Fires
Attachment 532547
It’s become surreal here in Oregon, California, Washington and Idaho. I’m in Central Oregon and a number of small former logging towns are simply gone. And I heard that over 1,000 homes have been destroyed in Talent and Phoenix, which are located between Medford (fully evacuated) and Ashland. That’s where’s Freddie’s shop is located, has anyone heard from him?
Quite a year. Be careful out there.

Oregon Update
Gov. Kate Brown said at a news briefing on Wednesday that some of the towns that have been “substantially destroyed” include Detroit, in central Oregon; Blue River and Vida, east of Eugene; and Phoenix and Talent, in the state’s southwest. Many residents have been rescued, some even pulled from rivers to safety, Ms. Brown said.
Chris Luz, the mayor of Phoenix, a town of about 7,000, estimated that the area may have lost some 1,000 homes and apartment units. He said that the downtown area was decimated, with many businesses lost, and that the fires continued to smolder on Wednesday.

incredibly sad! i used to drive thru those places...and dream of a simpler life outside california.
we had to pack to evacuate, and it can change you. we lost 1,000 homes here too.
i dont ever remember any year ever, like this. today at 2pm, it was as dark as moonless midnight, and still is.

bay area.... woke up figuring it was time to get out of the fart sack. thinking it was predawn but i felt plenty rested. turning on the light, i walked to the bathroom taking me by a clock.... 10:15 a.m. i looked out the window, there was no sun. just an orange dull nebulous glow. my thought ran from- wow this is historic to. those dam science fiction authors are always ahead of there time and right....

The smoke from the McKenzie River Valley (Holiday Farm Fire) here in Eugene is worse than anything I've seen in over 40 years here. The ash fall rivals the Mt St Helens blast in '80.
My sister was supposed to close and get keys to her brand new house yesterday—just outside Phoenix, OR. Closing didn't happen because everyone had to evacuate. They haven't let anyone back in the neighborhood yet, best guess is that the new house is gone.
A neighbor and friend next door lost a fishing cabin on the McKenzie River, but her concern is for the old lady who lived next door to the cabin. The old gal was bit of a hermit, my neighbor fears she probably wouldn't have left when they knocked on doors at 2:00 AM.
Some small bright spots—the historic Goodpasture Island covered bridge near Vida, OR was saved, as was the high school in Blue River. The schools up there are a big focal point of the community, and this may give people something to rally around.
It's bad, and unfortunately getting to be an annual thing. Someplace burns every summer any more. More and more places are suffering what happened to Paradise, CA every year.

I heard from Freddie and he says his shop survived (barely). Two of his employees lost their homes.

Sounds all too familiar, we had the same unfortunate episode in Australia. Thousands of hectares of land burnt by savage bushfires, several deaths, homes and shops/businesses incinerated; economy severely suffered as a result and then Corona came a month later. Melbourne, Victoria still in Stage4 lockdown! What else can Mother Nature dish out this year. All the best to everyone and stay safe.
