Where are all these 2.4 S now? Here are some stats.

As some of you may also do, I'm keeping a sort of private registry of some cars on which I have a personal interest / fondness. As far as this very registry is concerned, I realised that I'm keeping track of more than 500 1972 and 1973 2.4S (521 as of tonite, to be precise).

So, I was curious to know where these prized cars are gone nowadays and I believe that this number have a certain statistical relevance (it's about 1/6 of the total production).

Here are some graphs I have developed, I hope you will find them interesting and I'm looking forward your comments.

Thanks for these stats, pretty interesting. The distributions between 72 and 73 cars looks pretty different (especially the US exposure). Just a question, what is the split between 72 and 73 cars of the 521 you have in your database?
Another interesting thing would have been the same charts but taking in account the origin of each cars. But it is surely not easy to have these data for each 521 cars.

I'm trying to keep track of as many as VIN numbers I can, coupe' only (maybe this element was not really mentioned before).

Distribution: 1972: 277 ; 1973: 244. My guess is that the difference (lots more cars in the US for 1973 compared to 1972) is mainly due to the fact that the 2.7RS was not available in USA in 1973 so the 2.4S still represented the top model for this market. In this respect, I have no definitive information on the delivery for each market which could be an interesting complementary datum to describe how we ended up in the current situation. I have of course some info on the place of origin but not for all of them.
Another interesting analysis could be on colors, but that would need some extra work ...

I guess that we should share some data. I am interested in collecting data on ALL 911 & 912 through 1973.

In case you don't have it, 9113300021 was sold in US but now resides in UK. Originally silver, it turned black before my ownership. Shown registered at the same address in 1974 that was listed when sold in 2012. Assume the same owner but not validated!

The car hasn't been to Ireland yet. I imported from SF autumn 2012. I bought from dealer that acquired from beneficiary of owners estate. Hence address matching estate with early 1970s documents in glove box. My wife is Irish & so ultimately she owns all my worldly goods so you data isn't wrong, it's aware of the way the world works!

I wrote in the April 1993 issue of the Esses, Vol 3 #2, a short piece on import numbers to the US. 1972, 332 S models imported. 15% of all S production. 1973, 524 S models imported. 22% of all S production.

I have owned four 2.4 S cars all here in Wy. My current 2.4 is Italian spec from Varese, IT. Delcar was the dealer. #310 with engine #518 I have the complete history from day one.

Thanks Steve, I was not aware of that. Now, it seems that the current situation in the US is more or less mirroring the original deliveries (proportionally more 73 than 72). On the balance USA/ROW, I guess my data are heavily biased by the fact that it is easier to gather infos on US cars than elsewhere. I think that data for Belgium, Germany and Italy are underestimated in my graphs.

This is absolutely anecdotal and personal observation. Other than US spec cars the most ROW cars I have seen advertised or written about here in the US from one country, is Italy. This is just from being in the hobby for a long time. Oddly I have the sense of very few German S cars. Yet, if you look in the dealer booklet from the period Germany had the largest number of dealers with Italy second. Does not mean anything but it is what I have seen. Somehow a fair number of Italian cars made it to the States.

I am currently in the process of restoring it, the previous owner had it painted Polo Red, I am returning it to its original metallic Gold colour. I subscribed to your thread hoping it would take off. I have a similar project going for the MY 69 cars, with data on 500-600 cars so far, using an unscientific "when I get some time" web search and old periodicals perusal.

To me, the survival rate and period distribution of the cars is one of the more interesting aspects of the hobby. I started a thread on survival rate a few years ago.

Hi Nick, as a US car it has a driver / left side door stamp showing manufacture as 07/72. To register in UK I needed proof of manufacture date & so obtained paperwork from Porsche GB (not a COE but I think a Letter of Authenticity). It stated manufacture date as August 72. So I'm guessing it was built end of July & left the factory inventory in August. I hope useful info.

Many left Italy. Few left Germany, probably few left Switzerland (but I know a few). France/Monaco kept them for themself. Belgium/Lux trade/import quite a lot and as the Netherlands, its a small country. Spain/Scandinavia might never had many cars and kept them. UK are the only RHD so they traded within UK. Yes but we are concerned with 2.4 S here. Clearly 50% did not come to the US. See my post upthread on US 2.4 S import numbers. Those Italian cars I was speaking of were 2.4 S cars. Not the whole model line. Also it seems a few 2.7RS left Italy as well.

I have an ex Italian 2.4S. It went from italy, to Belgium then to the uk where it stayed for a number of years. I bought it in the uk in 2011 then shipped it with me to canada in 2013 when I emigrated.

In my opinion Steve is right. I think many 2.4 in general were sold in Italy. Just look to the car that are for sale in Germany, in France and the UK. Many of them are Italian and didn't necessarely get out of Italy during the last crisis.

Given the interest on Italian delivered cars, I wrote this morning to the Italian relevant authority to know more about aggregated data of original registration and current statistics, plus possibility of research of history by providing the chassis numbers and associated costs. Let you know as it develops.

My 72S Targa was also an original Italian delivery car, imported to the US in the mid 1980's

According to my records 199 was originally delivered in Austria.

I too am intrigued by survival fractions. Porsche is fond of saying that 90% (or some such crazy number) of all Porsches ever built are still on the road. Of course the sum total of all 356 and pre 1974 911 production is likely less than a couple of years of current production. I read somewhere recently that the 500,000th Cayenne rolled of the line recently. How long did it take for Porsche to produce its first half million cars ? Thirty years ? Longer ? So while I believe Porsche's numbers (it is effectively a post-war manufacturer), the 90% number is heavily dominated by production in the past couple of decades.

Which brings us back to the E and F types. The number is clearly not 90%. Is it really as high as 30% ?

BTW, Are you tracking all cars in the ERS or do you want our info ?

I bought it in 2005 in Napoli in a rust free but poor "driver" state, then owned it for 8+years, in the meantime brought it to "as new" condition, finally sold :( last August to Germany, near Stuttgart. Now I regret it but I have a "special" '72S targa Attachment 278425Attachment 278426Attachment 278427instead in my garage to enjoy after its restoration. That latter is a US delivered car.

399 911S
no break out as to Coupe, Targa.

As compared to 1971:
5328 total
4280 911T
716 911E
332 911S

So for the 911S, that's 6 - 8% of the total over those years.

Thanks. Data for 1972 I guess include 1971 MY and the first 1972 MY, i.e. 911 2.2 S "D" series and 911 2.4 S "E" series.

Wow, that's a lower number than I thought!

That would give roughly fifteen 1972 MY 911S Metallic Blue Coupes on U.S. roads today...

That was about 50% of 911 construction. I don't think Porsche broke 10k until 73 or 74.Anyone know when?

Here are my two 72's, signal yellow is the Euro car. Both get driven !!

A great project. Keep in mind that we won't be able to make any real conclusions. I've been through this with several marques - with much smaller numbers. My current favorite is the Scarabs. We know 3 cars were built. Four exist today. Each owner claiming to have an original. My Lola is one of about 25 and we only have about 10 registered.

The soft number is how many are missing. We can make a list of all the ones that currently exist but have no clue about what percentage that might be of the total. It's still good to do though. Te problem is that it takes decades to develop. Remember that Vern Lyle attempted to do this when he formed the Early 911 Registry. It would be interesting to go back and see how many of those cars still exist. I suspect not that many.

Porsche records are of very little help. If you've ever ordered a COA you already know that. What's really wild is that PONA will make "correction" to your COA if you request it. We could very well add a few S cars to the production total this way. Also think about the people that have requested new VIN plates for their 911 on this forum. As the prices continue to go up we're going to see a number of new S cars.

At the same time I applaud this effort. It's a lot of fun to do. At least for the first couple of years.

I have been caring for 1972 "S" Targa matching numbers #569 since I purchased her from a true enthusiast on the classifieds here at the Registry back in 2008. My oldest receipts from the early '70s are all from defunct Porsche/Audi/VW dealers in the San Francisco Bay Area so I assume the car was delivered in Northern California. I love how the '72 cars have the extra oil fill door and retain the extra chrome trim lost in '73. Here is a recent photo shot in film, all West German, with my Leica M6 & Summicron-M 50/2:

I think you should consider collecting info on the targas also. I would love to assist looking for data like many others here, but in the process looking for coupes, we will also find targas and that info should be collected at the same time. If this is too much work, maybe you could partner up with a S Targa owner interested in this kind of work?? Just a thought :)

Interesting you should say that,,,when I got the car it was black! However under the black was green,,,and under the green was signal yellow. The paint tag was 114, and back up under the dash was still the original signal yellow.

Do you btw have info on this car in your database?? 72S sold from Sweden to Germany a couple years ago. I know the gentleman who restored and sold the car and can try find the VIN in case you do not already have it.

I will try to post up some pictures.
The car was parked up in 1990 because of a rusty body and noisy engine (collapsed chain tensioner).
It sat there till 2008 when it was sold and the restoration started.

9113300023 was 2 owner car sold new in Ft. Collins/ Denver, Colorado area and lived there for 41 years until I brought it into California this year.
Originally metallic silver, the car was color changed around 1984 to metallic blue by the second owner.

Original owner Dino Tsamasfyros 72-83
Second owner David Lamb 83-14

I bought it from the shop that has preformed all the maintenance since 1983 and I did not get to meet the previous owner. I also have receipts from the first and second owners from 1978 up to present which is really nice. And thankfully the car has not rust at all.

It runs and drives great and although I would prefer to have it in the original color, I do like the metallic blue.

Does anyone on the registry know of either of the previous owners?

Hi Biancaneve, #1113 is standard Light Ivory, with beige leatherette interior. Engine number 6331778 (original). Delivery options were tinted windows, driving lights (white) through grille, sound system, and sports seats. Current mileage: just over 46,000 miles (verified correct by many documents in history file going way back to the 70's). Stayed in Texas in regular light use from 1973 to 2011. Imported to UK by a previous owner (an American living in London).

For the moment, yes, they are still on the car. They were put on the car in 1975 or 1976 by the guy who owned the car at that time (there is an email from him about it in the history file). I actually quite like them, but even so, I'm searching for a complete matching set of period 6 x 15in Fuchs from early 1973 to put on the car, or to keep in my garage for the future. I think it's important to have them so that I or a future owner can always make the car stock again if desired. Could be a long search.

Currently painted Gemini Blue Metallic. I am going to take it back to bare metal anyhow and do a complete nut and bolt restoration. A very nice original car with great bones and no rust. Original interior included.

When did you see her? How close to completion was she?
Brian told me that she's the best they have ever done. The level of detail as you say is phenomenal. Better than when it left the factory??
I have not been able to see her in the flesh, only by photo. Should be almost there now. The engine and gearbox went in yesterday!

Hi guys, this is the status so far ... the greyed out chassis numbers are those for which data are missing ... information welcome :)

When this thread started I did not own '72 S #1124, I have since become its caretaker. The third to date.
1124 was a special order car, triple black, 7" Fuchs all around, airport gears. Now a 2.8 on original case (Ed Mayo built) and factory supplied ST flairs. Wheels are now either 20 bolt Motorsport BBS or 8 & 9 Fuchs.
Photos early in its life at Green Valley Raceway, after updates at Henderson TX, recent during freshening up.

Spain I have 1 1972 and 1 1973 BUT consider that these are only the cars for which I have a number of cross checked information and cross reference with chassis ... I know that there are many more but I can't track them ...

Just received an update ... the 1972 2.4S ex Italy which was in Malta is now happily living in Australia, since three years already :)

You can enter the porsche Spanish forum par excellence. There was a post where almost all the 911 cars of the users were cited. I do not know if right now it will be updated but maybe it will help you. If I remember correctly, in that list. There were some 72 and some 73.Greetings and thanks for the info!

hi everybody, I haven't done so much in recent times, this exercise is very time consuming and i need to reconcile different data base.
. I am currently working on a "public" version of my registry which can be shared, i.e. "depurated" of all the personal / controversial details and reconciled with the various info I have collected in the meantime ... hope to be able to publish it after summer break.
