I have a lead on an abandoned '74 914 (1.8l) project... Can this be built into a competive vehicle in any historic class?

Emphatically, yes. :)

John,
Under Australian historic rules - I think the answer is no.
69-71's can run in group Sb. Don't see anything about 74 - maybe you could run one in group Sc?
There is a 70 914 running in group Sb that is always a long way back from me (and I'm a long way back from Alex!) I think your main problem will be getting decent power out of the 1.8 litre Ljet motor - although I think Solex's are allowed. The type 4 tuning stuff available usually seems to be based on big capacity.
Pity, because they're light, mid engined and I think you would be allowed to chop the screen off.
I don't think they're eligible for group N but you might want to double check that.
Thanks Russ, great photos and exactly what I'd love to do!
But my thoughts echo Ryan's... Here in Oz our "Historic" racing class is very strict and a '74 build date would have to compete with the likes of Z cars and some muscle cars. We're also not allowed 'replicas' so that rules out building a 914/ 6GT.
Ryan, it's a real pity about the 914 as with the windscreen chopped and running a S engine (or a stonking great VW type4), those buzzing Brit cars wouldn't have a chance ;) I have no real use (or space) to take on a 914 resto just for road use :(
John,
On the other hand, I think you could get somewhere if you started with a 914/6 instead.

I agree that a 914/6 would be a much better proposition. The 6 allows for more hp and better tuning as they effectively ran a T motor with Webers. Internals being free you could go to S specs and get 160hp+ and run it on 6 inch rims. There is not a lot of weight you can rip out of them however apart from maybe bumpers.
I think set up right, as seen by Howard's car, they can be a great thing to drive. The only thing that lets them down is the gear shift which is always vague.
I would have thought, By the time you set one up right you wished you had started with a 901.
probably right Hung!!
Yeah, I agree with all of the above... It's just an opportunity to grab a complete and running 914 at a reasonable price. You can't grab a 901 or 914/6 for the same kind of coin :(
