The most famous 911S in the world

It's a rainy Sunday morning here in my little corner of the world. I'm bored, still in my bathrobe, and don't feel like going down to the garage yet to get some real work done. So let's have some fun.

Over in another thread, one of our senior members wrote that he believes the McQueen Le Mans car to be "the most famous 911S in the world."

So, as this is the 911S registry, I ask: Gentlemen, which do you think is the most famous 911S in the world? Extra points awarded for explaining why. Extra-extra points for humor and photos.

So, as far as 911s are concerned (not talking about rsr, rs, 911r, just 911s), I believe that the McQueen Le Mans car is the most famous 911s in the world because:

It featured in the opening scenes of Porsche's most famous movie Le Mans, was driven and owned by the king of cool, Steve McQueen, and looks absolutely beautiful:

Well, almost all the points. Gotta deduct at least one point for TTG fog lights instead of under bumper, another for euro turn signals (Steve was driving with US signals). Otherwise the resemblance is pretty close. Milou does your car also have sunroof, a/c and non sport seats? I never understood why Steve would not have ordered the car without sportseats. It wasn't a money thing - although it might be now! ;)

Agreed. Thomas you have nailed it with the LeMans 911. But your car certainly receives honorable mention and stands on it's own merits as Sifert's personal car which has some very unique history. Your's is one my personal favorites.:)

It does have a sunroof, an aluminum skirt and wheel arch trims but I also have sport seats! Apparently when new, sport seats were not as popular as they have become today. I couldn't help with the TTG lights, they just look too good.

Great Post for Frank, just before he sells it! Tooo Bad the rest of the folks that will bid on this really cool car (who really cares if a nut on the engine is yellow or black, or the fan belt isn't OG), will not see all of these "Interesting" Post on this McQueen Dream car! My vote is "This is absolutely thee "S" of "Sesss"!

If the Post asked, which is the most fa-mouse 911...........the sky is the limit!! My vote would be the "Tour De France" winning 911R. Or maybe that early 911 Proto that had the fins. Heck I always liked the Troutman 4 door 911 too and then there is the........................................

Whatever the CO gets for this car, 1/2 the do$h should go to the Rgruppe. If wasn't for Cris's mantra, this car and this discussion would be moot.:eek:

When the car was For Sale after Mr McQueens passing, the Trust couldn't sell it $12,000 here in Los Angeles and that wasn't really that long ago ( circa 1988 ). I would guess the Judge only ended up paying $10,000 for it.

I want to know how did Frank buy it (a few years back) first and not Seinfeld?? I thought JS was always first for that car if it sold.

Frank had the 'McQLeMan' car at Lime Rock last year for the Fall Vintage car show and there was pretty much no one around it all day(my 280SEL 4.5 was right across from it). He had one poster and a lawn chair(which he fell off of by practical joke by someone..Hmmm). Other than that it just looked like another 'driver' '70 911S. Like I said, If JS does not get this buy(from RM or private deal)for whatever $$$ amount, it would be the biggest (2nd) upset for him in the Porsche collector world.

Chads or Steve Junior's 911 is very cool no doubt and when it goes for sale..........if it ever does, we will really see what Steve can just-a fie as another Dead Dude gone rich ( remember Elvis).....err... ahhh at least his Aires. I didn't quite understand the "Zooming" word that Curtisaa used. Does that mean "If somebody makes alot of $$ (profit) on a car deal, he's a Zoomer?" Cause I guess most of us are Zoomer wanna-bees!

So far, the only "Zoomer" here is Jesse Rodriguez, and God bless him. The current owner of the film-prop '70 S knows Jerry and Sam's phone numbers, after all he flipped another prop from Le Mans their way. It seems that they weren't interested at the price required. I suspect that he knows Kevin's number too...

Gumby, that's going to be the problem for the current owner... He made Jesse "an offer he couldn't refuse" (well, not EXACTLY) and now the bar is raised so high that most mere mortals would have to give up wearing socks and underwear for the privilege of driving an otherwise ordinary Slate Gray '70 S. What makes this particular car interesting to me is the big file of documentation that comes with it. -- David

Interesting details on that owners maintenance booklet. Firstly, it was filled out by a female European. The handwriting is clearly feminine and the numbering of the 1 and 7 are written like a typical German. Secondly, the booklet shows delivery as June 1st 1970. The 1970 Lemans race started only 12 days later on June 13.1970 so Steve didn't have much time to drive the car prior to filming. Maybe that's why the car looked so nice in the first scene of the film. It was essnetially brand new...

With all my respect to the actor's work of Steve McQueen and his known passion for cars&cycles, regarding to Porsche: didn't Steve McQueen just wanted to copy Jo Siffert ?!

Like his friend, he wanted to wear the same driving suit, he wanted to wear the same HEUER swiss watch and he also copied Siffert by driving a Porsche 911S prior to the LeMans race: just like Jo Siffert did in real life !

Funny enough he did not dare to also copy the "BIO-STRATH" logo on Jo's driving suit's shoulder area because the broader movie audience would not know this traditional swiss brand ! (an organic energy drink made out of malt and orange juice).

Steve was after an period racer's image and Jo Siffert gave him the style he wanted because Siffert looked cool.

While we all marvel about a racer who drove a 911S prior to LeMans and we all cherish the opening scene of the movie, played by movie star Steve McQueen:
What we really see is an eternal movie hommage of a hollywood actor imitating Jo Siffert's taste and real life, killed later in service when doing what he liked most.

Karim, you have perfectly summed-up the irony of the McQueen/Le Mans "cult." I will never forget seeing the man who really wore that driving suit and those watches in the paddock when he visited Laguna Seca for the '71 Can-Am. I'm telling you, Jo Siffert was as cool as they come and he hammered his orange car around the old lake bed as if he only had a week left to live!

If it was a German female who filled out the booklet (assuming), she didn't know how to spell Hollywood.

I went to the "rabbit hole" and saw this car on the Internet Movie Cars Database. John Paul Sr asked me to build this car to wreck for a movie. We took the rusty Flintstone floor car and the gearbox that sang and the motor that smoked and made the car run. Of course it ran like a raped ape and turned out great. Try to make a bad one and it turns out good! John paul put the 935 body work on the car and it was actually attached to a thin cable that pulled all the bodywork off at the intended place of the accident. The car was acyually a 1971 911T. I love the scene where Dom DeLuise leans over into the engine bay with perfectly clean manicured hands with perfecly clean Snap on wrenches and the camera zooms in on the Zenith 40TIN carbs and Dom says " Let''s adjust that fuel injection"

Since we mustn't discuss headlight polishing, how about using a nice piece of cotton on a famous 911 windshield? Vic Elford pulling an all-nighter in his 911 Sporto, Marathon de la Route, Nordschleiffe, 1967 (it looks like he already did the lights):

Sometimes the lights had a "protective" rubber or very thin plastic cover on them, this kept things from "penetration" thus breaking the lights. Most of the racing 911 S's used this means of "protection" while in the "Heat" of the battle!

Cibie actually made them that "Protruded" the lens for better "Protection".

Its a really cool photo of Vic doing the front screen alone ! Of course the racing RSR's today have clear plastic sheets that are applied to the windshield. In a 24 hour race the team will install up to 4 clear sheets to really "protect" the glass. They tear them off as they need, during the race.

I don't know which trailer for the movie this one is , and it does not show the 911S. But of the trailers I've seen of this movie , it's my favorite.

The owners booklet says North Hollywood 91609 - Ventura Blvd. is correct address

The film-prop '70 S is now the cover-car for RM's Monterey Auction site. We all know about McQueen's penchant for personalization (like the Von Dutch glovebox door and Tony Nancy pleats in his XKSS), but I don't remember this "unique" passenger side windshield wiper parking place in the movie (coming out in Blu Ray in May -- pre-orders taken at Amazon). Does this give anyone confidence that the way this car is being represented is intended to entice an enthusiast bidder?
