heat up when it is 42 degrees outside.:o My first spin in 6 years- I'm still mad at myself.

Its always a good day when you do not have to open the toolbox, or put the car on jackstands. Everything worked well. No rubbing of the rear tires on the fenders! The suspension seemed really good with the changes I made. I might tighten the front bar one notch before the next test day.

The car looks good but I am sure it will look (and drive) even better when the weather brightens up. :)

Chad...that is one heck of a great looking car.
The color, graphics, decals, flare/wheel package.
It just all works together so well.
I'm sure an incredibly fun car to drive on the track as well.....lightwt with great power.

Thanks everyone. I love it too, as you can tell with all the pictures and posts. Here is a little video. I have never driven the track this direction. I had to learn it all over. Notice all the Lakes and Mud around the track? I was being really careful! One car got stuck in 2 feet of mud and water.
