73 S - mating engine to transmission - question please

I need to understand the position of the transmission (915 type) shifter rod that exits the rear of the transmission so that it is in gear. I am ready to connect the engine to trans and want to be able to rotate the input shaft via the stub axles to seat it into the clutch disc...I admit to not understanding how that rod operates an therefore am struggling with finding the correct position (pulled out, pushed in, or left/right????) to engage a gear so I can finesse the two units together. Sorry for the mundane question...just not like the Muncie's or Top Loaders I've played with in the past :). Thank you all.

Doesn't really matter which gear, just push or pull and engage one. Any of them will rotate the input shaft.

Ed - I agree the particular gear does not matter..my difficulty was in the pushing and pulling which still would not 'find' a gear. I had another fellow outside of the forum say I need to rotate the shaft (easier done with the coupler installed) 15 degrees and then do the pushing or pulling...will try this evening. Thanks!

No need to put it in gear, you only need to turn the flywheel a couple of degrees to get the clutch to line up with the input shaft, us a prybar and lever against the stud opposite the starter motor.

And that way works also!! Your choice !
