Restoring 1969 911S #31 - getting back to the matter at hand...

Those of you with very long memories will remember my '69S.

Before I got sidetracked on 64xx color codes and Solex carbs, 119300031 was my primary focus. Prior to acquiring the Togo Brown SWB, I had decided to take the car back to original after breaking a valve spring (and luckily, nothing else). My fatefully over-optimistic decision to paint the brown car in the interim, adding two babies thrown into the mix during, means I'm only now getting back to the Ess.

Back when I was looking for my first 911 back in 2004, I had several things in mind:

1. It had to be an 'S'
2. No red cars
3. No Flares

1 out of 3 ain't bad, huh? :)

So when I decided to buy this car, two things were going to eventually happen: take the car back to original silver and get rid of the flares. Needless to say, the first thing I did after tearing the broken motor apart was to remove the RS flares. Mind you, these pics are now 5 years (!!!) old:

Post teardown, one thing is apparent: the car is shockingly free of rust. I can count the rusty spots on one hand and every spot is smaller than your pinkie fingernail, which is exactly what you when restoring a car.

So here's the car today, finally adequately disassembled and heading off to the welder this Friday, April 26, 2013:

The car will be getting the narrow fenders installed, as well as seeing to the clean up a few minor details from a previous fender bender.

Progress should be more regular now - once the big body work is addressed, it will be off to be dipped, reevaluated, touched up and primered.

Sounds like a nice base from which to start!

I notice the S registry pdf lists your car as #31, not #30. Apparently a typo in that document.

Looking forward to your progress reports.

HOLY CRAP!!! First, the typo was mine (now fixed). My car is #31 and I had never seen that post before. How did I miss it after searching the VIN in the past? This may be the missing link to the history of my car!

The chrome 993 wheels are definite cross pollination between the 80s and 90s. So too the chrome black out.

The fiberglass faux RS look was a hit in the late 90s to early 2000s. The seats, belts, etc scream 'ready for Track days', which came on strong in late 90s as well.

But then Fuchs reappear, sobriety or at least the beginning of original character begin to creep back into the conscious of that owner.

Then you bought it.


The original owner of my car shared the conversation he had with his wife about what to do with it at the dawn of the 80s. They were very close to going down the slippery slope of 'forward dating' the car at that point, joining the masses who doomed many of these cars to such unfortunate fates. Thankfully, discretion was the better part of valor on mine!

You've got the 700 Mile S for inspiration regarding color and originality if that's your goal. Good luck with the project!

The person who painted this car was religious about the surface paint quality, but got lazy and painted over the schutz. Why would you do that?

Good reminder - since you asked...stock fenders have been trimmed and fitted to the rear quarters. Now is the ideal time to get in there and grind out all of the old undercoating and paint. Once that's done, it will finally be time to fit the fenders. Good news was no rust, as has been the case for pretty much everywhere on this car.

That top recent photo is very good illustration of the oil line path in and out of the rocker, something we seldom see.

And what about these open holes at the rear (red arrow)?

Above I considered farming out the work - now that is in full motion. Gas tank just got done, I sourced a better oil tank, seats are getting done...pretty much everything that needs to be done that I can't/don't want to do, is being done by someone else.

These shots are from about 9 months ago. The car is much further along since, having since been stripped of the dynamat, then dipped to remove any rust.

The car ended up revealing itself in condition typical of a former track car: a number of functional repairs done over the years using parts from the most recent year parts available. Net-net, a bit of a hodge-podge, but almost no rust.

Adding to the history, I found the second owner, whose college roommate was the son of the guy who bought it. The second owner was actually the one who had most of the previous bodywork done.

Most interesting, he said the car had 22K original miles when he sold it, and it only added a few thousand since. The odometer corroborates the low miles. Although unverifiable with documentation, the condition of the chassis supports the fact that this car hasn't seen many road miles. Then again, it is probably the most ragged low mile car I've ever seen. The track is a hard mistress.

Here we go...Latest progress. This month, the repairs begin. Lots and lots of detail work to make certain the sheet metal is 100% factory correct. Good news is my metal guy is a pros pro. My car isn't his first 911 rodeo. :)
