Do any of you have knowledge of the existence of any cars with the following chassis (Vin) numbers.
i.e. the first production LWB 911
119000001 T
119120001 T Karmann
119200001 E
119220001 E Karmann
119210001 E targa
119300001 S
119310001 S targa

both 119300001 and 119300002 were originally prototype chassis, so others may be as well.
The other thing I might mention is the confusion over production VIN's starting at 0011 instead of 0001. The numbers I posted above seem to disprove that for 1969, BUT we don't know how that "rule" was applied and from what point.
Surely the build number under the knee bar is the definitive answer to the 'first' car off the production line for any year.

Not only early off the production line, but probably the earliest LWB winning car as M dl Route was right around the time of production start for the LWB chassis.
Raj, let me just say that as far as 119300001 and 119300002 as concerned I have good documentation. Also 119100008 I have good documentation and it has a fairly high production number (way over 100), so it is definitely a production car, but it does have some peculiarities.
Regarding what the first production car for any model year is, I agree that is a difficult topic. There are two production series at least, the coupe and Targa, and also the Karmann series when available. This car makes an interesting data point: 1020001 & 9112100011.
I owned 119310002 the second 69S targa. It's currently owned by Alan Brody here on the board. The car was very original when it passed through my hands, and had only LWB type items on it... no leftover 68 stuff.

So, if there was a car ending with an 01 vin, an 01 engine number and an 01 production number under the dash you could still argue it might not be the first off the production line?

I hear you Raj. So, my question would be, what is the point of all these numbers then? What do they actually tell us? Anything? Is vin 01 the first production chassis built or not? Is engine 01 the first production engine built or not? Is build number 01 the first build or not? I understand the cars were not built in vin order. I understand there may be prototypes. I understand cars may have been delayed on the production line. I understand there are cancelled orders. I understand there are customs delays, registration delays, delivery hold ups. So, what, if anything, is the significance of a sequential run of production numbers? Just to eventually tell us what model type, what engine type and what the total number of production cars we have? Or is the most significant detail the build date?

I picture the VIN, the engine numbers, production numbers, engine numbers, etc. all as individual accounting systems. All pieces came together under one VIN, wherever each individual component was in its build process. Was never meant to be orderly, other than basic accounting
Chassis 001 may have engine 008, production number 13, trans # 7, etc
I think Soteriks info of no 68 pieces on his 69 XX02 car is very interesting and should be taken note of(in regards to speculations of mixing parts between surtain yaers, i am not saying that was not done though).

Take for example 9112100011 again. It was March 1971 production with essentially a 1971 body; no oil filler on fender. So not really a production car but a prototype of sorts. The various components were built in serial order; body, engine, transmission. One should say the VIN's were assigned in proper sequence, but the cars may not have come off of the assembly line in exactly the same sequence.

John, as far as I know only the 901/01 and 901/20 engines started at xxx101, and the serial #'s previous to that were considered prototype engines.

My car is vin 11910008 which dave has been helping me with.... I posted a question earlier in technical stating that my dashboard has no speaker cover or holes on the dashboard...
does this mean its got a 68 dashboard? if it has then I think I need to check other items but I need a list from yourselves to check certain items?
I just wish there was a historian living near me who could inspect my car and document these changes....sadly the engine is different but im now getting small breakthroughs with
history of its life in SA, the car was the first imported into the UK through rob walker..... I now have an previous owners name to check but not have much luck at the minute :- Mark Wade - worscott fourways in South Africa....

A 68T with a South African connection could have some competition history or association. You would be well advised to read read read several threads on here. 'Out of Africa' thread for one.
Pictures will help to determine what you have. There's lots of expertise on this forum to help you.
I know of one other 69 car with a lower chassis number than yours which also has a 68 dash ( with speaker perforations)

Yes, it could still be a 68 dash and with no perforations means no radio probably which again means a low option car which means it could be more of a competition car especially with the SA connection. There were a lot of rallies and Motorsport around that time in SA.

thanks for the info... the interior mirror has a number on the back and will get my wife to send it to me, when I get home I will scratch inside of the bumpers to see if therse ivory inside,
this may give me a clue if they have been replaced..... im thinking loud here but my interior is #9922 (special interior) could the door cards, dash & mirror be a part of this and thats the reason for change?

I dont think I dare to ask the wife for more pictures, the PC is like an angry monster to her..... no the wheel arches have no sign of modification, they look original with not much corrosion, the only thing I noticed was a welded plated just above the drivers side rear wheel but thought this was a plate welded due to corrosion... not sure what else it could be..
are you positive they are flared? to be honest I never noticed it...

it is also possible that you could have a replacement dash in there. I think that for a period of time in the late 70's or so Porsche sold replacement dashes with no removable speaker grill and no speaker holes punched into the dash - it was just a plain unmolested dash. I have seen a couple in cars over the years. It is a bit difficult to tell from your photos however if it is one of those or a recovered dash that did not provide for the speaker but, to me, the front part of it looks too neat and tight to be a recovered one unless it was an excellent job.

The "under-structure"/ID of the car would reveil if the sum of these disparate interior parts are hiding a special car or just a standard one loaded with aftermarket changes and details which are not factory original.

the stitching is very different...the strips running diagonally are a square shape, the strips on my car are oval..... I need a closer shot of the turbo cards to be certain....seems funny I have 78 cards but original 69 door pockets still on the car?

A bit late but beter than never....
I own 119300002 the second LWB S that was made. The car does have quite an interesting history.
I was delivered to Porsche testing department and became a daily driver for Dr Ferry Porsche from Oct 68 to Oct 69. It was then sold to Baron Carl von Wendtin Oct 69 who was a good friend of Dr Ferry.
I have heard that von Wendt used to have a Porsche collection but know nothing about it. The car was sold and at some point impoted to South Africa where the first South African sold the car to a Gentleman from the Freestate here in South Africa who kept the car for 28 years. He also modified car to G body.
So, what is interesting here is the body number in the door. 320 011. These number were only used for prototypes. 320 001 to 320 009 was 1967 S cars. (not idea at all if these were the first test beds for LWB) Then 320 010 was 69S 119300001.No history of the car is known at this point. Then 320 020 was a 67 4 seater car.
Interesting car. Can you tell me where the numbers on the door are? Or even better, a picture?
Have you any more knowledge on these early lwb prototypes?

there must be some kind of trend why these type of plates were used on early cars, Davep mentioned to me not many cars have this type of plate attached to the left door frame,
both mine and Leons have the body numbers plus the paint code stamped, could this be for the first xxxx amount of cars or is it a plate used for a prototype car etc...... not saying
my car is prototype but is an early car with strange items which need to be investigated...maybe it is a prototype and will take further pics when i return to uk....

Lee, I think you may have misunderstood davep (or he you). The chassis nbr/paint code tags on the driver side A-pillar are common on the early cars. In fact, AFAIK, all chassis of your vintage left the factory with such a tag.Quote:

To Raj I am not talking Chassis numbers I am talking body nubers that was assigned to car at Karmann or where ever body was made. I have no clue what the number is that you posted I have been doing research about my car but never really extended the search to other numbers. I have how ever had confirmation from Porsche Factory in writing that only 2 69S came with 320 XXX body numbers mine and 11930001 (320-010)

In the 13xxx number range, the last number on the current factory computerized list is 13574.
It was used to rebody a 1969 MY 911 , I viewed the Kardex myself (I cannot remember the exact chassis number , as I had to look quickly. I just know it was 119 car).
By the way , I also looked to see when the computerized list was made , unfortunately I cannot remember if it was 1981 or 1983....but it was one of those two years. The file/list was dated.

Lee and Leon have posted photos of the two most unusual paint badges I know of. Remember, these are for 1969 cars. NO other 1969 cars have a VIN or other body number on them. The body number on Leon's car identifies it as a prototype chassis much like the first 911 prototypes of 1963. Leon's car also does NOT have a production number as such, just that number on the paint badge. Lee's car has what looks like a VIN or production number, but it matches neither the VIN nor the production number. So, Lee is correct, his badge and that of Leon's are nearly unique.Quote:

320017 built in June 68. Has swb lights etc. vin 119300004 and was used by factory until Sept 69. Was Pauli Toivonen's practice car for several rally events including the Acropolis in which he won overall. Car was designated GT-S by factory. Has really cool alu 100 liter center fill gas tank.

119300004 sold by factory in Sept 69 to Eduardo "Chachi" Dibos, mayor of Lima, Peru. Ran "Los Caminos del Incas" rally.
What I know of early LWB cars and SWB lights. As I noted 119300004 has SWB lights. I know that 119300007 does not. 119300003 had SWB lights and hand formed flares not the factory stamped versions of the production cars. Brian Long's book "Porsche 911 a Definitive History 1963-1971" shows, on pages 110-116, at least four different LWB cars with SWB lights.

The thread has proven so popular that I have exceeded my bandwidth for photo bucket for number of views. I am working to get the pictures back up hopefully this weekend. I have not added more to the thread yet until this issue is sorted as I have yet more photos to add and further developments on the story. I am on holiday next week so likely the story will continue the week after. We have been frustrated by the factory archive which would appear to have very little more information on the car's life as a prototype.

Yes, sorry I meant to say 119 indeed. The CVO say's it is a matching numbers 69 911 karman coupe and was built 3 september 1968 in US spec for the P.C. Pacific Burlingame California dealer. Car is in very good / original condition, except for that at some point in time the car was repainted to "porsche silver". Drove in the mille miglia entourage + vacation in Italy last year... and attended the goodwood festival of speed 50 year tribute this year.
Chassis number: 119120008
Engine type: 901/16 (us spec) with number 6195012
Transmission type: 901/12 (us spec) with number: 7190018 (5 speed alu transmission)
The colour number is reflected as 68-6809-H and is the same as i got on the Porsche birth cert. with also reveals that there where 3560 built that year (modelljahr 1969).

Why was it stated "probably the first LWB" produced? Production was end of June 1968. There was a prototype S (GTS) 0004 produced in June as well. They didn't go by serial number as 11930001 and 0002 were produced July 9, 1968 which was after 0004 I believe.Quote:

There is the E in the UK 119200001, the subject of this thread, which had versuch production number 320-012 and was apparently completed on 28 June (presumably the Ausgel.am date) but I have not seen either the kardex or build sheets and we know that the earlier kardex date (Ausgel.am) is actually not when it was completed but when it was "delivered" or invoiced from the factory which could be days after actual completion
There was the S that rower is talking about 119300004 which also had a versuch production number 320-017, and the kardex which has been posted here shows the Ausgel.am date as 28 June. Its engine number was 6390004.
There is also another S with Versuch production number 320-010 that had vin 119300001 and engine number 6390002 which was a WE car but I don't know any more about it and I don't know what date it is supposed to be completed on (although Rower says it and 00002 mentioned below was on July 9)
There is another S with Versuch production number 320-011 that is (i think still) in South Africa with Vin 119300002, original engine number was 6390003 and gearbox number 7190001, that was originally an experimental car but was also Dr Porsche's company car. The date I have against that car is 29 October 1968 as a delivered date (source Porsche communication to current owner) but i don't know what "date" that was and don't believe that that would be when it was made given the evidence of the others and that it was also on a Versuch shell. It may have been when it was handed over to Dr Porsche.
In addition I think that there may have been at least one LWB T, possibly more, in the 320-xxx series produced at about the same time as there are 4 320-xxx production numbers unaccounted for between the UK E and the 00004S / GTS.
The cars with versuch production numbers of 320-009 and below were all 1967S prototypes so not candidates to be the first LWB.
Without access to the build book I think that it is impossible to say which was first - only "may have been" or "among" as we know that cars were not built in strict production number order - and especially finished in strict order.

The E in question also has engine number ending 01 and the MFI pump is a pre-production type not used on the subsequent production series. It also has many swb features and a red interior which is a mixture of lwb and swb pieces which must have been a one-off crossover special detail. It was originally LHD and was a mule at the factory until the end of 1968 at least. I don’t own the car now but it certainly has a very strong case for being the first matching number lwb.

0004 also has a combination of SWB/lwb parts, produced in June 28. So that still leaves it undecided? Interior is race so can’t determine. Do you know it’s production book date?Quote:

The E had the Kardex with the typed Versuch number on it which was deleted by a single pen line (still very readable) and written above it was 119200001 also in the same pen ink as I remember. So, it would appear to have only had the single modified Kardex.
The Kardex versuch number matched the secret lower dash stamping.
